SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Debra Cowan & Cate Clifford\, Songs That Touch the Past
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from Debra Cowan and Cate Clifford as they present Songs that Touch the Past! \nAs always\, we are open at 5pm to enjoy the museum and vendors. Music will run from 6pm-7:30pm. \nAbout the Artists \n“Stunning” is the word often used to describe Debra Cowan’s vocals. She performs unaccompanied or with guitar\, interpreting a wide range of traditional and contemporary songs. She is a full-time performer who bridges the old and new with a refreshing stage presence and has released six recordings\, all having earned praise on both sides of the Atlantic. She tours in the United Kingdom and in North America and can often be seen on stage with her good friend\, singer and musician John Roberts. Debra is a proud member of American Federation of Musicians Local 1000 and endorses Harvey Leach guitars. \nCate Clifford is a typically unaccompanied singer based in Rhode Island whose voice has raised rafters and cracked hearts in homes\, venues\, recording studios\, and festivals throughout the country. With powerful vocals\, sensitive harmonies\, and engaging context gleaned from intensive apprenticeship in the singing traditions that move her most\, Cate creates a vivid and accessible pathway to the songs she offers\, the people and stories behind them\, and the profound\, timeless delight of sharing both.  She maintains that no set is immune to a dash of Sondheim or a sprinkle of Shakespeare. \nWe are pleased to welcome Debra and Cate to the summer concert series as alumni of the 2020-2021 Southern New England Apprenticeship Program! In Songs that Touch the Past\, they’ll be sharing some great traditional story songs along with favorites from their repertoires. There will also be songs for audiences to join in\, so come ready to sing along! \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation\, the CT Cultural Fund\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \nLearn more about our summer concert series here.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: The Undaunted Professor Harp
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from The Undaunted Professor Harp! \nAbout the Artist \nHugh Holmes\, Jr.\, is a New England-born specialist in Texas-style blues\, alternating between harmonica and fervent vocals. He developed his playing style alongside many great blues artists. R&B icon Solomon Burke called him “Professor Harmonica Holmes” and blues legend Muddy Waters dubbed him “The Professional of the Harp.” Accepting both names\, he became Professor Harp. \nProfessor Harp exemplifies dynamism within the blues tradition. He can be found performing throughout New England with his backup of guitar\, bass\, and drums. His music and life reflect his dedication to his craft and his heritage\, and he defines “roots music” as not just limited to the past\, but fully engaged in the present\, and the songs are a vehicle for calling attention to injustice. \nTo learn more about Professor Harp\, visit: https://www.professorharp.com/ \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. SUMMARY:Negra\, negra\, negra soy
DESCRIPTION:Come witness as Black women share their words\, stories\, and creative talents to show the diversity of Blackness. Negra\, negra\, negra soy (“Black\, Black\, I am a Black woman”) is a community performance created by the afrofeminist arts collective\, Kukily\, that creates interdisciplinary work in performance\, installation\, audiovisual and community-based projects. The US premiere of this project (first conducted in Argentina) is being directed by Connecticut artist and co-founder of Kukily\, Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald. \nColleen shares\, “The creative process of ‘Negra\, negra\, negra soy’ creates space for participants to get to know each other\, for the audience to get to know them\, and for bridges to be constructed between individuals and communities. I also think this project is very important now because people of African descent have been disproportionately affected by the ongoing pandemic. Creating art together is healing\, especially art that uplifts the voices of Black women and folks of diverse gender expressions.” \nKukily emphasizes choosing performer-collaborators of different ages\, nationalities\, ethnic backgrounds\, skin tones\, languages\, hair textures\, professions\, religions\, generating essential conversations around who we are and how we create networks of solidarity within our communities. \nThe event will take place on August 20th at Kamora’s Cultural Corner at 75 Sterling St.\, Hartford\, CT. The event will include the Black Art Heals Bazaar with local vendors starting at 4pm\, and the performance will begin by 5pm. The CMCH is proud to be a fiscal sponsor for this event. SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Hartford Steel Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from Hartford Steel Symphony! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel. \nAbout the Band \nHartford Steel Symphony was founded in 1989 in Hartford and has become the area’s premier steel band. Kelvin Griffith\, the band’s director\, is well-known in Trinidad as a panist\, or steel drum player. Griffith is also a maker of steel drums\, and all the steel drums in the band are made by him. The steel pans reflect other instrument names based on the kind of sound they make—like cello\, bass\, guitar\, and tenor pan. \nHartford Steel plays a wide variety of musical genres specific to the West Indies\, including soca\, calypso\, and reggae\, and also can play pop\, classical\, gospel\, and jazz\, all arranged to reflect the rhythms of the islands. The band’s members have competed in years of steel band competitions—part of the culture of steel band performance in the Caribbean—and can always be found at the annual Taste of the Caribbean festival\, and at the West Indian Independence Celebration and Parade in Hartford\, as well as West Indian independence celebrations around New England. Hartford Steel Symphony has also played with The Hartford Symphony Orchestra and celebrities like Bernadette Peters and Len “Boogsie” Sharp\, one of the steel drums’ greatest panists. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee; the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Orquesta Afinke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for salsa from Bridgeport featuring Orquesta Afinke! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and Samba’s Cuisine food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel.\n\nAbout the Band\nBridgeport band Orquesta Afinke was founded as a way to entertain as well as educate about Latin American music and cultures. Afinque is Spanish slang\, meaning that the group playing together has tight rhythms—they have it together. The band was founded by trombonist Tito Planas and percussionist Samuel Diaz\, Jr.\, who both grew up in local Puerto Rican music traditions\, and are also committed music educators. All the band members are Puerto Rican musicians from Bridgeport\, and the group was founded in 2009 out of an opportunity to serve the local community. \n“If you listen to the music and rhythms\, it really talks about the island\, the history\,” says Diaz\, and this is what he and the other members of the band make clear. They perform to entertain as well as teach about the cultural roots of the music\, which includes salsa\, merengue\, plena\, bolero\, cumbia\, and Latin jazz\, as well as the cultural histories of the instruments they play. All the musicians are seasoned professionals\, and have played alongside famous salsa artists such as Frankie Negron\, Tony Vega\, Choco Orta\, Charlie Cruz\, Kevin Ceballo\, Raulin Rosendo\, and Los Hermanos Moreno. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee; the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Dexter's Lab
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special outdoor concert celebration for Juneteenth\, featuring music from Dexter’s Lab and an original presentation from Hartford artist Jedda Williams! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and the Curbside Vibes food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel.\n\nAbout the Artists\nDexter Pettaway\, the director of Dexter’s Lab\, has played drums since he was a young child raised in the musical environment of the Black Christian church. He went on to study jazz percussion and excelled there\, yet he remains deeply connected to the cultural roots of this music\, serving as music director for multiple churches in the Hartford area during the last fifteen years\, and he continues to support his local church in their music ministry. A versatile performer with many Hartford connections\, Dexter can also be found performing at Black Eyed Sally’s and Bushnell Park\, as well as teaching drums at home\, at his studio\, or at churches. \nPettaway argues that the church formed the basis for many forms of Black music\, including gospel\, R&B\, and jazz. His music and life reflect his dedication to his craft and his heritage\, and he defines “roots music” as not just limited to the past\, but fully engaged in the present\, and the songs are a vehicle for calling attention to injustice. \n  \n  \nTo learn more about Professor Harp\, visit: https://www.professorharp.com/ \nThe 2021 season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series is presented by the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP)\, the state’s folk and traditional arts initiative\, which seeks to document\, present\, and sustain cultural heritage arts and practices in the state and beyond. SUMMARY:Maanudam Parai Team Virtual Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Maanudam Parai Team for our third and final virtual concert on September 24 at 7:00PM! Chat with fellow concert-goers during the YouTube Concert Premiere at: https://youtu.be/cgQi66-RhWM. \nThe country of India is home to many rich regional cultures\, ethnicities\, and languages. Tamil language and culture have ancient roots in India’s state of Tamil Nadu as well as neighboring Sri Lanka. We are fortunate to have a vibrant Tamil community here in Connecticut. Spread across the state\, this cultural community keeps ties with teachers in Tamil Nadu and the United States. They work together to invigorate their cultural heritage art forms\, including Bharathaanaatiyam classical dance\, Villupaattu storytelling\, and Tamil folk dance like Kummi\, Kaavadi\, and Karagam. One of the most important art forms is playing parai\, a frame drum played with two sticks. \nThis third virtual concert features the Maanudam Parai Team (maanudam means “humanity”)\, along with performers from within Connecticut’s Tamil community. They also share the generous contributions of teachers and scholars who richly contextualize the history of parai drumming and the political position they take by embracing and promoting parai at this moment in time. \nThis concert series is made possible with generous funding from the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee. SUMMARY:Tang & DJ Stealth in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Hartford hip-hop artists Tang and DJ Stealth! Chat with fellow concert-goers during the YouTube Concert Premiere at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ7kJPjm_O8. \nJohn Manselle-Young\, known around Hartford as Tang Sauce or Tang\, has musical roots that go deep in African-American tradition. He is an active part of the Hartford arts community\, performing widely as a B-boy\, theatrical performer\, and musician. His hip-hop performances have earned him recognition from Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets\, a group founded in 1968 that has had unmistakable influence on the formation of hip-hop. Tang creates what he calls “old school Hip-Hop flow with a new school perspective\,” incorporating his jazz trumpet alongside complex lyrical rhymes. \nAsaad Jakson performs with many area hip-hop artists as DJ Stealth\, and also makes rap appearances as MC Lion. He is a local and regional fixture at musical events ranging from open mics to dance battles to parties\, and brings 15 years behind the turntables spinning everything he can get his hands on. \nThe CMCH virtual summer concert series presents the work of the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP)\, a statewide initiative that documents diverse cultural traditions and shares the artistic creations and community cultural practices of folk and traditional artists living throughout Connecticut. \nThis concert series is made possible with generous funding from the Evelyn W.
