SUMMARY:SOLD OUT Islamic Illuminated Art Workshop with Khalida Marefat
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: This workshop is sold out. Thank you for your interest! \nDiscover Islamic Illuminated Art\, or Tazhib\, with Afghan artist Khalida Marefat. With Khalida and her brother\, Emran\, you will learn the traditional shapes and basic techniques used in designing shamsas\, the intricate sun medallions that are part of this art form. Khalida will give a demonstration\, show examples of her work\, and provide samples for each participant to paint their own piece. No experience needed; all skill levels welcome. All materials will be provided. \nAbout the Artist: Khalida Marefat is an Afghan artist who sought refuge in the United States with her younger brother\, Emran\, following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. Khalida is a graduate of the Turquoise Mountain Institute where she studied Islamic Tazhib art\, a form of calligraphic manuscript illumination. Afterward\, she joined the Muftah-e Honar (“The Key of Art”) calligraphy and gilding studio in Kabul producing gilded art pieces. Shortly after\, she opened her own company\, Asman Arts\, and showcased and sold her work throughout Afghanistan and internationally. She arrived in Connecticut in the spring of 2022 with hopes of resuming her business and continuing her tradition.
