SUMMARY:Workshop with Bao Phi: Amplify Asian American Voices
DESCRIPTION:Bao Phi will lead a spoken word/poetry workshop for high school students. Phi is a two-time Minnesota Grand Slam champion and a National Poetry Slam finalist. He has performed on numerous stages. His first collection of poetry\, Sông I Sing\, enjoyed rave reviews. The New York Times states\, “In this song of his very American self\, every poem Mr. Phi writes rhymes with the truth.” In 2012\, The Star Tribune’s inaugural “Best of Minnesota” issue named Bao Phi as Best Spoken Word Artist. His second poetry collection\, Thousand Star Hotel\, was nominated for a Minnesota Book Award and named by NPR as one of the Best Books of 2017. It was also named as the Best Poetry Book of 2017 by San Francisco State’s Poetry Center. This free workshop is limited to 10 students and pre-registration is required. Hartford History Center\, Hartford Public Library. \nOur Lunch and Learn series highlights scholarship around topics important to Connecticut history and culture. \nToday\, Connecticut has the highest percentage of Puerto Rican residents of any U.S. state. This presentation by Elena Rosario will trace the settlement of Puerto Ricans in the post-War World II period to highlight the development of Hartford’s early Puerto Rican community. It will focus on the ways Puerto Ricans settled into the city by examining historical moments and cultural events such as the 1964 Connecticut Puerto Rican Day and parade.  \nThis presentation is virtual and free. Her research interests include labor\, education\, urban development\, social movements\, and identity formation. She is a member of Hartford’s Puerto Rican community and received her B.A. from Connecticut College in 2014.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Dexter's Lab
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special outdoor concert celebration for Juneteenth\, featuring music from Dexter’s Lab and an original presentation from Hartford artist Jedda Williams! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and the Curbside Vibes food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel.\n\nAbout the Artists\nDexter Pettaway\, the director of Dexter’s Lab\, has played drums since he was a young child raised in the musical environment of the Black Christian church. He went on to study jazz percussion and excelled there\, yet he remains deeply connected to the cultural roots of this music\, serving as music director for multiple churches in the Hartford area during the last fifteen years\, and he continues to support his local church in their music ministry. A versatile performer with many Hartford connections\, Dexter can also be found performing at Black Eyed Sally’s and Bushnell Park\, as well as teaching drums at home\, at his studio\, or at churches. \nPettaway argues that the church formed the basis for many forms of Black music\, including gospel\, R&B\, and jazz. As a professional drummer\, Pettaway has recorded and played alongside jazz artists like Phil Perry\, David Davis\, Mary Taylor\, Lisa Glover\, Maysa\, and Asa Livingston\, as well as gospel artists like Vicky Mariconde\, Jonathan Dubose Jr.\, Nile Parker\, H. Doobie Powell\, Marlowe Smith\, and Jeffrey Holmes. As Dexter’s Lab\, Pettaway calls on his community of excellent musicians\, some of whom he has played with for over 20 years\, to play jazz\, soul\, gospel\, and R&B for appreciative audiences locally and beyond. \nDexter’s Lab will be joined by Anne Marie “Jedda” Williams\, who will be making a special presentation in honor of Juneteenth. Jedda is an Early Childhood Educator\, Master Teaching Artist\, an Educational Program Designer\, and Performing Artist who is a songstress\, dancer and actress\, and an architect of each form. She is the founder\, artisan and educational program designer of K La Rue Educational Art in Motion “Where Learning is an Adventure!” which was inspired in 1986 and established in 1987. Jedda serves as  an educational resource for schools\, teachers and parents in the Greater Hartford area and the surrounding towns for the past thirty-five years. She will be making a special presentation in honor of Juneteenth. \nInside the museum\, we’ll also have a special corner display of artifacts from the CMCH collection that help tell the story of African American history in Connecticut. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. SUMMARY:Mental Health in the LGBTQ+ Community
DESCRIPTION:Members of the LGBTQ+ community are at higher risk for experiencing mental health conditions. In this panel discussion\, practitioners and community advocates will talk about the challenges that face this community in accessing mental health care\, including the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.   \nOur panelists include psychologist Dr. Richard Stillson\, psychologist Dr. Laura Saunders of Hartford Health Care\, and Edson Rivas\, director of the Triangle Community Center in Norwalk. The conversation will be moderated by Ilene Frank\, CMCH Chief Curator.   \nThis event is presented in support of the CMCH’s exhibition\, Common Struggle\, Individual Experience: An Exhibition About Mental Health. Come early to view the exhibition before the program! Doors open at 5:00 pm.  \nThis event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.  Please let us know if you plan to attend! \nAbout our Panelists  \nDr. Richard Stillson (ze\, zir\, they\, them) is a licensed psychologist who is in semi-retirement after 26 years working for the State of CT in a variety of inpatient\, outpatient and residential services for people with mental health\, substance use and intellectual/developmental disabilities. Ze is in private practice with transgender and gender variant individuals at Hartford Psychological Services providing a group intervention for the past 5 years. Ze is also the Clinical Director providing supervision to students and consultation to clinical staff. Ze has clinical expertise in CBT\, DBT\, co-occurring disorders\, ART\, trauma-informed care and sees people in all modalities of group\, couples\, family and individual. Ze is a non-binary\, gay human.  \nEdson Rivas (he\,him\, his) is the Executive Director of Triangle Community Center\, an LGBTQ+ center focused on providing programs and services centered around community\, health and learning. He took over as TCC’s ED in July of 2020 and comes from a finance background working with publicly traded companies. Edson has been involved with TCC since 2015\, joining the Board of Directors and rotating through various executive positions before becoming Board President in 2020. TCC’s clinical department works with LCSW and LMFT’s to provide care to our clients as well as supervision for MSW and MFT students that go through our internship program. \nLaura M. I. Saunders\, Psy.D. ABPP (she/her/hers) is a staff psychologist working in Young Adult Services at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital. Dr. Saunders is the Clinical Coordinator of The Right Track/LGBTQ Intensive Outpatient program in Young Adult Services for individuals struggling with co-occurring emotional difficulties\, minority stress and identity development. In 2015\, Dr. Saunders was named the Employee of the Year for Hartford Hospital. In 2019\, Dr. Saunders was the recipient of the Ned Graffagnino Award for distinguished service in the areas of community-oriented work and collaboration with other mental health professionals. She is the Director of the newly formed Center for Gender Health at Hartford Healthcare. Areas of expertise include LGBTQ mental health\, child psychopathology\, behavior management\, parent training and family therapy. She appears regularly in local TV news to provide psychological input on topics relevant to youth and families and currently has a weekly segment on WFSB/Ch. 3 Great Day CT related to child mental health.

Beyond the flashy costumes and musical drama\, what was it really like to fight in the war? In this noontime talk\, historian Robert A. Selig takes a look at one of the darkest sides of any battle: the clean-up.  \nBattlefield clean-up is a topic rarely covered by modern historians\, yet following almost any military engagement\, there are corpses to dispose of. Who does that? Can we tell who buried whom? When? How many hours\, days\, months later? Where? Individually or in mass graves? In natural crevices? Lakes? Naked or dressed? Officers and other ranks together or separate? How long do they remain in the ground? Are they ever found? Who would dig them up and why? Can we identify them? SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Orquesta Afinke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for salsa from Bridgeport featuring Orquesta Afinke! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and Samba’s Cuisine food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel.\n\nAbout the Band\nBridgeport band Orquesta Afinke was founded as a way to entertain as well as educate about Latin American music and cultures. Afinque is Spanish slang\, meaning that the group playing together has tight rhythms—they have it together. The band was founded by trombonist Tito Planas and percussionist Samuel Diaz\, Jr.\, who both grew up in local Puerto Rican music traditions\, and are also committed music educators. All the band members are Puerto Rican musicians from Bridgeport\, and the group was founded in 2009 out of an opportunity to serve the local community. \n“If you listen to the music and rhythms\, it really talks about the island\, the history\,” says Diaz\, and this is what he and the other members of the band make clear. They perform to entertain as well as teach about the cultural roots of the music\, which includes salsa\, merengue\, plena\, bolero\, cumbia\, and Latin jazz\, as well as the cultural histories of the instruments they play. All the musicians are seasoned professionals\, and have played alongside famous salsa artists such as Frankie Negron\, Tony Vega\, Choco Orta\, Charlie Cruz\, Kevin Ceballo\, Raulin Rosendo\, and Los Hermanos Moreno. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee; the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The CMCH is happy to be hosting his Book Launch Party Extravaganza! \nThe evening will feature storytelling\, brand new strategies for making your creative dreams come true\, audience participation\, giveaways\, books for sale\, book signing\, lots and lots of laughs\, and more. \nJoining Matthew onstage will be Elysha Dicks\, author of the foreword to the book\, Matthew Shepard\, author of the afterword\, Jeni Bonaldo\, frequently maligned figure in the pages of the book\, and many more. \nA suggested donation of $10 – all proceeds go directly to the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. DESCRIPTION:Explore the stories behind Connecticut’s nicknames and symbols! Families will look closely at objects made using wood from the Charter Oak in a special\, pop-up display available for a limited time only! Then\, they will grate nutmeg\, write with a quill pen\, make a praying mantis using a clothespin\, and create a miniature version of the iconic Charter Oak tree! \nThanks to Connecticut Summer at the Museum\, this program is FREE for Connecticut children age 18 and under plus one accompanying Connecticut resident adult. This program is great for children of all ages\, and you do not need to pre-register.
