SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Debra Cowan & Cate Clifford\, Songs That Touch the Past
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from Debra Cowan and Cate Clifford as they present Songs that Touch the Past! \nAs always\, we are open at 5pm to enjoy the museum and vendors. Music will run from 6pm-7:30pm. \nAbout the Artists \n“Stunning” is the word often used to describe Debra Cowan’s vocals. She performs unaccompanied or with guitar\, interpreting a wide range of traditional and contemporary songs. She is a full-time performer who bridges the old and new with a refreshing stage presence and has released six recordings\, all having earned praise on both sides of the Atlantic. She tours in the United Kingdom and in North America and can often be seen on stage with her good friend\, singer and musician John Roberts. Debra is a proud member of American Federation of Musicians Local 1000 and endorses Harvey Leach guitars. \nCate Clifford is a typically unaccompanied singer based in Rhode Island whose voice has raised rafters and cracked hearts in homes\, venues\, recording studios\, and festivals throughout the country. With powerful vocals\, sensitive harmonies\, and engaging context gleaned from intensive apprenticeship in the singing traditions that move her most\, Cate creates a vivid and accessible pathway to the songs she offers\, the people and stories behind them\, and the profound\, timeless delight of sharing both.  She maintains that no set is immune to a dash of Sondheim or a sprinkle of Shakespeare. \nWe are pleased to welcome Debra and Cate to the summer concert series as alumni of the 2020-2021 Southern New England Apprenticeship Program! In Songs that Touch the Past\, they’ll be sharing some great traditional story songs along with favorites from their repertoires. There will also be songs for audiences to join in\, so come ready to sing along! \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation\, the CT Cultural Fund\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \nLearn more about our summer concert series here.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Sandeep Das presents Taal Mudra
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Sandeep Das presents Taal Mudra: A Confluence of Indian Music and Rhythm. \nBecause this performance is rooted in cultural and religious practices\, we will be marking off an area of our lawn for attendees to observe customs of respect to our performers. \nPicnic activities\, vendors\, and lawn games will continue as usual outside of this marked area. \nAs always\, we are open at 5pm to enjoy the museum and vendors! Music will begin at 6pm. \nAbout the Artist \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening of spontaneous improvisations\, dazzling rhythm\, and mesmerizing dance! \nCurated by Grammy-winning Tabla maestro Sandeep Das\, this special program will take the audience on an exciting journey through the world of North Indian Classical Music and Kathak dance. From ancient compositions to enchanting displays of virtuosic drumming and footwork\, it’s sure to be a night to remember! \nAbout Sandeep Das (Curator): \nA Grammy winning-musician\, Guggenheim Fellow\, and groundbreaking composer of new works\, Sandeep Das carries forward a 4\,000 year-old legacy of traditional Indian music that has been passed down from Guru (teacher) to Shishya (student) for generations. Das has been described as a “creator of myths with Houdini-like skills” (The Sydney Morning Herald\, Australia) and has collaborated with top musicians and ensembles from across the globe such as Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble\, with whom he has performed for the past 21 years\, as well as Paquito D’Rivera\, Bobby McFarin\, and iconic orchestras like the New York Philharmonic\, Boston Symphony\, and Chicago Symphony\, among others. \nPassionate about sharing his knowledge with the next generation\, he founded Das Music School in 2015\, which provides Indian Classical Music instruction to students worldwide. This concert showcases a few of Das’ local student apprentices\, offering a unique glimpse into the “Guru-Shishya Parampara\,” where some of the most impactful learning for up-and-coming artists happens live on stage during a performance. \nAbout the Performers: \n \nBailey O’Donnell is an apprentice of maestro Sandeep Dance and a Tabla player\, percussionist\, and composer. A classically-trained musician\, her experiences at the intersection of two diverse rhythmic traditions give her a unique perspective and ability to facilitate exchanges between Western Classical and Indian Classical Music. Bailey has had the honor of performing with her Guru at the Chan Centre in Vancouver\, Canada and the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, and has also performed with various ensembles at venues like the Chicago Symphony Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, and TivoliVredenburg in the Netherlands. We are pleased to have supported Bailey’s apprenticeship with Mr. Das during the 25th year of our Southern New England Apprenticeship Program. \nShonool Malik is a North Indian Kathak dancer. She is a student of maestro Sandeep Das and Sangita Chatterjee\, and her initial dance training was under Gretchen Hayden. Shonool has presented many dance masterclasses for children through various organizations\, and also has over a decade of experience in higher education administration. \nSriram Akella is a promising young Tabla player who has been learning from maestro Sandeep Das since he was just 6 years old. He currently attends Stoughton High School and recently performed with his Guru at the Newton Cultural Council’s annual Linda Platt Newton Festival of the Arts.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: The Undaunted Professor Harp
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from The Undaunted Professor Harp! \nAbout the Artist \nHugh Holmes\, Jr.\, is a New England-born specialist in Texas-style blues\, alternating between harmonica and fervent vocals. He developed his playing style alongside many great blues artists. R&B icon Solomon Burke called him “Professor Harmonica Holmes” and blues legend Muddy Waters dubbed him “The Professional of the Harp.” Accepting both names\, he became Professor Harp. \nProfessor Harp exemplifies dynamism within the blues tradition. He can be found performing throughout New England with his backup of guitar\, bass\, and drums. His music and life reflect his dedication to his craft and his heritage\, and he defines “roots music” as not just limited to the past\, but fully engaged in the present\, and the songs are a vehicle for calling attention to injustice. \nTo learn more about Professor Harp\, visit: https://www.professorharp.com/ \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: The Jedda La Rue Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Due to the local air quality alert\, this event will be held indoors at the museum!\nJoin us for a concert featuring music from The Jedda La Rue Quartet! Our vendors will be onsite from 5:00PM. Music will begin at 6:00PM! \nAbout the Band \nThe Jedda La Rue Quartet is presented by Anne Marie Williams\, better known as “Jedda\,” who crafts a masterful collaboration through intergenerational connections and multi-talented performing artists. \nOne of Jedda’s local mentors is living legend Emery Austin Smith—jazz pianist\, arranger\, and composer—who first encouraged her to vocally venture into those known and loved\, “classic standards.” Jedda magically connects across generations\, interweaving her mastery of early childhood education and educational program design with the arts\, and delights in sharing her own “pearls of wisdom through songs\, stories\, fitness\, theater\, music\, and movement” with young children and adults. \nAs K La Rue Educational Arts in Motion\, she has provided educational resources for schools\, teachers\, and parents in the Greater Hartford area for over 35 years. SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Hartford Steel Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from Hartford Steel Symphony! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel. \nAbout the Band \nHartford Steel Symphony was founded in 1989 in Hartford and has become the area’s premier steel band. Kelvin Griffith\, the band’s director\, is well-known in Trinidad as a panist\, or steel drum player. Griffith is also a maker of steel drums\, and all the steel drums in the band are made by him. The steel pans reflect other instrument names based on the kind of sound they make—like cello\, bass\, guitar\, and tenor pan. \nHartford Steel plays a wide variety of musical genres specific to the West Indies\, including soca\, calypso\, and reggae\, and also can play pop\, classical\, gospel\, and jazz\, all arranged to reflect the rhythms of the islands. The band’s members have competed in years of steel band competitions—part of the culture of steel band performance in the Caribbean—and can always be found at the annual Taste of the Caribbean festival\, and at the West Indian Independence Celebration and Parade in Hartford\, as well as West Indian independence celebrations around New England. Hartford Steel Symphony has also played with The Hartford Symphony Orchestra and celebrities like Bernadette Peters and Len “Boogsie” Sharp\, one of the steel drums’ greatest panists. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee; the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Orquesta Afinke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for salsa from Bridgeport featuring Orquesta Afinke! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and Samba’s Cuisine food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel.\n\nAbout the Band\nBridgeport band Orquesta Afinke was founded as a way to entertain as well as educate about Latin American music and cultures. Afinque is Spanish slang\, meaning that the group playing together has tight rhythms—they have it together. The band was founded by trombonist Tito Planas and percussionist Samuel Diaz\, Jr.\, who both grew up in local Puerto Rican music traditions\, and are also committed music educators. All the band members are Puerto Rican musicians from Bridgeport\, and the group was founded in 2009 out of an opportunity to serve the local community. \n“If you listen to the music and rhythms\, it really talks about the island\, the history\,” says Diaz\, and this is what he and the other members of the band make clear. They perform to entertain as well as teach about the cultural roots of the music\, which includes salsa\, merengue\, plena\, bolero\, cumbia\, and Latin jazz\, as well as the cultural histories of the instruments they play. All the musicians are seasoned professionals\, and have played alongside famous salsa artists such as Frankie Negron\, Tony Vega\, Choco Orta\, Charlie Cruz\, Kevin Ceballo\, Raulin Rosendo\, and Los Hermanos Moreno. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee; the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Dexter's Lab
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special outdoor concert celebration for Juneteenth\, featuring music from Dexter’s Lab and an original presentation from Hartford artist Jedda Williams! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and the Curbside Vibes food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel.\n\nAbout the Artists\nDexter Pettaway\, the director of Dexter’s Lab\, has played drums since he was a young child raised in the musical environment of the Black Christian church. He went on to study jazz percussion and excelled there\, yet he remains deeply connected to the cultural roots of this music\, serving as music director for multiple churches in the Hartford area during the last fifteen years\, and he continues to support his local church in their music ministry. A versatile performer with many Hartford connections\, Dexter can also be found performing at Black Eyed Sally’s and Bushnell Park\, as well as teaching drums at home\, at his studio\, or at churches. \nPettaway argues that the church formed the basis for many forms of Black music\, including gospel\, R&B\, and jazz. As a professional drummer\, Pettaway has recorded and played alongside jazz artists like Phil Perry\, David Davis\, Mary Taylor\, Lisa Glover\, Maysa\, and Asa Livingston\, as well as gospel artists like Vicky Mariconde\, Jonathan Dubose Jr.\, Nile Parker\, H. Doobie Powell\, Marlowe Smith\, and Jeffrey Holmes. As Dexter’s Lab\, Pettaway calls on his community of excellent musicians\, some of whom he has played with for over 20 years\, to play jazz\, soul\, gospel\, and R&B for appreciative audiences locally and beyond. \nDexter’s Lab will be joined by Anne Marie “Jedda” Williams\, who will be making a special presentation in honor of Juneteenth. Jedda is an Early Childhood Educator\, Master Teaching Artist\, an Educational Program Designer\, and Performing Artist who is a songstress\, dancer and actress\, and an architect of each form. She is the founder\, artisan and educational program designer of K La Rue Educational Art in Motion “Where Learning is an Adventure!” which was inspired in 1986 and established in 1987. Jedda serves as  an educational resource for schools\, teachers and parents in the Greater Hartford area and the surrounding towns for the past thirty-five years. She will be making a special presentation in honor of Juneteenth. \nInside the museum\, we’ll also have a special corner display of artifacts from the CMCH collection that help tell the story of African American history in Connecticut. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee; the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Maanudam Parai Team Virtual Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Maanudam Parai Team for our third and final virtual concert on September 24 at 7:00PM! Chat with fellow concert-goers during the YouTube Concert Premiere at: https://youtu.be/cgQi66-RhWM. \nThe country of India is home to many rich regional cultures\, ethnicities\, and languages. Tamil language and culture have ancient roots in India’s state of Tamil Nadu as well as neighboring Sri Lanka. We are fortunate to have a vibrant Tamil community here in Connecticut. Spread across the state\, this cultural community keeps ties with teachers in Tamil Nadu and the United States. They work together to invigorate their cultural heritage art forms\, including Bharathaanaatiyam classical dance\, Villupaattu storytelling\, and Tamil folk dance like Kummi\, Kaavadi\, and Karagam. One of the most important art forms is playing parai\, a frame drum played with two sticks. \nThis third virtual concert features the Maanudam Parai Team (maanudam means “humanity”)\, along with performers from within Connecticut’s Tamil community. They also share the generous contributions of teachers and scholars who richly contextualize the history of parai drumming and the political position they take by embracing and promoting parai at this moment in time. \nThis concert series is made possible with generous funding from the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee. Additional program support comes from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD\, and the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. \nTo learn more about Maanudam Parai\, see: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010615869906  \n

SUMMARY:Dan Foster & Eric McDonald in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first virtual summer concert\, with Dan Foster and Eric McDonald\, and special appearances from the Irish dancers of Scoil Rince Luimni. We can’t all be out on the lawn at CMCH\, but you can enjoy this performance anywhere\, showing at 5pm\, Thursday June 25 on the CHS Youtube Channel. \nDan Foster and Eric McDonald play traditional Irish music. With Dan on the fiddle and Eric playing guitar and singing vocals\, their repertoire includes music that goes back generations as well as contemporary combinations\, proving that Irish music is a very much a living tradition here in New England. \n \nBoth musicians have unique entry points into the Irish tradition. Growing up in Northern England\, Dan Foster developed his music in the lively session scene there\, then took Newcastle University’s Folk Degree course before honing his fiddle style in Limerick under master musicians. Foster\, a Connecticut resident\, has taught Irish fiddle techniques to an apprentice through the Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program\, an initiative based at the CMCH. \nEric McDonald has been a professional performer and instructor of traditional and acoustic music for a decade. He developed as a folk mandolinist in the Boston area\, honing his technical skill at Berklee College of Music\, and eventually found his way into traditional music through playing for contra dances. He developed a sincere appreciation for the music of the Celtic folk revival in England\, Ireland and Scotland\, and was quickly drawn into collaborative projects with fellow musicians. \nWe are also happy to welcome a special guest appearance by dancers from Scoil Rince Luimni (“Limerick School of Dance”)\, based in South Windsor\, Connecticut\, which is led by world-class Irish dancer Courtney Jay TCRG. \nThis concert is made possible through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD.

Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD. The National Endowment for the Arts (미연방정부 예술위원회); The Connecticut Office of the Arts (커넷티컷주 예술위원회)/DECD
