SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Speak Up at CMCH: Advanced Storytelling Workshop with Matt Dicks
DESCRIPTION:**This sold-out event has been POSTPONED** \nSpeak Up co-founder\, bestselling novelist\, and 45-time Moth StorySLAM winner and 6-time GrandSLAM champion Matthew Dicks will be teaching a day-long workshop for those ready to move beyond the beginning workshop and tell their own stories. \nUnlike our beginner’s class\, which allows participants to be passive learners if they so choose\, the advanced version of the workshop is a more interactive\, performance-based model. Participants will be encouraged to tell a story of their own in a low stakes\, highly supportive environment – though they need not come to the workshop with a story prepared. Stories can be found and crafted as a part of the workshop. Much of the instruction is driven through the stories told by participants\, so there is ample opportunity for actual storytelling. There is also a focus on performance techniques\, improvisational games\, and the explicit modeling of the crafting of a new story. \nWhile it’s recommended that storytellers take a beginner’s workshop first\, it is not required. \nRegistration is $120 for CMCH members and $140 for non-members. REGISTER ONLINE HERE. \nLunch is not included\, but there will be a lunch break. Bring your own or ask CMCH staff about local eateries. \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger at (860) 236-5621 x289 or by email at natalie_belanger@chs.org.

SUMMARY:Speak Up at CMCH: Beginner Storytelling Workshop with Speak Up co-Founder Matthew Dicks
DESCRIPTION:Speak Up co-founder and 38-time Moth StorySLAM winner and 6-time GrandSLAM champion Matthew Dicks will be teaching a day-long workshop on the art of storytelling. This is a workshop designed for a wide range of people\, including those with little or no previous storytelling experience. \nWhile many workshop graduates have gone on to tell stories on stage for Speak Up\, The Moth\, and other storytelling organizations\, many students take this beginner-level workshop with little or no desire to ever take the stage. They want to learn about storytelling for personal and professional development\, to meet new people\, to improve communication skills\, to develop their writing ability\, to challenge themselves\, to finally get the attention of grandchildren\, colleagues\, or that special someone\, or to simply try something new. \nIncluded in this workshop will be:\n• Methods for finding stories in your own life\, including exercises and systems by which these stories can continue to be found and collected long after the workshop is finished\n• Crafting stories\, including finding compelling arcs and the appropriate use of stakes\, description\, suspense\, dialogue\, and more\n• Permissible\, recommended “lies” of storytelling\n• The cinema of storytelling\n• The strategic use of humor in storytelling\n• Performance techniques \nThis is a no-risk\, low stakes introduction to storytelling that does not require students to tell stories or even speak if that’s what they prefer. If you’d like to dip a toe into storytelling and learn some of the most effective\, easiest applied strategies to the finding and crafting of stories but you’re not yet ready to stand before an audience and speak\, this workshop is a safe place for you to learn. \nDue to the amount of information presented\, there is very limited opportunity for participants to present stories of their own. \n$85 CMCH members\, $95 non-members. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Tickets can be purchased here. \nLunch is not included\, but there is a lunch break. Bring your own or ask CMCH staff about local eateries.

SUMMARY:Speak Up at CMCH: Advanced Storytelling Workshop with Matthew Dicks
DESCRIPTION:We’re sorry\, but this event is now sold out. \nSpeak Up co-founder and Moth StorySLAM and GrandSLAM champion Matthew Dicks will be teaching a day-long workshop for those ready to move beyond the beginning workshop and tell their own stories. Much of the instruction is driven through the stories told by participants\, so there is ample opportunity for actual storytelling. There is also a focus on performance techniques\, microphone work\, improvisational games\, and the explicit modeling of the crafting of a new story. \nRegistration is $110 for CMCH members and $120 for non-members. Lunch is not included\, but there will be a lunch break. Bring your own or ask CMCH staff about local eateries. \n**Snow Date is Saturday February 9. \nREGISTER ONLINE HERE. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Speak Up at CMCH: Beginner Storytelling Workshop with Speak Up co-founder Matthew Dicks
DESCRIPTION:Speak Up co-founder and 34-time Moth StorySLAM winner and four time GrandSLAM champion Matthew Dicks will be teaching a day-long workshop on the art of storytelling. This is a workshop designed for a wide range of people\, including those with little or no previous storytelling experience. \nWhile many workshop graduates have gone on to tell stories on stage for Speak Up\, The Moth\, and other storytelling organizations\, most students take this beginner-level workshop with little or no desire to ever take the stage. They want to learn about storytelling for personal and professional development\, to meet new people\, to improve communication skills\, to develop their writing ability\, to challenge themselves\, to finally get the attention of grandchildren\, colleagues\, or that special someone\, or to simply try something new. \nIncluded in this workshop will be:\n• Methods for identifying the stories from your life that are best to tell and creating a system by which these stories can continue to be found and collected long after the workshop is finished\n• Effective framing of a story\n• Development of a strong\, well defined arc\n• Implementation of stakes\n• Permissible\, recommended “lies” of storytelling\n• The importance and inclusion of cinema in storytelling\n• The strategic use of humor in storytelling \nThis is a no-risk\, low stakes introduction to storytelling that does not require students to tell stories or even speak if that’s what they prefer. \nTo register\, click here. \n$85 CMCH members\, $95 non-members. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Lunch is not included\, but there is a lunch break. Bring your own or ask CMCH staff about local eateries. \n**Snow Date is Saturday February 9. \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger at (860) 236-5621 x289 or by email at natalie_belanger@chs.org.
