SUMMARY:Tour and Talkback
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this opportunity to discuss the modern-day repercussions of America’s long denial of full citizenship for African Americans. \nThrough September 14\, CMCH hosts Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow\, a traveling exhibit from the New-York Historical Society. The exhibit explores the struggle for full citizenship and racial equality that unfolded in the 50 years after the Civil War. It explores the roots of modern-day issues such as voter suppression\, mass incarceration\, and white supremacist terrorism. \nOn June 6 and July 20\, we invite members of the public to attend a special tour of the exhibition\, followed by a group discussion of how the exhibition helps us to understand contemporary issues surrounding justice and equality . The tour will be led by CMCH staff\, and the discussion will be facilitated by staff from Everyday Democracy – learn more about their mission here. \nThis is a free event. Light refreshments will be served. Please let us know you’re coming by emailing rsvp@chs.org. Questions? Contact Adult Programs Manager Natalie Belanger at natalie_belanger@chs.org.

SUMMARY:Exhibit tour of "Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow"
DESCRIPTION:Join us each Saturday for a staff-guided tour of this thought-provoking exhibit. \nThe exhibition highlights the ways in which black Americans resisted oppression\, defined their own lives\, and found strength within their communities. But the story of Jim Crow is grim and sometimes shockingly violent. The materials in the exhibit do not shy away from these realities. Visitors should be prepared for emotional responses to some of the material. \nThis tour is included with museum admission. \nThis exhibition has been organized by the New-York Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Behind-the-Exhibits Tour: The Making of "Facing War"
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever wonder how museums create exhibits? \nCHS’s Exhibitions team spent months researching WWI and poring through our collection looking for artifacts to help tell the story of Connecticut’s involvement in the Great War. How did they organize all that into Facing War? And what didn’t make it in? \nJoin Exhibitions team members Ben Gammell\, Melissa Traub and Melica Bloom for a “Behind-the-Exhibit” walk-through of Facing War. They’ll reveal how the exhibit came together\, and share some insider information.  How did they choose which historic objects to display?  What went into re-creating a YMCA hut inside the exhibit? They’ll dig deeper into the stories of the individuals whose lives are highlighted in the exhibit: a conscientious objector who was beaten and jailed for his beliefs\, a nurse who contracted influenza while caring for patients\, a civil rights activist-turned-soldier who spoke out against the unequal conditions for black troops\, and more. \nThis program is free with museum admission. Kindly RSVP at (860) 236-5621 x238 or by emailing rsvp@chs.org. Questions? Email Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at natalie_belanger@chs.org or call (860) 236-5621 x289. \nThrough December 1\, CMCH is collecting personal care items for military service members in partnership with Blue Star Mothers of America. Please pitch in by bringing an item. Learn more here.
