SUMMARY:Tavern Talks
DESCRIPTION:The dozens of tavern signs in our Auditorium once hung over busy public spaces where Connecticans ate\, drank\, slept\, argued\, celebrated\, gambled\, danced\, and courted. On select Sundays at 2:00 pm\, drop in for a gallery talk about tavern life in early Connecticut. You’ll learn how to decode the symbolism on some of our most inscrutable signs\, and about why so few of these once-ubiquitous items have survived until today. \nThis gallery talk is included in regular museum admission. There’s no need to pre-register! \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at nbelanger@connecticutmuseum.org.

SUMMARY:"Not Exactly a Paradise": Fighting Segregation in Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans associate civil rights protest with the 1950s and 1960s\, but by then black Americans had resisted oppression vigorously for generations. Our current exhibition\, Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow\, looks at segregation and resistance from 1865 to 1920. In this program\, we’ll take a closer look at how that played out in Connecticut. As a visiting minister said in a sermon at Shiloh Baptist Church in 1926\, life in the North\, while freer than the South\,  “was not exactly a paradise” for people of color.  We’ll look at archival documents\, newspaper accounts\, and photographs to learn about how Jim Crow manifested itself in our state\, and how people fought back. \nThis program is included with museum admission. Kindly RSVP at (860) 236-5621 x238 or by emailing rsvp@chs.org. \nImage: Group of Women at Shiloh Baptist Church\, Hartford\, CT\, 1916-1927\, CMCH 1995.36.1194

SUMMARY:“No Votes\, Thank You”: Connecticut’s Anti-Suffrage Movement
DESCRIPTION:When you think of women’s fight for the right to vote\, it might be hard to imagine that any woman would oppose it. But thousands of CT women in the 1910s fought tooth-and-nail against woman suffrage\, even some who were tireless advocates for other forms of social justice. Why? What values underlay the anti-suffrage campaign? Join Adult Programs Manager Natalie Belanger in the WWI exhibit for a deep dive into this topic. We’ll look at photos\, letters and pamphlets from this period\, including the archives of the Connecticut Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage\, to understand one of the most hard-fought political battles of the WWI era. \nThis program is free with museum admission. SUMMARY:“YOU MUST GO HOME CLEAN!”: Venereal Disease And the War
DESCRIPTION:When the U.S. entered WWI\, it had to dramatically increase the size of its military. The drafting of recruits revealed a major problem: there was a massive epidemic of venereal disease in America. In response\, the government launched a nationwide battle against sexually transmitted infections. What steps did they take? Were they successful? And what effect did this have on other efforts at social reform in early 20th-century America? In this discussion\, led by Adult Programs Manager Natalie Belanger\, we’ll look at photos\, pamphlets and even film from this period to learn about the campaign to keep the U.S. Army “the cleanest in the world”. \nThis program is free with museum admission. SUMMARY:The 1918 Influenza Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:While Connecticut soldiers were fighting in France\, their families back home fought a battle of their own – against a deadly influenza virus. In fact\, more Connecticans died in 1918-1919 from influenza than were killed fighting in WWI. Like any crisis\, it brought out the best and worst in our citizens. SUMMARY:Behind-the-Exhibits Tour: The Making of "Facing War"
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever wonder how museums create exhibits? \nCHS’s Exhibitions team spent months researching WWI and poring through our collection looking for artifacts to help tell the story of Connecticut’s involvement in the Great War. How did they organize all that into Facing War? And what didn’t make it in? \nJoin Exhibitions team members Ben Gammell\, Melissa Traub and Melica Bloom for a “Behind-the-Exhibit” walk-through of Facing War. They’ll reveal how the exhibit came together\, and share some insider information.  How did they choose which historic objects to display?  What went into re-creating a YMCA hut inside the exhibit? They’ll dig deeper into the stories of the individuals whose lives are highlighted in the exhibit: a conscientious objector who was beaten and jailed for his beliefs\, a nurse who contracted influenza while caring for patients\, a civil rights activist-turned-soldier who spoke out against the unequal conditions for black troops\, and more. \nThis program is free with museum admission. Kindly RSVP at (860) 236-5621 x238 or by emailing rsvp@chs.org. Questions? Email Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at natalie_belanger@chs.org or call (860) 236-5621 x289. \nThrough December 1\, CMCH is collecting personal care items for military service members in partnership with Blue Star Mothers of America.
Please pitch in by bringing an item. Learn more here.
