SUMMARY:CCHAP Summer Concert Series: The Vox Hunters\, with Jerry Bryant
DESCRIPTION:The 4th and final concerts of our annual summer concert series will be New England maritime and sea chanteys with the Vox Hunters and Jerry Bryant. \nThis concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM – 7PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. He accompanies himself on various instruments\, including concertina\, guitar\, banjo\, ukulele\, and bones. Through his thorough knowledge of the history and language of sea shanties and period songs\, he is able to explain what type of work different songs were used for\, connecting historic songs to contemporary understanding. He also has composed new songs in historic styles\, is a regular fixture at New England music festivals and workshops\, as well as locations around the United States and Canada. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nThe Vox Hunters are specialists in the old music of Rhode Island\, combining historical interests with contemporary interpretation and innovation. Benedict Gagliardi and Armand Aromin are both multi-instrumentalists who cultivate local social music gatherings in addition to keeping traditional music vibrant. In 2019\, Jerry Bryant mentored Benedict and Armand in CCHAP’s Southern New England Apprenticeship Program for traditional arts. Jerry helped them deepen their knowledge of local maritime music. At this concert\, we want to bring this team together again to show off not only their newfound sea shanty knowledge and song specialties\, but to share how songs that have transitioned from worksong to entertainment still function as a valuable resource to community life. \n  \n  \nTo learn more about these artists\, see: \nhttps://thevoxhunters.com/\nhttps://jerrybryantsings.com/ \nThe 2021 season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series presents the work of the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP)\, a statewide initiative that documents diverse cultural traditions and shares the artistic creations and community cultural practices of folk artists living throughout Connecticut. The concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \n

SUMMARY:CCHAP Summer Concert Series: The Undaunted Professor Harp
DESCRIPTION:The third concert in our 6th annual summer concert series is blues music\, presented by Professor Harp. \nThis concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and the music from 6PM – 7PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. \nThese concerts will also be live streamed via CMCH social media. \n \nHugh Holmes\, Jr.\, is a New England-born specialist in Texas-style blues\, alternating between harmonica and fervent vocals. He developed his playing style alongside many great blues artists. R&B icon Solomon Burke called him “Professor Harmonica Holmes” and blues legend Muddy Waters dubbed him “The Professional of the Harp.” Accepting both names\, he became Professor Harp. \nProfessor Harp exemplifies dynamism within the blues tradition. He can be found performing throughout New England with his backup of guitar\, bass\, and drums. His music and life reflect his dedication to his craft and his heritage\, and he defines “roots music” as not just limited to the past\, but fully engaged in the present\, and the songs are a vehicle for calling attention to injustice. \n  \n  \nTo learn more about Professor Harp\, visit: https://www.professorharp.com/ \nThe 2021 season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series is presented by the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP)\, the state’s folk and traditional arts initiative\, which seeks to document\, present\, and sustain cultural heritage arts and practices in the state and beyond. SUMMARY:Maanudam Parai Team Virtual Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Maanudam Parai Team for our third and final virtual concert on September 24 at 7:00PM! Chat with fellow concert-goers during the YouTube Concert Premiere at: https://youtu.be/cgQi66-RhWM. \nThe country of India is home to many rich regional cultures\, ethnicities\, and languages. Tamil language and culture have ancient roots in India’s state of Tamil Nadu as well as neighboring Sri Lanka. We are fortunate to have a vibrant Tamil community here in Connecticut. Spread across the state\, this cultural community keeps ties with teachers in Tamil Nadu and the United States. They work together to invigorate their cultural heritage art forms\, including Bharathaanaatiyam classical dance\, Villupaattu storytelling\, and Tamil folk dance like Kummi\, Kaavadi\, and Karagam. One of the most important art forms is playing parai\, a frame drum played with two sticks. \nThis third virtual concert features the Maanudam Parai Team (maanudam means “humanity”)\, along with performers from within Connecticut’s Tamil community. They also share the generous contributions of teachers and scholars who richly contextualize the history of parai drumming and the political position they take by embracing and promoting parai at this moment in time. \nThis concert series is made possible with generous funding from the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee. Additional program support comes from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD\, and the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. \nTo learn more about Maanudam Parai\, see: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010615869906  \n

SUMMARY:Dan Foster & Eric McDonald in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first virtual summer concert\, with Dan Foster and Eric McDonald\, and special appearances from the Irish dancers of Scoil Rince Luimni. We can’t all be out on the lawn at CMCH\, but you can enjoy this performance anywhere\, showing at 5pm\, Thursday June 25 on the CHS Youtube Channel. \nDan Foster and Eric McDonald play traditional Irish music. With Dan on the fiddle and Eric playing guitar and singing vocals\, their repertoire includes music that goes back generations as well as contemporary combinations\, proving that Irish music is a very much a living tradition here in New England. \n \nBoth musicians have unique entry points into the Irish tradition. Growing up in Northern England\, Dan Foster developed his music in the lively session scene there\, then took Newcastle University’s Folk Degree course before honing his fiddle style in Limerick under master musicians. Foster\, a Connecticut resident\, has taught Irish fiddle techniques to an apprentice through the Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program\, an initiative based at the CMCH. \nEric McDonald has been a professional performer and instructor of traditional and acoustic music for a decade. He developed as a folk mandolinist in the Boston area\, honing his technical skill at Berklee College of Music\, and eventually found his way into traditional music through playing for contra dances. He developed a sincere appreciation for the music of the Celtic folk revival in England\, Ireland and Scotland\, and was quickly drawn into collaborative projects with fellow musicians. \nWe are also happy to welcome a special guest appearance by dancers from Scoil Rince Luimni (“Limerick School of Dance”)\, based in South Windsor\, Connecticut\, which is led by world-class Irish dancer Courtney Jay TCRG. \nThis concert is made possible through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD.

SUMMARY:Winin' 101: Finding Your Inner Jamette
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program welcomes Dr. Adanna Kai Jones to present a lecture/workshop that will address the bodily logic behind the rolling hip dance known as winin’. Rooted in the Trinidadian Carnival\, where the wine is most commonly performed\, participants will not only learn how and when to wine\, but they will be invited to connect to the deep histories of this dance culture\, paying particular attention to the late-19th Century jamette figure of Trinidad. Many scholars of the Trinidadian Carnival\, including Dr. Jones\, argue that the bodily logic of the wine is one of the inherited legacies of the jamette figure herself. So get ready to embody history in this multi-sensory lecture/workshop. (Note: no previous dance skills are needed\, just a willingness to participate and learn.) \n\nDr. Jones is Assistant Professor of Dance in the Department of Theater and Dance at Bowdoin College. As a dancer\, choreographer\, and researcher\, she critically examines the intersections of Caribbean dance\, Carnival\, and identity politics. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and is supported by Connecticut Humanities. The lecture is held in tandem with the exhibit\, Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community.
