SUMMARY:CCHAP Summer Concert Series: The Undaunted Professor Harp
DESCRIPTION:The third concert in our 6th annual summer concert series is blues music\, presented by Professor Harp. \nThis concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and the music from 6PM – 7PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. \nThese concerts will also be live streamed via CMCH social media. \n \nHugh Holmes\, Jr.\, is a New England-born specialist in Texas-style blues\, alternating between harmonica and fervent vocals. He developed his playing style alongside many great blues artists. R&B icon Solomon Burke called him “Professor Harmonica Holmes” and blues legend Muddy Waters dubbed him “The Professional of the Harp.” Accepting both names\, he became Professor Harp. \nProfessor Harp exemplifies dynamism within the blues tradition. He can be found performing throughout New England with his backup of guitar\, bass\, and drums. His father was a master steel drum builder and steel band leader\, and taught Jason how to play as well as make the instruments from an early age. As a master instrument-maker and musician\, Jason is deeply invested in teaching steelpan in his community\, and is a teacher to individual musicians as well as local steelpan ensembles. \nAs a performer and composer on steelpan\, Jason embraces many different styles\, including Trinidadian calypso\, as well as Afro-Cuban\, pop\, and jazz\, with emphasis on music that lends itself to improvisation. He has released several albums\, including International Gems (2004)\, Steel Drum Planet (2007)\, Tell It All (2019)\, and Deep In It (2019). Tamil language and culture have ancient roots in India’s state of Tamil Nadu as well as neighboring Sri Lanka. We are fortunate to have a vibrant Tamil community here in Connecticut. Spread across the state\, this cultural community keeps ties with teachers in Tamil Nadu and the United States. They work together to invigorate their cultural heritage art forms\, including Bharathaanaatiyam classical dance\, Villupaattu storytelling\, and Tamil folk dance like Kummi\, Kaavadi\, and Karagam. One of the most important art forms is playing parai\, a frame drum played with two sticks. \nThis third virtual concert features the Maanudam Parai Team (maanudam means “humanity”)\, along with performers from within Connecticut’s Tamil community. They also share the generous contributions of teachers and scholars who richly contextualize the history of parai drumming and the political position they take by embracing and promoting parai at this moment in time. \nThis concert series is made possible with generous funding from the Evelyn W. This joyful Mexican celebration takes place among families to welcome their departed family members\, to celebrate life\, and to poke fun at death. \nThis year\, the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program joins the Mariachi Academy of New England and the University of Saint Joseph to present two days of Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead activities and celebration! On Friday evening November 1 at 6pm\, head to the University of Saint Joseph’s Bruyette Athenaeum–more information here. \nOn Saturday\, November 2\, 10am-5pm\, come to CMCH to experience the sounds and sights of the Day of the Dead. Bilingual English/Spanish tours will be held for visitors to get to know the ofrendas\, or small altars\, that have been set up by local families. Visitors are encouraged to bring their questions and meet their neighbors! We will also have a communal ofrenda where you can bring in or create a message or memento that will become part of the display. \nGet ready to learn about the depth of the tradition–activities for all ages will include decorating sugar cookie skulls\, learning how to compose satirical calaveras poetry\, and learning how to make papel picado (cut paper decorations). As a Puerto Rican cultural leader\, he is dedicated to the teaching and preservation of African-based music from Cuba and Puerto Rico. Roberto leads the group Bomba Ashé and also sings\, dances\, and plays a variety of drums including the panderos of plena and the barriles of bomba. Based in the US since 1965 and in Connecticut since 2016\, Roberto offers master classes and workshops on drumming and dancing\, presents educational programs in schools\, and has performed as a soloist with leading Puerto Rican artists such as Los Pleneros de la 21 and Eddie Palmieri. Bomba Ashé includes Roberto’s wife Gloria Lopez\, an accomplished bomba dancer herself\, and many of the most experienced bomba y plena musicians in the Northeast.  \nThe Puerto Rican traditional dance form known as bomba developed on the sugar cane plantations throughout the coastal areas of the island\, arising as the musical expressions of enslaved Africans brought to work there from the 17th century. Connections with other colonized Africans and Caribbean groups from Haiti\, Cuba\, and Santo Domingo created a rich variety of percussion-driven rhythms in bomba\, along with songs and dances that told stories\, related histories and social values\, and sometimes conveyed messages of rebellion. Traditional instruments include barrel drums\, maracas\, and rhythm sticks. Songs and dances are extemporaneous and creative in conversation with the drum rhythms in call and response patterns. Bomba has been constant in the musical landscape of Puerto Rico among traditional communities\, accompanying community gatherings and festivals as well as public performances. \nPlena functions as a “sung newspaper” for the people who moved increasingly into cities on the island after the end of slavery. There they connected with local rural residents called jibaros\, as well as with Taino descendants\, creating a mix of cultural influences that is reflected in the sounds and narrative lyrics of plena. Instruments are primarily the three sizes of the pandereta\, a hand-held drum\, and the guiro\, a serrated gourd that is scraped to produce a soft background rhythm. Both bomba and plena have found new life\, great popularity\, and skilled practitioners in mainland Puerto Rican communities. Plena musicians can be identified by their white panama hats.

So the vira refers to movements arising from the fishing activities of Minho\, while the chula and malhao from Tras-os-Montes suggest threshing\, husking and preparing grain in that farming province.  \nAccompanying the dancers\, the Rancho’s musicians play accordions\, violao (guitar)\, cavaquinho (the early form of ukelele)\, mandolin\, hand-held frame drum\, triangle (1)\, and reco reco (a long piece of serrated wood scraped with a stick). In the music of Ribatejo\, a split bamboo stick called caninha (“little cane”) keeps the beat instead of drums. Male and female vocalists sing festive songs\, often about wine\, romance\, and rural life.  \nConnecticut residents of Portuguese descent number close to 100\,000. There is a Portuguese Consulate in Waterbury\, signaling the importance of this ethnic group’s presence throughout the state. Large Portuguese communities settled in coastal towns to pursue fishing occupations; many of these immigrants came from the Azores. Factories in inland cities such as Waterbury and Hartford attracted immigrants from rural areas of Portugal who sought work wherever they could find it. The population of entire towns in the northern farming and seafaring provinces of Minho\, Tras-os-Montes\, and the Beiras came to settle here\, so the Rancho’s songs\, dances\, and costumes reflect these specific regional origins. More recently settlers have come from Ribatejo\, bringing different music and dance. In their home areas of northern and central Portugal\, many of these farmers and laborers were singers and dancers in the regular festivals\, church celebrations\, and special events which were always marked with music and dance. In America too the connections to village and traditional practices remain fresh and solid despite the community’s successful integration. \nThe Portuguese Club in Newington\, the Holy Ghost Society in East Hartford\, and Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford celebrate a regular series of religious and secular festivals including St Martin’s Day in November (commemorating the crop of chestnuts)\, Festa Divino de Spirito Santo in May\, the Rancho’s anniversary in October\, the Day of Portugal in June\, and the Festival of Folklore in March featuring Ranchos from the US and Canada. \n

SUMMARY:Outdoor Concert Series: An Evening of Irish Music and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Sharing the stage for the first time\, four Irish music masters based in New England will showcase fiddle music\, step dancing\, and old-style singing. Performing both individually and collaboratively\, artists include: Traditional dancer Kevin Doyle\, designated as a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts; Bridget Fitzgerald\, performer of the Irish traditional style of unaccompanied singing known as sean nos (Old style); fiddle player Dan Foster who will play tunes from his extensive repertoire and provide accompaniment for Kevin’s dancing; and Mary Lee Partington\, a singer/songwriter inspired by local traditions and stories who is an apprentice to Bridget\, learning sean nos songs. \nThese brilliant artists share a deep love for Irish heritage as expressed through music and dance. Committed to passing on their knowledge to up-and-coming practitioners who will carry the traditions forward\, all have participated in the CMCH-based Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. \nThe concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. Hartford’s participation is being coordinated by the Greater Hartford Arts Council.  \nMore about the artists: \n \nKevin Doyle was honored as a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow in 2014.  Kevin is a dancer devoted to and inspired by steps brought to the United States by his Irish-born mother in the 1930s. He performs old style traditional Irish step dance and American tap dance. A lifelong dancer and performer\, Kevin was a U.S. Champion Irish step dancer in his early competitive years\, and has been entertaining audiences ever since with his traditional style of “close to the ground” rhythms and intricate foot work as an artist\, a choreographer\, producer\, and teacher. \n \nDan Foster\, a fiddle player from York\, England\, moved to the US in 2015 and settled in CT with his wife\, Irish dancer Courtney Jay. Dan began playing violin at age 7\, falling in love with traditional fiddling at 18. He has studied with master fiddlers in Ireland and has developed a career playing fiddle for Irish dance competitions\, as well as teaching widely in New England. Dan’s traditional music group Daymark tours regularly and he also plays with Caravan of Thieves. \n \nBridget Fitzgerald\, raised in County Galway\, Ireland\, is a leading figure in the United States for old-style\, unaccompanied singing in the Irish language\, as well as songs in English. She was a founding member of Cherish the Ladies\, and is cited as a major influence on a generation of traditional singers. Bridget toured with the National Endowment for the Arts Women’s Singing Traditions of New England\, and her recent CD Two Sides of a Coyne is noted for capturing the remarkable dualities of her art. \n \nMary Lee Partington is an award winning singer and songwriter inspired by local traditions in song and story from the Blackstone River Valley\, the State of Rhode Island\, and the New England region\, often working from historic music\, literary texts\, and ephemera. She is one-half of the new folk music duo Partington & Sweeney\, PS. Additionally\, she collaborates as writer and singer for Roscommon Soles with Irish stepdancer Kevin Doyle.

SUMMARY:Outdoor Concert Series: An Evening of Irish Music and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Sharing the stage for the first time\, four Irish music masters based in New England will showcase fiddle music\, step dancing\, and old-style singing. Performing both individually and collaboratively\, artists include: Traditional dancer Kevin Doyle\, designated as a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts; Bridget Fitzgerald\, performer of the Irish traditional style of unaccompanied singing known as sean nos (Old style); fiddle player Dan Foster who will play tunes from his extensive repertoire and provide accompaniment for Kevin’s dancing; and Mary Lee Partington\, a singer/songwriter inspired by local traditions and stories who is an apprentice to Bridget\, learning sean nos songs. \nThese brilliant artists share a deep love for Irish heritage as expressed through music and dance. Committed to passing on their knowledge to up-and-coming practitioners who will carry the traditions forward\, all have participated in the CMCH-based Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. \nThe concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and the music begins at 6 PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food. \nThis concert opens the third season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series on summer third Thursdays with generous support from the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee; and the national Endowment for the Arts and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \nThe concert is part of Make Music Day\, a global celebration of live\, free music in over 800 places including ten Connecticut cities. Now living in central Connecticut\, members of Negrura Peruana continue to enchant audiences with their infectious rhythms\, and they involve the next generation of Peruvian drummers through teaching and performance. \nAll concerts are free.
