SUMMARY:Common Ground: Dance Traditions in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Where do we find common ground? Cultural heritage art forms create and reflect meaning\, identity\, and community\, but we can become focused on cultural differences or assume that there is a universal artistic language. But what if we can dig into—and challenge—both perspectives? \nIn this series\, we bring together traditional artists who practice art forms rooted in different cultural traditions to demonstrate their work\, share with one another\, and discuss their similarities and differences. This conversation will feature Kathak dancer Rachna Agrawal and Flamenco dancer Yohanna Escamilla\, as they discuss and demonstrate their dance traditions with one another and with audience members. Come with your questions to share! \n \nLearn more about Rachna Agrawal here: https://kathakusa.com/ \nLearn more about Yohanna Escamilla here: https://www.yohannaescamilla.com/ \nGet free tickets to reserve your spot! \nget free tickets\nThis program is generously supported by the Auerbach Schiro Foundation.

Cultural heritage art forms create and reflect meaning\, identity\, and community\, but we can become overly focused on cultural differences\, or else assume that there is a universal artistic language. But what if we can dig into—and challenge—both perspectives? In Common Ground\, we bring together traditional artists and cultural practitioners who are rooted in different cultural traditions to demonstrate their work\, share with one another\, and discuss their similarities and differences. \nIn this conversation\, we will hold a discussion with the featured artists from the Growers of Color video series! Growers of Color addresses the experiences of people at the intersections of agriculture\, culture\, and community. Through the lens of folklife\, we can see how growing food is rooted in local history and contemporary contexts\, and how these growers evolve and adapt to meet their communities’ needs and build community with one another. \nThis conversation will feature: \n\n Azeem Kareem and Sarah Rose Kareem of Samad Gardens Initiative\nKhmer farmer Vicheth Im\nRobert Peck of Hemp Milk and Honey\nTravis Stewart of Farm with Me LLC\n\nThe panel will be moderated by Mike Keo\, a Senior Communication Officer at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. Previously\, he worked at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History\, served as Storyteller for UConn’s Boys and Men of Color Summit\, and was Activist-in-Residence at UConn AAASI. SUMMARY:Dark Skies - An Overlooked Ecological Problem
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Connecticut Museum for a program hosted by the Connecticut Valley Garden Club! \nA vital and often overlooked ecological problem has grown worse and worse. Yet\, the solutions are simple! Learn about the issue of excess light in the night skies\, how urban sprawl and proliferation of ever brighter lighting has disrupted bird migration\, decimated insect populations\, confused fireflies\, and affected human health. A panel of experts in their field will explore these issues and help us to learn about manageable solutions\, in a discussion let by naturalist Diane Tucker. The panelists include Dr. Susan Masino\, Craig Repasz\, Leo Smith\, and Avalon Owens. \nThis presentation is free and open to the public. Check-in begins at 5 pm\, event begins at 6 pm. Light refreshments will be served. \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Public Programs Manager\, at nbelanger@connecticutmuseum.org. \nget free tickets
