SUMMARY:Día de Muertos: Free Community Events!
DESCRIPTION:Día de Muertos is coming back to the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History! This joyful Mexican celebration takes place among families to welcome their departed family members\, to celebrate life\, and to poke fun at death. \nThis year\, the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program joins the Mariachi Academy of New England and the University of Saint Joseph to present two days of Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead activities and celebration! On Friday evening November 1 at 6pm\, head to the University of Saint Joseph’s Bruyette Athenaeum–more information here. \nOn Saturday\, November 2\, 10am-5pm\, come to CMCH to experience the sounds and sights of the Day of the Dead. Bilingual English/Spanish tours will be held for visitors to get to know the ofrendas\, or small altars\, that have been set up by local families. Visitors are encouraged to bring their questions and meet their neighbors! We will also have a communal ofrenda where you can bring in or create a message or memento that will become part of the display. \nGet ready to learn about the depth of the tradition–activities for all ages will include decorating sugar cookie skulls\, learning how to compose satirical calaveras poetry\, and learning how to make papel picado (cut paper decorations). Performances will happen throughout the day by the many talented ensembles from the Mariachi Academy\, and a food truck will be on site so you can keep enjoying the event all day long! \nBoth events are FREE and open to the public! \nThese events are supported by the Greater Hartford Arts Council’s United Arts Campaign with major support from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving; the University of Saint Joseph; Ellen Brown; Berkshire Bank; the National Endowment for the Arts; and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \n\nEstos eventos son apoyados por Greater Hartford Arts Council’s United Arts Campaign con el gran apoyo de Hartford Foundation for Public Giving; University of Saint Joseph; Ellen Brown; Berkshire Bank; National Endowment for the Arts; y CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \n\n

SUMMARY:Winin' 101: Finding Your Inner Jamette
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program welcomes Dr. Adanna Kai Jones to present a lecture/workshop that will address the bodily logic behind the rolling hip dance known as winin’. Rooted in the Trinidadian Carnival\, where the wine is most commonly performed\, participants will not only learn how and when to wine\, but they will be invited to connect to the deep histories of this dance culture\, paying particular attention to the late-19th Century jamette figure of Trinidad. Many scholars of the Trinidadian Carnival\, including Dr. Jones\, argue that the bodily logic of the wine is one of the inherited legacies of the jamette figure herself. So get ready to embody history in this multi-sensory lecture/workshop. (Note: no previous dance skills are needed\, just a willingness to participate and learn.) \n\nDr. Jones is Assistant Professor of Dance in the Department of Theater and Dance at Bowdoin College. As a dancer\, choreographer\, and researcher\, she critically examines the intersections of Caribbean dance\, Carnival\, and identity politics. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and is supported by Connecticut Humanities. The lecture is held in tandem with the exhibit\, Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community.
