SUMMARY:Calligraphy that Inspired a Nation: Learn to Write like America’s Founders
DESCRIPTION:Who was the calligrapher that wrote the Declaration of Independence? How did they write during the American Revolution? What tools did they use? What lettering style? Can I write like they did? We will explore these questions and more in this hands-on 90-minute program with calligrapher Debby Reelitz. Participants will get the opportunity to write in script\, use a dip nib and ink\, and scribe a line from the Declaration of Independence. \nDebby Reelitz is a professional calligrapher in North Granby\, Connecticut. Introduced to calligraphy by her 5th grade teacher\, she dabbled for years until opening her own calligraphy studio in Chicago before moving to northern Connecticut. For more than 25 years\, she has been a professional lettering artist\, creating awards\, gifts\, commissions\, engraving\, chalkboards\, writing on walls\, teaching and much more. \nThis workshop will be structured for the beginner\, but all levels of expertise are encouraged to register! DESCRIPTION:Understanding extremes of the changing climate to better protect our community\nPlease join us for a presentation that explores the challenges of climate change and what we can do to mitigate them.  This presentation is hosted by the Connecticut Valley Garden Club. \nThis presentation will feature Kathleen Biggins\, who created C-Change Conversations to help people across the political spectrum understand why they should care about climate change.  Using nonpartisan\, science-based presentations\, she educates audiences throughout the country about how climate change will impact them personally\, why there is urgency to address it\, how to forge consensus for action\, and how to find hope for our future. \nThis presentation is free and open to the public. The organization–comprised of volunteers who span the political spectrum–sponsors the C-Change Conversations Lecture Series\, which invites business and community leaders in the Princeton\, NJ area to learn about climate change from a wide range of nationally-recognized scientists and business and military leaders. Kathleen also developed the C-Change Primer with input from Climate Central and the Yale Program on  Climate Change Communication. Team members have presented the Primer to more than 19\,000 people in 32 states\, and it is widely hailed as an intelligent\, dispassionate introduction to and illumination of climate change. SUMMARY:The 29th Connecticut Regiment And the Fight For Freedom — Film Screening and Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the short film “The 29th Connecticut Regiment and the Fight For Freedom\,” followed by a presentation by one of the filmmakers. \nThis original documentary\, which won Best Connecticut Film at the 2023 Mystic Film Festival\, tells the story of the brave African-American men who enlisted in Connecticut’s 29th Colored Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and fought for the freedom of their people. The film tells their remarkable story of sacrifice and heroism on battlefields in South Carolina and Virginia. Near the end of the war\, the 29th Connecticut was sent to Brownsville\, Texas where they were part of the federal force that occupied that town and brought news of the emancipation of the enslaved – celebrated today as Juneteenth. \nAfter the film screening\, Christopher Barlow of the Berlin Equity Action Team will give a presentation about the making of the film. \nBefore and after the program\, we invite you to browse our exhibition\, Wide Awake: Campaigning for Lincoln. DESCRIPTION:Where do we find common ground? Cultural heritage art forms create and reflect meaning\, identity\, and community\, but we can become overly focused on cultural differences\, or else assume that there is a universal artistic language. But what if we can dig into—and challenge—both perspectives? In this new series\, we bring together traditional artists who practice art forms rooted in different cultural traditions to demonstrate their work\, share with one another\, and discuss their similarities and differences. Our first conversation will feature Tibetan thangka painter Yeshi Dorjee and Byzantine iconographer Marek Czarnecki\, as they discuss their sacred art traditions with one another and with audience members. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Encounters: Political Activism in 1860 -- and 2025
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be politically involved? What do political action and freedom of speech look like? In 1860\, during a time of deep political division and fears of a civil war\, five young men from Hartford\, Connecticut formed a campaign organization that became a nationwide movement and helped elect Abraham Lincoln. The attention-grabbing pageantry of the “Wide Awakes”—many of whom were too young to vote—provoked questions that remain relevant today. \nA new exhibit at the Connecticut Museum tells the story of the Wide Awakes\, featuring rare artifacts and documents from the Connecticut Museum collection. We invite you to join us on February 27 for a facilitated\, small-group dialogue followed by a question-and-answer style conversation with University of Connecticut faculty and community partners. The aim is to develop a forum for respectful and challenging dialogue. Groups will examine artifacts from the exhibition in detail\, using them as a window to contemplate the way Americans in the past thought about free speech\, democracy\, and political conflict. The program will spark conversation about how we can promote civic engagement in our own communities today. \nThe Encounters Series\, part of the Democracy and Dialogues Initiative (DDI) at UConn\, is working to increase democratic and civic capacity by supporting community dialogues on critical issues. DDI organizes audience-participation dialogues by which community members can dig deeply into complex topics through means of facilitated\, small-group conversations and engagement with content-area experts. \nThe program will begin at 6:00 pm. SUMMARY:Disasters in Connecticut: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Floods and earthquakes\, wars and famines\, engineering failures and economic collapses — these frightening events seem to define modern life. We call them “disasters.” But what makes a disaster different from other periods of time? In a freewheeling conversation\, two leading scholars in the field of disaster studies will consider events in Connecticut history and beyond\, thinking out loud together about why some kinds of bad news are considered disasters while others are not\, and what difference it makes. \nLight refreshments will be served\, and River Bend Bookshop will be on hand to sell copies of the speakers’ work. \nAndy Horowitz is the Connecticut State Historian and an Associate Professor of History at UConn. He is the author of Katrina: A History\, 1915–2015 (Harvard University Press\, 2020)\, which won the Bancroft Prize in American history. Jacob A. C. Remes is a clinical associate professor of history at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study\, where he directs the Initiative for Critical Disaster Studies. He is the author of Disaster Citizenship: Survivors\, Solidarity\, and Power in the Progressive Era (University of Illinois Press\, 2016). In this workshop\, led by artist Lara Miller\, you will be guided through the whole “block print” process: from designing a pattern\, transferring\, carving\, testing and printing your greeting cards to take home. DESCRIPTION:In the election before the Civil War\, young anti-slavery activists in Connecticut organized one of the largest\, strangest\, and most consequential mass movements in American history. Marching in militaristic\, torchlit rallies\, these Wide Awakes launched a diverse grassroots campaign to defend democracy from slavery. Their incredible rise helped elect Lincoln\, but also sparked the Civil War\, exploring the boundaries between political speech and political violence\, democracy and war. Join us to learn more about the Wide Awakes with Jon Grinspan\, Curator of Political History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and author of the new book\, Wide Awake: The Forgotten Force that Elected Lincoln and Spurred the Civil War. \nCome early to view our new exhibition about the Wide Awakes\, which draws on the Connecticut Museum’s trove of artifacts relating to the Hartford-area founders of the movement. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but we recommend that you register to reserve a spot. SUMMARY:Hartford Public Library Night
DESCRIPTION:Hartford Public Library (HPL) is partnering with the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History to offer an evening of FREE admission to the Museum for all Hartford residents. With an HPL library card or proof of Hartford address\, visitors are invited to browse the museum and take part in guided tours of the Connecticut’s Bookshelf exhibit. \nStaff from the Library will be on hand to help you learn more about HPL\, get a library card\, and get to know HPL’s Hartford History Center. Enjoy two opportunities for a guided tour of our Connecticut’s Bookshelf exhibition\, which explores Connecticut’s literary evolution from the 1700s to today. You can also attend a screening of the short film Thoughts Are Things\, an inspirational story about the power of books\, followed by a Q&A with the director\, Christopher T. Brown. Light refreshments will be provided. \nFree admission is available starting at 4:00 pm\, and guided tours of the exhibit will be offered at 5:15 pm and 7:00 pm (or you can browse the exhibition on your own anytime). Dive into the wonderful world of bookmaking with this introductory level class where you will learn the vocabulary\, history\, and know-how of binding books. By the end of the class\, you will have completed your own handmade book to take home! \nMaterials will be provided; however\, patrons are encouraged to bring any scrapbooking paper\, drawings\, or paintings they wish to use for their book’s cover. DESCRIPTION:Join us in learning the basics of linocut printmaking! In this workshop\, led by folk artist Philitha Stemplys-Cowdrey\, you will be guided through the whole “block print” process: from designing a pattern\, transferring\, carving\, testing and printing your design to take home. SUMMARY:Persian Calligraphy Workshop with Alibaba Awrang
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an introduction to Persian Calligraphy with master calligrapher Alibaba Awrang. Fusing Persian letters with bright\, bold colors and patterns\, Alibaba uses both traditional and modern artistic techniques. Awrang will present an overview of calligraphy\, give a demonstration and show examples of his work\, and then assist you in creating your own piece. No experience needed; all skill levels welcome. All materials will be provided. Alibaba will also share his story\, including his position as head the Department of Calligraphy and Miniature Painting at the Turquoise Mountain Institute in Afghanistan\, an NGO founded by the former Prince of Wales (now King Charles III). \nTICKETS (includes all materials)\n$30 General Admission\n$25 Members\nFree for Connecticut Museum NARM members and above \nGET TICKETS[divider line_type=”no-line” custom_height=””]\nAbout the Artist: Awrang comes from Ghazni Province in Afghanistan. He studied calligraphy in Tehran\, Iran.\, and opened his own gallery in Kabul\, where he also taught calligraphy. His work is well known in the Eastern world\, with exhibitions in Kabul\, Tehran\, Bahrain\, Dubai\, Istanbul\, Islam Abad\, Tajikistan and Melbourne\, among others. His recent commission of a large triptych was installed in the fall of 2022 in the entry gallery of the I. M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art in Doha\, Qatar. At the pinnacle of his career\, Awrang was evacuated from Afghanistan by the U.S. Department of State in 2021\, and is relaunching his career from his new home in Connecticut. \nSince his arrival\, Awrang’s work has been featured in three exhibitions in Connecticut: a sold-out show\, From Kabul to Connecticut\, in November\, 2022\, at the Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens in Litchfield County; in a September 2023-January 2024 show at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury\, Between the Worlds: Stories of Artists and Migrations\, co-curated by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Munson-Williams Proctor Arts Institute\, and the Mattatuck Museum; and in a recent show at the Five Points Annex in Torrington\, CT. \n“While my work is rooted in ancient tradition\, it is a new kind of Islamic art\,” explains Awrang\, “striving to open a new horizon by connecting the past\, present and future through the prism of postmodernism. I depart from tradition by combining both script and painting. In every maze of my calligraphic work\, there is mystery; and in every turn and twist of its colors\, I reflect the human condition.” \nQuestions?
