SUMMARY:Public Reading with Bao Phi: Amplify Asian American Voices
DESCRIPTION:Spoken Word Artist and Writer Bao Phi will be reading from his critically acclaimed children’s books\, A Different Pond (Capstone Press\, 2017) and My Footprints (Capstone Press\, 2019). Illustrated by Thi Bui\, A Different Pond earned six starred reviews\, a Caldecott Honor\, as well as the Ezra Jack Keats New Writer and New Illustrator Honors\, the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature\, Booklist Editor’s Choice\, a Hornbook Fanfare book. Kirkus\, Washington Post\, Huffington Post\, The Boston Globe\, School Library Journal\, Kirkus Reviews\, Publishers Weekly\, and many others named it among the best books of the year. My Footprints\, illustrated by Basia Tran\, The 2019 PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and the Little Free Library both selected My Footprint\, illustrated by Basia Tran\, for their 2019 book clubs. You’ll learn about a Harlem Renaissance writer\, Ann Petry\, who carefully preserved artifacts chronicling the black community of Saybrook. Examine daguerreotypes by Augustus Washington\, who abandoned a successful Hartford photography business to build a new nation in Africa. Browse through the photo album of a Hollywood actress who became a champion of labor rights for black entertainers. Marvel at the gorgeous costumes created by CT’s West Indian community for their annual MAS celebration\, and see artifacts documenting the Civil Rights movement in our state. \n$10 for CMCH members\, $15 for non-members.
