SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Lyman Eppes - Black Yankee and Adirondack Pioneer
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nAmy Godine’s new book\, The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier (Cornell\, Fall 2023)\, tells the story of a rich abolitionist’s bid to colonize the Adirondack wilderness in 1846 by donating 120\,000 acres to 3\,000 impoverished Black New Yorkers before the Civil War. Gerrit Smith’s land gifts aimed to ease Black access to the ballot in an age when landless Black New Yorkers were disenfranchised. Frederick Douglass and New York’s leading Black reformers promoted Smith’s proposal with zeal. \nWhat does this story have to do with Connecticut? \nJoin us for this virtual presentation\, as Amy Godine traces this Adirondack story back to two key players that have Connecticut roots: Lyman Eppes and John Brown. The militant abolitionist\, John Brown\, born in Torrington\, Connecticut\, was an advocate of Smith’s plan and moved his family to Timbuctoo\, a new Black enclave in the Adirondack woods in 1849. \nAmy Godine will also introduce us to one of Smith’s grantees\, Lyman Eppes\, who was born in Colchester\, Connecticut. Eppes migrated to the Adirondacks with his family in 1849 and became Brown’s close friend and confidante. In his new home\, North Elba\, Eppes co-founded two churches\, a singing school\, and his town’s first library. The Eppes family’s tenure in the region spanned almost a century. \nQuestions? Contact Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, Jen Busa via email at jbusa@connecticutmuseum.org. \nAbout the Speaker: Publishers Weekly called Amy Godine’s The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier (Cornell\, 2023)\, an “eye-opening…vital contribution to African American history.” From Saratoga Springs\, New York\, Amy Godine has been publishing articles and essays about Adirondack Black\, ethnic\, migratory\, and labor history\, since 1989. \nTo purchase Amy Godine’s The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier\, click here. Input discount promo code 09FLYER at check out for 30% off list price. \nTICKETS\nThis virtual event is free! Click the button below to register. \nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:Guided Tour of Connecticut's Bookshelf
DESCRIPTION:Drop in for a guided tour of our latest special exhibition\, Connecticut’s Bookshelf. Connecticut is the birthplace of comic books\, copyright law\, Noah Webster\, and the recipe for pumpkin pie. It printed the first fugitive slave narrative\, sold millions of dollars of books by subscription\, and inspired children’s sections in libraries nationwide. From the 1700s to today\, Connecticut has been compiling its bookshelf\, one sermon\, ledger\, map\, schoolbook\, law\, psalm\, newspaper\, and book at a time. Connecticut’s Bookshelf explores how these documents were made\, shared\, and received\, and asks you to consider: What belongs on the shelf? And who gets to decide? \nTours are included with museum admission. No pre-registration required! \nIf you’re interested in arranging a private tour of the exhibition for your book club\, community center\, or other group\, contact Adult Programs Manager Natalie Belanger\, nbelanger@connnecticutmuseum.org. \n

SUMMARY:The Hartford Circus Fire Remembered
DESCRIPTION:A note to patrons: The elevator that provides access to our gallery spaces and accessible bathroom is out of order. This program will be held in our ground-floor Auditorium and is fully accessible\, with no stairs required for entry. There is also a set of bathrooms on the ground level that are fully accessible\, again with no stairs required. However\, visitors who cannot climb stairs will not have access to the museum galleries\, or to the wheelchair-accessible bathroom.  \nEighty years ago\, the worst disaster in Hartford history took the lives of 168 people. The circus fire has lived in the memories of survivors and the imaginations of Connecticans ever since. On June 6th\, the Connecticut Museum welcomes Don Massey and former Hartford Fire Chief Charles A. Teale to talk about the lasting legacy of the fire. Don Massey is coauthor of A Matter of Degree: The Hartford Circus Fire and the Mystery of Little Miss 1565\, documenting arson investigator Rick Davey’s identification of one of the fire’s unclaimed victims as Eleanor Emily Cook. Chief Charles Teale co-chaired the Hartford Circus Fire Memorial Foundation\, which created a memorial to the victims on the site of the fire on Barbour Street. The conversation will be moderated by the Connecticut Museum’s Deputy Executive Director\, Ilene Frank. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThis is the second event in our 2024 Woodward Lecture Series\, in which we examine the impact and legacy of disasters\, both natural and man-made\, in our state’s history. Save the date for our last presentation in the series\, an examination of 2017’s Hurricane Maria\, which devastated Puerto Rico and sent thousands of survivors to seek refuge in Connecticut. \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at nbelanger@connecticutmuseum.org. \nTICKETS\n$15 General Admission\n$10 Members\nFREE for Connecticut Museum NARM members and above \nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:Persian Calligraphy Workshop with Alibaba Awrang
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an introduction to Persian Calligraphy with master calligrapher Alibaba Awrang. Fusing Persian letters with bright\, bold colors and patterns\, Alibaba uses both traditional and modern artistic techniques. Awrang will present an overview of calligraphy\, give a demonstration and show examples of his work\, and then assist you in creating your own piece. No experience needed; all skill levels welcome. All materials will be provided. Alibaba will also share his story\, including his position as head the Department of Calligraphy and Miniature Painting at the Turquoise Mountain Institute in Afghanistan\, an NGO founded by the former Prince of Wales (now King Charles III). \nTICKETS (includes all materials)\n$30 General Admission\n$25 Members\nFree for Connecticut Museum NARM members and above \nGET TICKETS[divider line_type=”no-line” custom_height=””]\nAbout the Artist: Awrang comes from Ghazni Province in Afghanistan. He studied calligraphy in Tehran\, Iran.\, and opened his own gallery in Kabul\, where he also taught calligraphy. His work is well known in the Eastern world\, with exhibitions in Kabul\, Tehran\, Bahrain\, Dubai\, Istanbul\, Islam Abad\, Tajikistan and Melbourne\, among others. His recent commission of a large triptych was installed in the fall of 2022 in the entry gallery of the I. M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art in Doha\, Qatar. At the pinnacle of his career\, Awrang was evacuated from Afghanistan by the U.S. Department of State in 2021\, and is relaunching his career from his new home in Connecticut. \nSince his arrival\, Awrang’s work has been featured in three exhibitions in Connecticut: a sold-out show\, From Kabul to Connecticut\, in November\, 2022\, at the Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens in Litchfield County; in a September 2023-January 2024 show at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury\, Between the Worlds: Stories of Artists and Migrations\, co-curated by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Munson-Williams Proctor Arts Institute\, and the Mattatuck Museum; and in a recent show at the Five Points Annex in Torrington\, CT. \n“While my work is rooted in ancient tradition\, it is a new kind of Islamic art\,” explains Awrang\, “striving to open a new horizon by connecting the past\, present and future through the prism of postmodernism. I depart from tradition by combining both script and painting. In every maze of my calligraphic work\, there is mystery; and in every turn and twist of its colors\, I reflect the human condition.” \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn - The Forgotten Chinese Generations
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation! \nAAPI Heritage Month was established to recognize and honor the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history\, culture\, and achievements of the United States.  However\, the generations of Chinese who first arrived in this country in the 1850s\, who helped build the transcontinental railroads in the 1860s\, who fought in its wars\, and continuing through the 1960s\, were subjected to exclusion laws that denied them opportunities to achieve the “American Dream.” \nPresenter Irving Moy will trace the hardships the Chinese had to endure using the example of Moy Chack Fong\, his father.  Irving will discuss his father’s immigration story\, and the challenges he faced to achieve a better life for himself and his family under exclusion. \nThis virtual presentation is free and open to the public. Click here to register. \nQuestions? Contact Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, Jen Busa via email at jbusa@connecticutmuseum.org. \nAbout the Speaker: Irving Moy is a first-generation Chinese American born in Bridgeport\, Connecticut\, where his parents owned and operated a Chinese hand laundry.  He is the first in his family to graduate from high school and college.  He retired as a manager with the CT Department of Public Health in healthcare regulation. Irving’s passion\, however\, is his reading and study of U.S. history\, especially\, of Abraham Lincoln\, and the Civil War Era.  In July 2008\, Governor M. Jodi Rell appointed him to serve as 1 of 15 members of the Connecticut Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.  He portrays Corporal Joseph Pierce\, a Chinese\, who enlisted in Company F\, 14th Regiment\, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry\, and fought in the Civil War\, at reenactments and living history events.  He is the author of An American Journey- My Father\, Lincoln\, Joseph Pierce\, and Me\, published in 2009\, the bicentennial year of Lincoln’s birth. \nImage: Objects from Wing Lee Laundry\, 1948-1960. 2023.14.1-.10\, Connecticut Museum of Culture and History collection.

SUMMARY:The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic
DESCRIPTION:Join us as acclaimed historian Manisha Sinha discusses her new book\, The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic: Reconstruction\, 1860-1920. The book is a groundbreaking\, expansive new account of Reconstruction that fundamentally alters our view of this formative period in American history. After the Civil War\, the victorious North attempted to create an interracial democracy in the unrepentant South\, but that effort failed—and that failure serves as a warning today about violent backlash to the mere idea of black equality. \nYou can purchase a copy of the book in advance when you click “GET TICKETS” below. Your copy will be available for pick up at the event. Copies of the book will also be available for purchase at the event\, courtesy of our friends at River Bend Book Shop. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nAbout our Speaker: Manisha Sinha is the Draper Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut. Her book\, The Slave’s Cause: A History of Abolition\, won the Frederick Douglass Book Prize among several others and was longlisted for the National Book Award for Non-Fiction. \nTickets\n$49.99 Admission plus copy of Rise and Fall: includes $5 discount off admission price\n$15 General Admission\n$10 Members\nFree for Connecticut Museum NARM members and above \nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Justices of the Peace and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nJustices of the peace ruled on colonial Americans’ smallest disputes: an overdue IOU\, a corn crop damaged by swine\, a stolen shirt\, a hurtful public accusation. Then the Revolutionary War came.  Amid the war\, as Americans sorted out their relationships to the “Glorious Cause\,” many of the judges of small causes kept their offices and continued to go about their business. \nThis virtual presentation by Hannah Farber is part of a book project on civil litigation in the early American republic\, will use surviving justices’ dockets to show how different types of magistrates–farmers\, ministers\, urban merchants\, and Patriot enforcers–handled the provision of justice to their neighbors amid Revolutionary disruption. Hannah recently conducted research at the Connecticut Museum for this project. \nThis virtual presentation is free and open to the public. Click here to register. \nQuestions? Contact Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, Jen Busa via email at jbusa@connecticutmuseum.org. \nAbout the Speaker: Hannah Farber is an assistant professor of history at Columbia University. She is the author of Underwriters of the United States: How Insurance Shaped the American Founding (Omohundro Institute/UNC Press\, 2021) and a series editor for American Beginnings: 1500-1900 at the University of Chicago Press. \nImage: Burn’s Abridgment\, or the American Justice (Dover\, New Hampshire\, 1792) \n
