SUMMARY:Hamilton: How the Musical Remixes American History
DESCRIPTION:Hamilton: An American Musical is a legitimate pop-culture phenomenon. Its December run at the Bushnell in Hartford sold out in record-breaking time. Its crafty lyrics\, hip-hop tunes\, and big\, bold story have even rejuvenated interest in the real lives and true histories that Hamilton puts center stage. \nIn this talk\, which is aimed at people who’ve seen the show or know the soundtrack\, historian Richard Bell explores this musical phenomenon to reveal what its success tells us about the marriage of history and show-business. We’ll learn what this amazing musical got right and got wrong about Alexander Hamilton\, the American Revolution\, and the birth of the United States  — and about why that matters. We will examine some of the choices Hamilton’s creators made to simplify\, dramatize\, and humanize the complicated events and stories on which the show is based. We will also talk about Hamilton’s cultural impact: what does its runaway success reveal about the stories we tell each other about who we are and about the nation we made? \nAdmission is $10 for CMCH members\, $15 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased in advance online (click here) or at the door.  Complimentary light refreshments will be served. \nIf you plan to attend\, kindly email rsvp@chs.org or call 860-236-5621 ext. 238; this helps us better serve our patrons! \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at natalie_belanger@chs.org. \nAbout Our Speaker \nRichard Bell (Ph.D. Harvard) is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland. His research interests focus on American history between 1750 and 1877. His published work includes We Shall Be No More: Suicide and Self-Government in the Newly United States (2012)\, and Buried Lives: Incarcerated in Early America (2012). Prof. Bell is also the author of several journal articles\, most recently in the Journal of the Early Republic\, Early American Literature\, Slavery and Abolition\, and History Compass. Prof. Bell has held research fellowships at more than a dozen libraries and institutes\, including the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery\, Abolition and Resistance at Yale University. He is also a frequent lecturer and debater on the C-Span television network. He is the recipient of more than a dozen teaching awards.

SUMMARY:The Unexpected History Of American Food
DESCRIPTION:What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? \nYour answer depends on what you define as “weird”\, right? Here at CMCH\, our latest exhibit\, That’s Weird\, probes the very idea of weirdness. On Saturday\, April 14\, we’re going to focus that lens on food. How do fashions and trends affect the way Americans eat\, turning yesterday’s “yum” into tomorrow’s “yuck” – or vice versa? \nThis program features a talk by culinary historian Sarah Lohman\, who will help us examine how we determine what’s ordinary and what’s odd when it comes to food. She will focus on two particular flavors that have gone through ups and downs in American food trends: garlic (once dismissed by American cookbook author Amelia Simmons as “better adapted to the uses of medicine than cookery”) and the much-maligned MSG. \nMs. Lohman will also be available to sign copies of her book\, Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine. The book will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event will be American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted. \nAdmission is $10 for CMCH members and $15 for non-members\, and includes admission to our galleries. Reservations requested at rsvp@chs.org or 860-236-5621 x238. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDubbed a “historic gastronomist\,” Sarah Lohman works with culinary history as a way to make a personal connection with the past. She chronicles her explorations in culinary history on her blog\, FourPoundsFlour.com\, and her work has been featured in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, the NY Post\, The Atlantic and NPR. She appeared in The Cooking Channel’s Food: Fact or Fiction. \n

SUMMARY:Bicentennial Celebration of President James Monroe’s Tour of the Northern States
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 200th anniversary of President James Monroe’s visit to Hartford! \nDuring the summer of 1817\, President James Monroe went on a “Tour of Inspection” through the Northern States and stopped to visit Hartford on June 23rd.  During his visit he met students at the American School for the Deaf.  Monroe’s “old-fashioned” bicorn hat became the inspiration for the American Sign Language sign for “president.”  Celebrate this historic visit and drop-in to make your own paper “bicorn hat!” \nImage courtesy of the James Monroe Museum\, photograph by Bruce M. SUMMARY:Grandma’s Mixing Bowls: Saving Family Treasures\, Telling Family Stories
DESCRIPTION:Every family has objects that are special to them\, but might not seem special to anyone else. But will they still seem special to future generations? How do you make sure those items are preserved\, and that the stories of the people who used them and loved them are saved\, as well? Downsizing often adds pressure to these decisions\, but Professional Organizer Regina Sanchez will share strategies to separate the treasure from the clutter and to save the story with the mixing bowls. CMCH staff will also be on hand to tell you what you need to know if you’re considering donating your treasure to us or another museum. We can’t promise that your minimalist grandkids will want your collection of commemorative dashboard ornaments\, but we can help you tell a great story about them around the holiday table. \nRegina Sanchez is a Professional Organizer and Certified Home Movie and Photo Organizer. She loves teaching clients how to bring order into their home or small business by showing them methods and systems to stay organized. Working with clients to help them preserve their memories is another part of her business that fulfills her with incredible joy as she helps individuals tell their stories\, preserve their memories and create a legacy that will last forever. \nThis program is free with general admission and open to the public. It will be held in conjunction with our Collecting Day for Growing Up in Connecticut. Be sure and bring an object to loan us for the exhibit! If you contribute an object\, image or story\, we’ll give you free admission to the museum galleries for the day.
