SUMMARY:Made to Last: Mohegan Basket Traditions with Sharon Maynard and Cass Meehan
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to present a series of programs that will shine a light on some of our most treasured collection items. In the Rebellious exhibition\, we featured a woven wall pocket made by a Mohegan basket-maker from the Tantaquidgeon family. This basket and many others in our collection communicate the history and culture of the Mohegan people. \nIn this program\, Mohegan basket-makers Sharon Maynard and Cass Meehan will utilize historic baskets from the Museum collection to share the living craft and tradition of Mohegan basketry from the 17th century to today. You will have an opportunity to see several historic baskets from our collection up close! \nGET FREE TICKETS\n  \nAbout our Speakers:\nSharon Maynard is a Mohegan elder and a Tribal Nonner. Retired after serving 12 years on the Council of Elders\, she has worked in the tribe’s Cultural and Community Programs Department as a manager\, and as a field and lab technician with the tribe’s Archaeology Department. An avid basket weaver\, her interests include Algonquin Language restoration\, primitive technologies\, music\, and Indigenous foodways. \nCass Meehan is a Mohegan craftsman\, photographer\, sewist\, and more. They grew up deeply involved in their Mohegan culture\, frequenting the Craft Room alongside their mother who worked in the Cultural Department. Cass has previously worked in Philadelphia as a Props Master\, Costume Designer\, Production Photographer\, and Stage Manager before taking their current role as Arts & Crafts Program Coordinator within their Mohegan Tribal community.

SUMMARY:Speak Up: The Things We Give
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Museum for an unforgettable evening of live storytelling\, where talented storytellers share true\, personal stories drawn from real life. The night is led by Matthew Dicks\, a 62-time Moth StorySLAM Champion and 10-time GrandSLAM Champion\, and features a dynamic cast of voices bringing bold stories to the stage. \nThe things we give are not always wrapped in paper and tied with a bow. We give our time\, our trust\, our love\, our forgiveness\, and sometimes more of ourselves than we ever intended. On December 5\, Speak Up presents “The Things We Give” — an evening of true stories about unexpected generosity\, difficult sacrifices\, gifts with strings attached\, and the things we gave away only to discover how much they meant. Join us for funny\, moving\, and unforgettable stories about what we give\, what we receive\, and what it costs us to do either. \nHosted by Elysha Dicks. \nDoors open at 6:00 pm; come early to view our exhibitions\, including Drawn Here: Stories from Hartford’s North End. Performance starts at 7:00 pm. Snacks\, soft drinks\, and wine included! \nTickets must be purchased in advance online.  \nGET TICKETS\n$20 General Admission\n$15 Members\nFree for Connecticut Museum Member levels $150 and above \n  \nFor information on how to request specific accommodations\, including ASL interpretation\, please visit our Accessibility at the Museum page.
