SUMMARY:CCHAP Summer Concert Series: Jason "Panman" Roseman & The Tropical Gems
DESCRIPTION:The second concert in our 6th annual summer concert series is Trinidad steelpan presented by Jason Roseman & The Tropical Gems. \nThis concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM – 7PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. \nThese concerts will also be live streamed\, more information to come. \nJason Roseman grew up in Trinidad surrounded by steel pan instruments and music. His father was a master steel drum builder and steel band leader\, and taught Jason how to play as well as make the instruments from an early age. As a master instrument-maker and musician\, Jason is deeply invested in teaching steelpan in his community\, and is a teacher to individual musicians as well as local steelpan ensembles. \nAs a performer and composer on steelpan\, Jason embraces many different styles\, including Trinidadian calypso\, as well as Afro-Cuban\, pop\, and jazz\, with emphasis on music that lends itself to improvisation. He has released several albums\, including International Gems (2004)\, Steel Drum Planet (2007)\, Tell It All (2019)\, and Deep In It (2019). Together with his three-piece band\, Jason showcases the tradition and dynamism of steelpan performance. \n  \nThe 2021 season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series is presented by the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP)\, the state’s folk and traditional arts initiative\, which seeks to document\, present\, and sustain cultural heritage arts and practices in the state and beyond. The concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD.

SUMMARY:Maanudam Parai Team Virtual Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Maanudam Parai Team for our third and final virtual concert on September 24 at 7:00PM! Chat with fellow concert-goers during the YouTube Concert Premiere at: https://youtu.be/cgQi66-RhWM. \nThe country of India is home to many rich regional cultures\, ethnicities\, and languages. Tamil language and culture have ancient roots in India’s state of Tamil Nadu as well as neighboring Sri Lanka. We are fortunate to have a vibrant Tamil community here in Connecticut. Spread across the state\, this cultural community keeps ties with teachers in Tamil Nadu and the United States. They work together to invigorate their cultural heritage art forms\, including Bharathaanaatiyam classical dance\, Villupaattu storytelling\, and Tamil folk dance like Kummi\, Kaavadi\, and Karagam. One of the most important art forms is playing parai\, a frame drum played with two sticks. \nThis third virtual concert features the Maanudam Parai Team (maanudam means “humanity”)\, along with performers from within Connecticut’s Tamil community. They also share the generous contributions of teachers and scholars who richly contextualize the history of parai drumming and the political position they take by embracing and promoting parai at this moment in time. \nThis concert series is made possible with generous funding from the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee. Additional program support comes from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD\, and the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. \nTo learn more about Maanudam Parai\, see: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010615869906  \n

Chat with fellow concert-goers during the YouTube Concert Premiere at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ7kJPjm_O8. \nJohn Manselle-Young\, known around Hartford as Tang Sauce or Tang\, has musical roots that go deep in African-American tradition. He is an active part of the Hartford arts community\, performing widely as a B-boy\, theatrical performer\, and musician. His hip-hop performances have earned him recognition from Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets\, a group founded in 1968 that has had unmistakable influence on the formation of hip-hop. SUMMARY:Dan Foster & Eric McDonald in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first virtual summer concert\, with Dan Foster and Eric McDonald\, and special appearances from the Irish dancers of Scoil Rince Luimni. We can’t all be out on the lawn at CMCH\, but you can enjoy this performance anywhere\, showing at 5pm\, Thursday June 25 on the CHS Youtube Channel. \nDan Foster and Eric McDonald play traditional Irish music. With Dan on the fiddle and Eric playing guitar and singing vocals\, their repertoire includes music that goes back generations as well as contemporary combinations\, proving that Irish music is a very much a living tradition here in New England. \n \nBoth musicians have unique entry points into the Irish tradition. Growing up in Northern England\, Dan Foster developed his music in the lively session scene there\, then took Newcastle University’s Folk Degree course before honing his fiddle style in Limerick under master musicians. Foster\, a Connecticut resident\, has taught Irish fiddle techniques to an apprentice through the Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program\, an initiative based at the CMCH. \nEric McDonald has been a professional performer and instructor of traditional and acoustic music for a decade. He developed as a folk mandolinist in the Boston area\, honing his technical skill at Berklee College of Music\, and eventually found his way into traditional music through playing for contra dances. He developed a sincere appreciation for the music of the Celtic folk revival in England\, Ireland and Scotland\, and was quickly drawn into collaborative projects with fellow musicians. \nWe are also happy to welcome a special guest appearance by dancers from Scoil Rince Luimni (“Limerick School of Dance”)\, based in South Windsor\, Connecticut\, which is led by world-class Irish dancer Courtney Jay TCRG. \nThis concert is made possible through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD.

SUMMARY:Winin' 101: Finding Your Inner Jamette
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program welcomes Dr. Adanna Kai Jones to present a lecture/workshop that will address the bodily logic behind the rolling hip dance known as winin’. Rooted in the Trinidadian Carnival\, where the wine is most commonly performed\, participants will not only learn how and when to wine\, but they will be invited to connect to the deep histories of this dance culture\, paying particular attention to the late-19th Century jamette figure of Trinidad. Many scholars of the Trinidadian Carnival\, including Dr. Jones\, argue that the bodily logic of the wine is one of the inherited legacies of the jamette figure herself. So get ready to embody history in this multi-sensory lecture/workshop. (Note: no previous dance skills are needed\, just a willingness to participate and learn.) \n\nDr. Jones is Assistant Professor of Dance in the Department of Theater and Dance at Bowdoin College. As a dancer\, choreographer\, and researcher\, she critically examines the intersections of Caribbean dance\, Carnival\, and identity politics. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and is supported by Connecticut Humanities. The lecture is held in tandem with the exhibit\, Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community.

La serie de conciertos cuenta con el generoso respaldo de Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, National Endowment for the Arts\, y CT Office of the Arts/DECD.

SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos: Free Community Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Día de los Muertos at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History! This joyful Mexican celebration takes place among families to welcome their departed family members\, to celebrate life\, and to poke fun at death. \nThe Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program will partner with the Mariachi Academy of New England\, a statewide\, non-profit\, community music and education organization\, to present a traditional Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead celebration at the CMCH on Saturday October 27\, 2018. The event is free and open to the public\, and will run from 10 am to 5 pm. \nCome to visit with local families who will set up ofrendas\, or small altars\, in the same way they would do at home or with their community. Artist Carlos Hernández Chávez will create a traditional altar similar to the ones he grew up with in Mexico\, which will be open to everyone to donate a memento or message that will stay with the altar. All ages are welcome to learn how to decorate sugar cookie skulls\, make papel picado (cut paper designs)\, and do other art activities with Mexican artist/educator Adam Romo. \nThe Taco Tequila food truck will be on site with delicious food. At noon\, we will screen the Academy Award-winning film Coco\, an animated story about Día de los Muertos in Mexico. After the movie\, return to the ofrendas to learn about the arts and deep meanings of this tradition from Carlos Hernández Chávez\, who will lead an interactive discussion with families telling audiences about their altars and their experiences with the Day of the Dead. Visitors will be encouraged to ask questions\, visit each altar\, and talk to the families. The event will culminate with a special concert by students from the Mariachi Academy of New England and the popular touring group Mariachi México Antiguo\, who will regale spectators with familiar music played during Día de los Muertos celebrations in Mexico. Dancers from the group Alma de México will accompany them\, and audiences will be invited to join in. \nThe event is supported by the Greater Hartford Arts Council’s United Arts Campaign with major support from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving; the National Endowment for the Arts; and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \n[su_row][su_column size=”1/2″ center=”no” class=””]\nOfrenda visits\, 10am-12pm & 2-5pm\nSpecial presentation at 2pm \nArt activities\, 10am-12pm & 2-4pm\nSugar cookie skull decorating\nFace painting\nPapel picado\nColoring \nFood Truck\, 11:30am-5pm \n[/su_column] [su_column size=”1/2″ center=”no” class=””]\nSpecial presentation\, 2pm\nDía de los Muertos traditions with Carlos Hernández Chávez \nMovie Screening\, 12-2pm\nCoco \nMariachi Music & Dance\, 3-5pm\nMariachi Academy of New England\nAlma de México\nMariachi México Antiguo[/su_column][/su_row]\nTo learn more about the event\, please call 860-236-5621 or email kate_schramm@chs.org \n[slideshow_deploy id=’15112′]\nPhotos © Carlos Hernández Chávez.
