Please check back here soon for a new date announcement! \nThe Connecticut Museum is honored to host a special event featuring the screening of the film “Aftershocks of Disaster\,” and a discussion with the filmmaker and editor of the accompanying book. The film examines the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico offering a poignant look at the resilience and creativity of the island’s artists and activists who are forging new futures amidst the ruins left by the island’s compounding disasters. \nFollowing the screening\, attendees will have the unique opportunity to participate in a discussion\, Q&A session and book signing with the film’s creator\, Princeton Professor and NYT contributing writer\, Yarimar Bonilla. Our moderator for the evening will be House Majority Leader Jason Rojas. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at nbelanger@connecticutmuseum.org. \nThis is the last event in our 2024 Woodward Lecture Series\, in which we examine the impact and legacy of disasters\, both natural and man-made\, in our state’s history. \nAbout Our Speakers: \nDr. Yarimar Bonilla is a professor in the Effron Center for the Study of America at Princeton University and a contributing writer to the New York Times. Both an accomplished scholar and a prominent public intellectual\, Dr Bonilla teaches and writes broadly across disciplines and fields on questions of race\, citizenship\, empire\, and the entanglements of postcolonial sovereignty. She is the author and editor of several books\, including Non-Sovereign Futures: French Caribbean Politics in the Wake of Disenchantment\, Aftershocks of Disaster: Puerto Rico Before and After the Storm\, and Trouillot Remixed: The Michel Rolph Trouillot Reader. \nIn addition to her publications\, Dr Bonilla is also an Emmy-award winning filmmaker who has produced multiple documentaries\, television series\, and podcast episodes about Puerto Rican history and politics. She is a founder of the public humanities project Puerto Rico Syllabus\, former editor of Public Anthropologies for American Anthropologist\, and former Director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College. \nJason Rojas is the Connecticut General Assembly House Majority Leader and represents the 9th Assembly District\, covering parts of East Hartford and Manchester.
