This talk will include the Amistad affair as it pertains to Connecticut\, and John Quincy Adams’ arguments in front of the Supreme Court resulting in the freeing of the captives. Denman is the author of John Quincy Adams\, Reluctant Abolitionist. He is the co-author of Greene and Cornwallis: The Pivotal Struggle of the American Revolution\, 1780-1781.  His research focuses primarily on the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth centuries in American history.  Jeff is a graduate of the University of Maine and the University of Connecticut and is a retired teacher of American History and World Geography in the Brookline Public Schools\, Brookline\, Massachusetts. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Justices of the Peace and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nJustices of the peace ruled on colonial Americans’ smallest disputes: an overdue IOU\, a corn crop damaged by swine\, a stolen shirt\, a hurtful public accusation. Then the Revolutionary War came.  Amid the war\, as Americans sorted out their relationships to the “Glorious Cause\,” many of the judges of small causes kept their offices and continued to go about their business. \nThis virtual presentation by Hannah Farber is part of a book project on civil litigation in the early American republic\, will use surviving justices’ dockets to show how different types of magistrates–farmers\, ministers\, urban merchants\, and Patriot enforcers–handled the provision of justice to their neighbors amid Revolutionary disruption. During this program\, all ages can experience and enjoy the traditional Indian art forms of Kuchipudi Dance and Carnatic music that embody stories from ancient scriptures. Families will also have the opportunity to learn more about the cultural\, social\, and historical significance of this art form and make some crafts to take home! Performances will take place from 11:30 – 12:15 and again from 1:00 – 1:45. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation! \nAAPI Heritage Month was established to recognize and honor the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history\, culture\, and achievements of the United States.  However\, the generations of Chinese who first arrived in this country in the 1850s\, who helped build the transcontinental railroads in the 1860s\, who fought in its wars\, and continuing through the 1960s\, were subjected to exclusion laws that denied them opportunities to achieve the “American Dream.” \nPresenter Irving Moy will trace the hardships the Chinese had to endure using the example of Moy Chack Fong\, his father.  Irving will discuss his father’s immigration story\, and the challenges he faced to achieve a better life for himself and his family under exclusion. \nThis virtual presentation is free and open to the public. Irving’s passion\, however\, is his reading and study of U.S. history\, especially\, of Abraham Lincoln\, and the Civil War Era.  In July 2008\, Governor M. Jodi Rell appointed him to serve as 1 of 15 members of the Connecticut Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.  He portrays Corporal Joseph Pierce\, a Chinese\, who enlisted in Company F\, 14th Regiment\, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry\, and fought in the Civil War\, at reenactments and living history events.  He is the author of An American Journey- My Father\, Lincoln\, Joseph Pierce\, and Me\, published in 2009\, the bicentennial year of Lincoln’s birth. \nImage: Objects from Wing Lee Laundry\, 1948-1960. 2023.14.1-.10\, Connecticut Museum of Culture and History collection.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an introduction to Persian Calligraphy with master calligrapher Alibaba Awrang. Fusing Persian letters with bright\, bold colors and patterns\, Alibaba uses both traditional and modern artistic techniques. Awrang will present an overview of calligraphy\, give a demonstration and show examples of his work\, and then assist you in creating your own piece. No experience needed; all skill levels welcome. All materials will be provided. Alibaba will also share his story\, including his position as head the Department of Calligraphy and Miniature Painting at the Turquoise Mountain Institute in Afghanistan\, an NGO founded by the former Prince of Wales (now King Charles III). \nTICKETS (includes all materials)\n$30 General Admission\n$25 Members\nFree for Connecticut Museum NARM members and above \nGET TICKETS[divider line_type=”no-line” custom_height=””]\nAbout the Artist: Awrang comes from Ghazni Province in Afghanistan. He studied calligraphy in Tehran\, Iran.\, and opened his own gallery in Kabul\, where he also taught calligraphy. His work is well known in the Eastern world\, with exhibitions in Kabul\, Tehran\, Bahrain\, Dubai\, Istanbul\, Islam Abad\, Tajikistan and Melbourne\, among others. His recent commission of a large triptych was installed in the fall of 2022 in the entry gallery of the I. M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art in Doha\, Qatar. At the pinnacle of his career\, Awrang was evacuated from Afghanistan by the U.S. Department of State in 2021\, and is relaunching his career from his new home in Connecticut. \nSince his arrival\, Awrang’s work has been featured in three exhibitions in Connecticut: a sold-out show\, From Kabul to Connecticut\, in November\, 2022\, at the Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens in Litchfield County; in a September 2023-January 2024 show at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury\, Between the Worlds: Stories of Artists and Migrations\, co-curated by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Munson-Williams Proctor Arts Institute\, and the Mattatuck Museum; and in a recent show at the Five Points Annex in Torrington\, CT. \n“While my work is rooted in ancient tradition\, it is a new kind of Islamic art\,” explains Awrang\, “striving to open a new horizon by connecting the past\, present and future through the prism of postmodernism. I depart from tradition by combining both script and painting. In every maze of my calligraphic work\, there is mystery; and in every turn and twist of its colors\, I reflect the human condition.” \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Bring your family\, your skates\, your helmets and your game face and experience unique community sports like roller derby\, skateboarding\, double Dutch\, and more at this FREE outdoor event for visitors of all ages! Meet and learn from local athletes throughout the day\, and take part in activities and crafts![divider line_type=”no-line” custom_height=””]\nFrom 10:00 am – noon\, get skating tips and learn about the wild sport of roller derby from HARD (Hartford Area Roller Derby). Bring your skates!From noon – 2\, learn to skateboard with Push to Start Skate Program!From 2:00 – 4:00 pm\, meet Lady Carrie Trimmier-Mccrorey from the Connecticut American Double Dutch League — be ready to jump![divider line_type=”no-line” custom_height=””]\nTry your hand at a variety of other sports\, including kid-safe archery and lawn bowling\, and don’t forget to head inside the Museum to explore our special exhibition\, We’re Game! Sports and Community. This event is part of Free First Weekend\, which includes free admission to the Museum for all ages! This is a drop-in event; no tickets required.
