SUMMARY:Short Attention Span Literary Club
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the launch of our new reading club! \nIf you have been wanting to join a book club\, but worried about the time commitment\, this group is for you.  We’ll meet every couple of months and discuss short stories and articles that have a connection to our exhibits. \nFor our inaugural meeting\, we will be discussing John Cheever’s classic The Swimmer\, a short story (with a twist!) about suburbia and social status in the 1960s\, over tea\, coffee and cookies. Afterward\, you can take a walk through our exhibition Pools\, Patios & the Invention of the American Backyard\, and see how the story connects to the larger context of 1950s and 60s outdoor culture. \nThe Swimmer can be found in many Cheever short story collections\, or you can access a free copy here. \nCost: free for CMCH members\, $8 for non-members \nThis is a drop-in program\, but we welcome RSVPs to help us better serve our visitors. Please email rsvp@chs.org or call 860-236-5621 ext. 238. Questions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at natalie_belanger@chs.org.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception: Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community
DESCRIPTION:[slideshow_deploy id=’14857′]\n  \nWe invite you to join us for the Opening Reception for Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community. \nThe Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community exhibit showcases Trinidad-style carnival costumes (Mas) made by Hartford teens during the summer 2018 Mas Camp\, the eighth year of a collaboration of the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP) and the Connecticut International Cultural Carnival Association (CICCA) under the direction of Linford “Junior” Miller. The colorful and elaborate costumes on display are similar to those worn in West Indian celebrations around the world\, and will be presented by the teens at Hartford’s Taste of the Caribbean Festival and the West Indian Parade this summer. \nThe exhibit features costumes from teen participants\, who have spent six weeks learning how to design and make the costumes under the guidance of master costume maker Keimani “Q” Delpeche. Dance teacher Clerona Cain trained the students in “displaying” their costumes in the West Indian Independence Parade and Festival. Each teen designed and built a complete costume\, including headpiece\, arm and foot bands\, girdles\, collars\, backpacks\, and all frames and attachments needed for wearing the elaborate structures. \nThe Mas Camp program trains Hartford teens in artistic activities important to their cultural heritage. The program also encourages job readiness skills such as collaboration\, financial literacy\, creativity\, and attention to detail. \nThe exhibit opening will also mark the graduation of the 25 teens involved in Mas Camp\, and they will perform their dance routine at the event. \nThe Mas Camp program is supported by the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the City of Hartford; the National Endowment for the Arts; the CT Office of the Arts/DECD; the West Indian Foundation\, the West Indian Independence Celebration\, the UConn Caribbean Interdisciplinary Research and Outreach Institute\, and UConn’s El Instituto/the Institute for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by August 17. Call (860) 236-5621 or email rsvp@chs.org.

DESCRIPTION:We invite CMCH members and special guests to join us for the Opening Reception for Facing War: Connecticut in World War I. \nOne hundred years ago\, the First World War consumed the lives of Connecticut residents. Similar to today\, in 1918 people in Connecticut struggled to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder\, concerns about immigration\, a global refugee crisis\, and discrimination. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by May 15. Call (860) 236-5621 x238 or email rsvp@chs.org. \nThrough December 1\, CMCH is collecting personal care items for military service members in partnership with Blue Star Mothers of America. SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception: That's Weird
DESCRIPTION:We invite CMCH members and special guests to join us for the Opening Reception for That’s Weird. \n“That’s weird” is a phrase staff hears all the time in galleries and on tours. Visitors often encounter collection items that are quirky\, surprising\, or rare. But\, take a second look and weird objects can have surprising and unique histories. The CMCH is excited to show off some of our funny little oddballs of history. Displaying many of these objects for the first time\, the CMCH delves into how these objects\, which at first glance seem strange\, can be gateways into a deeper understanding and appreciation of our state’s history. Visitors will be encouraged to go beyond making snap judgments about objects to having deeper understanding\, perhaps even empathy\, for the people and stories connected to our state’s material culture. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by November 3. Call (860) 236-5621 x238 or email rsvp@chs.org. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception: Sisu and Creativity: Finnish Cultural Heritage in Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:We invite CMCH members and special guests to join us for the Opening Reception for Sisu and Creativity: Finnish Cultural Heritage in Connecticut. \nThe Connecticut Museum of Culture and History is partnering with the Finnish American Heritage Society (FAHS) based in Canterbury CT to present art works\, images\, and documentation of the community’s history from the FAHS archives\, one of the largest Finnish collections in the country. Opening on March 21 and on view until May 6\, the exhibit will explore central characteristics of Finns in Connecticut – their agricultural cooperatives; the built environment including farms\, barns\, and community halls; the saunas constructed by every family as a social gathering place; the festivals celebrating important Finnish holidays; and the many artistic and musical traditions still practiced throughout the community. 2017 marks the centenary of Finland’s independence from Russia\, as well as the 30th anniversary of the founding of FAHS. The CT Cultural Heritage Arts Program at CMCH has collaborated with FAHS on several traditional arts apprenticeships teaching weaving\, sauna building\, woodcarving\, and birch bark weaving which will be highlighted in the exhibit. CMCH and FAHS will present a bus tour and culinary experience in eastern Connecticut on April 22. \nThe exhibit opening reception will take place at the CMCH on Friday March 24 from 5:30 – 7:00 pm and will feature speakers from the Finnish community\, along with Finnish folk music. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by March 17. Call (860) 236-5621 x238 or email rsvp@chs.org.
