DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of the Día de Muertos celebration\, a time to honor\, remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones who have passed\, New England Donor Services / Done Vida New England is proud to participate in the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s weeklong celebration from November 1st to November 8th\, located at One Elizabeth Street\, Hartford\, CT 06105. \nWe invite you to visit our beautifully crafted donation altar (ofrenda)\, created to honor the memory and legacy of our donor heroes\, who gave the gift of LIFE to others\, through organ and tissue donation. \nJoin us for a heartfelt gathering in tribute to our donor heroes. Through donor families’ stories\, poetry\, and traditional live music\, we will remember and celebrate the lives they lived and the legacy they leave behind. \nIn true Día de Muertos tradition\, we’ll share pan de muerto\, hot chocolate\, and light refreshments as we come together in community to remember\, reflect\, and give thanks. \nThis is a time for healing\, connection\, and honoring the enduring power of love and generosity\, in life and death. Former State Representative Pat Wilson Pheanious\, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Witness Stones Project\, Inc.\, shares her family’s story in Connecticut Public’s new series Unforgotten: Connecticut’s Hidden History of Slavery; Akeia de Barros Gomes\, Senior Curator of Maritime Social Histories at the Mystic Seaport Museum previews the upcoming exhibition Entwined: Freedom\, Sovereignty and the Sea; and Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Blight discusses the new book Yale and Slavery: A History. Panelists will talk about the projects and explore big questions that have led to this moment. Moderated by Diane Orson\, Special Correspondent with Connecticut Public. SUMMARY:Traditions without Borders
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first public viewing of the short film\, Traditions without Borders/Tradiciones sin Fronteras. This mini-documentary\, directed by Boceto Media’s Maricarmen Cajahuaringa\, showcases the cultural traditions surrounding The Lord of Miracles (el Señor de Milagros) in Hartford\, which draws thousands of participants annually. \nOver 30\,000 Peruvians live in Connecticut\, and this faith tradition is deeply rooted in the Peruvian community. In Hartford\, the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles (HESMIPERU)\, a religious fraternity organized locally in 1968\, holds a mass and solemn procession through the streets around Our Lady of Sorrows Church\, carrying its revered statue of the Lord of Miracles. The group and its women’s auxiliary organize festivities surrounding the ritual including food\, dance\, and music. This special walnut box was used to preserve human remains before the common practice of embalming. \nU﻿Conn Tech Park\, Connecticut Museum of Culture and History Museum and Library\, and CT Tech Council bring you a special evening of looking into the past using high-tech research equipment. \nUConn has spent hours doing 3D imaging and the results will be shared publicly for the first time at the event.
