DESCRIPTION:This August 15 (rain date August 16) event will feature El Conjunto Guajiba y Sharina “La reinita que canta.” They will present jíbaro music\, rural folk music from the countryside and mountains of Puerto Rico. Director Roberto Piñeiro is a musical powerhouse with years of playing in different traditional music ensembles around New England and Puerto Rico. Sharina De Leon\, “the songbird\,” is a fourth-generation trovadora who improvises lyrical rhymes in the songs. Come hear the music that some feel embodies the feeling and flavor of Boricua pride! \nThis concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and the music begins at 6 PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, or pick up a delicious meal or snacks from a food truck\, which will be on site from 4:30 – 7:00pm! \nThis concert is the final performance of the 2019 season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series on summer third Thursdays\, which presents the work of the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP)\, a statewide initiative that documents diverse cultural traditions and shares the artistic creations and community cultural practices of folk artists living throughout Connecticut. Sharina De Leon\, “el pájaro cantor”\, es una trovadora de cuarta generación que improvisa rimas líricas en las canciones. ¡Venga a escuchar la música que algunos piensan encarna el sentimiento y el sabor del orgullo boricua! \nEl concierto tendrá lugar en el césped de la Sociedad Histórica de Connecticut (CHS) localizada en 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. El espacio estará abierto para apartar su lugar y empezar su picnic a partir de las 5 p.m.\, y la música comienza a las 6 p.m. Todos los conciertos al aire libre son gratuitos y disponibles al público. At Zikina’s performance\, audiences can hear how East African instruments like the enanga\, kalimba\, and adungu merge with the African diasporic traditions of rock\, jazz\, and funk into something new. \nThe concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. SUMMARY:Outdoor Concert Series: An Evening of Irish Music and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Sharing the stage for the first time\, four Irish music masters based in New England will showcase fiddle music\, step dancing\, and old-style singing. Performing both individually and collaboratively\, artists include: Traditional dancer Kevin Doyle\, designated as a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts; Bridget Fitzgerald\, performer of the Irish traditional style of unaccompanied singing known as sean nos (Old style); fiddle player Dan Foster who will play tunes from his extensive repertoire and provide accompaniment for Kevin’s dancing; and Mary Lee Partington\, a singer/songwriter inspired by local traditions and stories who is an apprentice to Bridget\, learning sean nos songs. \nThese brilliant artists share a deep love for Irish heritage as expressed through music and dance. Committed to passing on their knowledge to up-and-coming practitioners who will carry the traditions forward\, all have participated in the CMCH-based Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. \nThe concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and the music begins at 6 PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food. \nThis concert opens the third season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series on summer third Thursdays with generous support from the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee; and the national Endowment for the Arts and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \nThe concert is part of Make Music Day\, a global celebration of live\, free music in over 800 places including ten Connecticut cities. Hartford’s participation is being coordinated by the Greater Hartford Arts Council.  \nMore about the artists: \n \nKevin Doyle was honored as a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow in 2014.  Kevin is a dancer devoted to and inspired by steps brought to the United States by his Irish-born mother in the 1930s. He performs old style traditional Irish step dance and American tap dance. A lifelong dancer and performer\, Kevin was a U.S. Champion Irish step dancer in his early competitive years\, and has been entertaining audiences ever since with his traditional style of “close to the ground” rhythms and intricate foot work as an artist\, a choreographer\, producer\, and teacher. \n \nDan Foster\, a fiddle player from York\, England\, moved to the US in 2015 and settled in CT with his wife\, Irish dancer Courtney Jay. Dan began playing violin at age 7\, falling in love with traditional fiddling at 18. He has studied with master fiddlers in Ireland and has developed a career playing fiddle for Irish dance competitions\, as well as teaching widely in New England. Dan’s traditional music group Daymark tours regularly and he also plays with Caravan of Thieves. \n \nBridget Fitzgerald\, raised in County Galway\, Ireland\, is a leading figure in the United States for old-style\, unaccompanied singing in the Irish language\, as well as songs in English. She was a founding member of Cherish the Ladies\, and is cited as a major influence on a generation of traditional singers. Bridget toured with the National Endowment for the Arts Women’s Singing Traditions of New England\, and her recent CD Two Sides of a Coyne is noted for capturing the remarkable dualities of her art. \n \nMary Lee Partington is an award winning singer and songwriter inspired by local traditions in song and story from the Blackstone River Valley\, the State of Rhode Island\, and the New England region\, often working from historic music\, literary texts\, and ephemera. She is one-half of the new folk music duo Partington & Sweeney\, PS. Additionally\, she collaborates as writer and singer for Roscommon Soles with Irish stepdancer Kevin Doyle.

Performing both individually and collaboratively\, artists include: Traditional dancer Kevin Doyle\, designated as a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts; Bridget Fitzgerald\, performer of the Irish traditional style of unaccompanied singing known as sean nos (Old style); fiddle player Dan Foster who will play tunes from his extensive repertoire and provide accompaniment for Kevin’s dancing; and Mary Lee Partington\, a singer/songwriter inspired by local traditions and stories who is an apprentice to Bridget\, learning sean nos songs. \nThese brilliant artists share a deep love for Irish heritage as expressed through music and dance. Committed to passing on their knowledge to up-and-coming practitioners who will carry the traditions forward\, all have participated in the CMCH-based Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. \nThe concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St.\, Hartford. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and the music begins at 6 PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food. \nThis concert opens the third season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series on summer third Thursdays with generous support from the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee; and the national Endowment for the Arts and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \nThe concert is part of Make Music Day\, a global celebration of live\, free music in over 800 places including ten Connecticut cities. Hartford’s participation is being coordinated by the Greater Hartford Arts Council.  \nMore about the artists: \n \nKevin Doyle was honored as a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow in 2014.  Kevin is a dancer devoted to and inspired by steps brought to the United States by his Irish-born mother in the 1930s. He performs old style traditional Irish step dance and American tap dance. A lifelong dancer and performer\, Kevin was a U.S. Champion Irish step dancer in his early competitive years\, and has been entertaining audiences ever since with his traditional style of “close to the ground” rhythms and intricate foot work as an artist\, a choreographer\, producer\, and teacher. \n \nDan Foster\, a fiddle player from York\, England\, moved to the US in 2015 and settled in CT with his wife\, Irish dancer Courtney Jay. Dan began playing violin at age 7\, falling in love with traditional fiddling at 18. He has studied with master fiddlers in Ireland and has developed a career playing fiddle for Irish dance competitions\, as well as teaching widely in New England. Dan’s traditional music group Daymark tours regularly and he also plays with Caravan of Thieves. \n \nBridget Fitzgerald\, raised in County Galway\, Ireland\, is a leading figure in the United States for old-style\, unaccompanied singing in the Irish language\, as well as songs in English. She was a founding member of Cherish the Ladies\, and is cited as a major influence on a generation of traditional singers. Bridget toured with the National Endowment for the Arts Women’s Singing Traditions of New England\, and her recent CD Two Sides of a Coyne is noted for capturing the remarkable dualities of her art. \n \nMary Lee Partington is an award winning singer and songwriter inspired by local traditions in song and story from the Blackstone River Valley\, the State of Rhode Island\, and the New England region\, often working from historic music\, literary texts\, and ephemera. She is one-half of the new folk music duo Partington & Sweeney\, PS. Additionally\, she collaborates as writer and singer for Roscommon Soles with Irish stepdancer Kevin Doyle.

Since then the group has become well known for its joyous and authentic performances in festival\, concert\, church\, and community settings\, and they have established three additional academies – in Hartford\, Bridgeport\, and West Haven. Rodbel Virula is teaching guitarron (bass guitar) to a young musician under the CMCH Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. SUMMARY:Outdoor Concert Series: Alfred Rivera and Amor y Cultura - Puerto Rican traditional instruments and jibaro songs
DESCRIPTION:The CMCH Third Thursday concert series celebrates the 25th anniversary of Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP)\, a statewide initiative that documents diverse cultural traditions and shares the artistic creations and community cultural practices of folk artists living throughout Connecticut. \nOn July 21 (rain date July 22) Alfred Rivera and Amor y Cultura will perform Puerto Rican musica tipica\, traditional jibaro music of the countryside and mountains\, featuring bongos\, guitar\, guiro (gourd scraper)\, vocals\, and the signature instrument of this style – the cuatro.  Members of the group grew up in Puerto Rican family and community musical traditions\, which include improvised sung poetry accompanied by instruments playing special folk music forms such as the décima. \nAll concerts are free. Grounds open at 5:00 pm and concerts will play from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. \nPlease bring your own camp chairs and picnics. \nThe Outdoor Concert Series is supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD\, and the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The CMCH Third Thursday concert series celebrates the 25th anniversary of Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP)\, a statewide initiative that documents diverse cultural traditions and shares the artistic creations and community cultural practices of folk artists living throughout Connecticut. \nOn June 16 (rain date June 17) we present Daniel Boucher\, a dynamic French Canadian fiddler from Bristol CT\, along with guitarist and singer Josée Vachon\, and friends on accordion and spoons. Daniel grew up absorbing French musical traditions in his family\, becoming an accomplished fiddler\, singer\, and composer. He has revitalized French folk music within the large community of French descent living in New England by organizing Maple Sugar parties\, St Jean de Baptiste celebrations (this year on June 24)\, and music soirées attended by hundreds of French speakers and music lovers. Daniel won a Connecticut Office of the Arts Folk Arts Fellowship in 2015 for his musical excellence and contributions to heritage. Josée Vachon is a popular singer of beloved folk songs from the French Canadian repertoire. \nAll concerts are free. Grounds open at 5:00 pm and concerts will play from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. \nPlease bring your own camp chairs and picnics. \nThe Outdoor Concert Series is supported by the Evelyn W.
