SUMMARY:The Dark Treason of Benedict Arnold
DESCRIPTION:Join us online with our guest\, University of Maryland historian Richard Bell\, as he reconstructs the life and times of Benedict Arnold\, the reasons for his treason\, and the larger problems of betrayal and desertion that dogged the Continental Army throughout the war. \nBenedict Arnold is the most famous turncoat in American history. He was a skilled officer in George Washington’s Continental Army\, a general who led patriot forces to several important victories over the British\, including the capture of Fort Ticonderoga. But while in command at West Point in 1780\, Arnold began secretly communicating with British intelligence agents\, giving them insider information\, not just about the fort and its defenses\, but about American strategy for the war. \nWhen patriot militia captured a British spy named John André\, they discovered Arnold’s treachery—Alexander Hamilton said it was “the blackest treason” he could imagine. A manhunt ensued\, but Arnold made it to the safety of a British ship (the aptly named Vulture). In the aftermath\, George Washington had John André\, the British spy tried. A board of Continental soldiers found him guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging. In the meantime\, Arnold returned to the field of battle. Now wearing a British uniform\, he led brutal attacks on patriot civilian communities in Virginia and Connecticut throughout 1781. \nThis program will take place online using Zoom. Click here to register. $8 per household. \nWhen you register\, you’ll receive a confirmation email. The Zoom link will be in the attached .pdf. We will also email you a reminder with the link the day of the program/ \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at natalie_belanger@chs.org. \nAbout Our Speaker \n \nDr. Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and has won more than a dozen teaching awards\, including the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship and the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar Award. Professor Bell is author of the new book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home\, which was shortlisted for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening Reception: Albert's Odd Jobs: Making a Living in the 1800s
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person opening reception for the exhibition\, Albert’s Odd Jobs: Making a Living in the 1800s. \nAlbert Walker was a 19th century farmer – and amateur magician – living in Glastonbury\, Connecticut. Through his myriad odd jobs\, Walker illustrates a pivotal moment in Connecticut history. Changes in technology\, economics\, and labor during the Industrial Revolution redefined work and leisure\, raising questions that we are still asking today. This exhibition explores those questions\, using Walker’s diaries\, objects\, and ephemera to better understand the personal experience of finding and keeping work in an evolving market\, pursuing passions and upholding obligations\, and maintaining a foothold in a shrinking industry. It invites visitors to think about their own experiences and to use the past to inform their present. \nPlease let us know you will be able to join us by September 1. Click here to RSVP. Remarks begin at 5:45pm. \nMagician Jim Sisti will entertain us with some magic during the reception! \n \n  \nImage: Clock repair toolbox belonging to Albert Walker. CMCH collection\, The Newman S. Hungerford Museum Fund\, 2007.4.2 \nWe thank our members and donors for making exhibitions like this possible!

SUMMARY:Member's Reception and Sneak Peek: Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow
DESCRIPTION:We invite CMCH members and special guests to join us for a opening reception and gallery talk for Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow. \nBlack Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow is a traveling exhibit from the New-York Historical Society. The exhibit explores the struggle for full citizenship and racial equality that unfolded in the 50 years after the Civil War. When slavery ended in 1865\, a period of Reconstruction began. By 1868\, all persons born in the United States were citizens and equal under the law. But efforts to create an interracial democracy were contested from the start. A harsh backlash ensued\, ushering in a half century of the “separate but equal” age of Jim Crow. \nThe exhibition highlights the central role played by African Americans in advocating for their rights. It also examines the depth and breadth of opposition to black advancement. Art\, artifacts\, photographs\, and media will help visitors explore these transformative decades in American history\, and understand their continuing relevance today. \nThis exhibition has been organized by the New-York Historical Society. Lead support for Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow provided by National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. Major support provided by the Ford Foundation\, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, Crystal McCrary and Raymond J. Each object in this exhibit has a story which fits into the larger story of Connecticut’s history. \nItems in the show will include a rare desk made by David Goodell (1753-1817) of Pomfret\, CT\, a landscape oil painting from 1873 by Isabella Vaill Waldo of Scotland\, CT\, straw hats worn by Katharine Hepburn\, and a thermometer made by the prestigious Hartford shop Kneeland & Adams. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by March 21. Call (860) 236-5621 x238 or email rsvp@chs.org. \nThe 46th Annual Connecticut Spring Show at the Hartford Armory will be held the weekend of March 23 & 24. SUMMARY:Short Attention Span Literary Club
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the launch of our new reading club! \nIf you have been wanting to join a book club\, but worried about the time commitment\, this group is for you.  We’ll meet every couple of months and discuss short stories and articles that have a connection to our exhibits. \nFor our inaugural meeting\, we will be discussing John Cheever’s classic The Swimmer\, a short story (with a twist!) about suburbia and social status in the 1960s\, over tea\, coffee and cookies. Afterward\, you can take a walk through our exhibition Pools\, Patios & the Invention of the American Backyard\, and see how the story connects to the larger context of 1950s and 60s outdoor culture. \nThe Swimmer can be found in many Cheever short story collections\, or you can access a free copy here. \nCost: free for CMCH members\, $8 for non-members \nThis is a drop-in program\, but we welcome RSVPs to help us better serve our visitors. SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception: Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community
DESCRIPTION:[slideshow_deploy id=’14857′]\n  \nWe invite you to join us for the Opening Reception for Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community. \nThe Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community exhibit showcases Trinidad-style carnival costumes (Mas) made by Hartford teens during the summer 2018 Mas Camp\, the eighth year of a collaboration of the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP) and the Connecticut International Cultural Carnival Association (CICCA) under the direction of Linford “Junior” Miller. The colorful and elaborate costumes on display are similar to those worn in West Indian celebrations around the world\, and will be presented by the teens at Hartford’s Taste of the Caribbean Festival and the West Indian Parade this summer. \nThe exhibit features costumes from teen participants\, who have spent six weeks learning how to design and make the costumes under the guidance of master costume maker Keimani “Q” Delpeche. Dance teacher Clerona Cain trained the students in “displaying” their costumes in the West Indian Independence Parade and Festival. Each teen designed and built a complete costume\, including headpiece\, arm and foot bands\, girdles\, collars\, backpacks\, and all frames and attachments needed for wearing the elaborate structures. \nThe Mas Camp program trains Hartford teens in artistic activities important to their cultural heritage. The program also encourages job readiness skills such as collaboration\, financial literacy\, creativity\, and attention to detail. \nThe exhibit opening will also mark the graduation of the 25 teens involved in Mas Camp\, and they will perform their dance routine at the event. \nThe Mas Camp program is supported by the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the City of Hartford; the National Endowment for the Arts; the CT Office of the Arts/DECD; the West Indian Foundation\, the West Indian Independence Celebration\, the UConn Caribbean Interdisciplinary Research and Outreach Institute\, and UConn’s El Instituto/the Institute for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by August 17. Call (860) 236-5621 or email rsvp@chs.org.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception: Facing War: Connecticut in World War I
DESCRIPTION:We invite CMCH members and special guests to join us for the Opening Reception for Facing War: Connecticut in World War I. \nOne hundred years ago\, the First World War consumed the lives of Connecticut residents. This exhibit will explore how people responded to the conflict and how it impacted life during and after the war. Hundreds of photographs\, letters\, posters\, clothing\, equipment\, and other artifacts from the CMCH collection help tell the stories of Connecticut individuals impacted by the war\, including military servicemen and servicewomen\, nurses\, conscientious objectors\, and YMCA and Red Cross workers. Similar to today\, in 1918 people in Connecticut struggled to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder\, concerns about immigration\, a global refugee crisis\, and discrimination. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by May 15. Call (860) 236-5621 x238 or email rsvp@chs.org. \nThrough December 1\, CMCH is collecting personal care items for military service members in partnership with Blue Star Mothers of America.
