SUMMARY:Made to Last: The Art and Craft of Shoe Making
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, the Connecticut Museum is celebrating its 200th birthday! We’re excited to present a series of programs that will shine a light on some of our most treasured collection items. \nIn this program\, Connecticut shoemaker Andrew Rowand will utilize historic shoes from the Museum collection to showcase the living craft and tradition of shoemaking from the 18th century to the present day. You’ll have an opportunity to see several pairs of historic shoes from our collection up close! \nThis program was inspired by one of our earliest acquisitions: a pair of shoes belonging to Hannah Edwards of East Windsor\, made by Hannah and her sister Mary in about 1746\, probably for Hannah’s wedding. Each silk shoe was carefully embroidered with silk and metallic thread\, a proud testament to the skill of the Edwards sisters. The museum acquired the shoes in 1840\, at a time when most historical societies were only interested in collecting items related to prominent men. \nAbout Our Speaker: Andrew Rowand has worked as a shoemaker for a decade. His work focuses on recreating examples of historical artifacts from the 17th century through the 19th century using period tools\, materials\, and methods. He has currently undertaken researching and cataloguing shoes found in early New England structures as part of his work.  When he is not doing research or making shoes\, Andrew currently serves as the curator and site administrator of the Eric Sloane Museum in Kent\, CT. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn - Connecticut’s Local Leaders: Creating the State and Economy in the Early Republic
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nLocal leaders have long been studied as managers of daily affairs in their communities\, yet this presentation offers a narrative in which they attain national significance. In this virtual talk\, Elliot Warren illustrates how local magistrates in the 1780s and 1790s influenced the development of political economy—how the state interacts with markets—because of their role in overseeing local economies. As authorities acting in relative isolation from state and federal authorities\, local leaders had ample leeway to shape economic development in the early republic’s most valuable cities and towns. \nElliot’s talk will focus on how local leaders in Connecticut were integral to the development of an ‘American’ political economy. Through the lens of four distinct themes—security\, money\, representation\, and commerce—the talk will highlight the role Connecticut’s local leaders played on a grand scale. The 1780s and 1790s were times of great crisis\, from money scarcity to economic depression and the threat of invasion\, yet the state and federal governments were unable to face these challenges alone. Local leaders were essential participants in the defense of the nation from without and within. Working to protect and promote their communities\, leaders of Connecticut’s towns and cities contributed to the growth of a strong central state\, forever changing the way the American state interacts with the economy. \nElliot Warren\, a New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee\, conducted research at the Connecticut Museum in the fall of 2024. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be politically involved? What do political action and freedom of speech look like? In 1860\, during a time of deep political division and fears of a civil war\, five young men from Hartford\, Connecticut formed a campaign organization that became a nationwide movement and helped elect Abraham Lincoln. The attention-grabbing pageantry of the “Wide Awakes”—many of whom were too young to vote—provoked questions that remain relevant today. \nA new exhibit at the Connecticut Museum tells the story of the Wide Awakes\, featuring rare artifacts and documents from the Connecticut Museum collection. We invite you to join us on February 27 for a facilitated\, small-group dialogue followed by a question-and-answer style conversation with University of Connecticut faculty and community partners. The aim is to develop a forum for respectful and challenging dialogue. Groups will examine artifacts from the exhibition in detail\, using them as a window to contemplate the way Americans in the past thought about free speech\, democracy\, and political conflict. The program will spark conversation about how we can promote civic engagement in our own communities today. \nThe Encounters Series\, part of the Democracy and Dialogues Initiative (DDI) at UConn\, is working to increase democratic and civic capacity by supporting community dialogues on critical issues. DDI organizes audience-participation dialogues by which community members can dig deeply into complex topics through means of facilitated\, small-group conversations and engagement with content-area experts. \nThe program will begin at 6:00 pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm\, so please come early to browse the Museum galleries and share a light meal before the program begins! \nThis program is free and open to all members of the public. Each workshop includes a list of additional resources to encourage further at-home exploration of the workshop themes. \nA lunch break will take place from 11:45 am-12:30 pm. Bring a bagged lunch and enjoy meeting other homeschool families! Please note\, parents or guardians are expected to remain on Connecticut Museum premises for the duration of Homeschool Day. The auditorium lobby will be available for adults to use throughout the day. \nFamilies can also register their children under the age of 5 for Little Learners. Available throughout the day\, this loosely structured program features story times\, crafts\, and guided activities related to the day’s themes. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nIn 1777\, during the American Revolutionary War\, Jane McCrea was killed by Native allies of the British. She was quickly elevated by the Patriot press as an American martyr\, making her the most famous civilian casualty of the war. Yet examining the surrounding events in primary sources\, including those in the collection of Connecticut Museum of Culture and History\, reveals a complex history that stretched back long before\, to warfare among the Haudenosaunee\, Wabanaki\, British\, and French. \nJoin us for a virtual presentation in which Dr. Blake Grindon\, New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee\, will discuss her recent research findings. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Common Ground: Sacred Art Traditions in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Where do we find common ground? Cultural heritage art forms create and reflect meaning\, identity\, and community\, but we can become overly focused on cultural differences\, or else assume that there is a universal artistic language. But what if we can dig into—and challenge—both perspectives? In this new series\, we bring together traditional artists who practice art forms rooted in different cultural traditions to demonstrate their work\, share with one another\, and discuss their similarities and differences. Our first conversation will feature Tibetan thangka painter Yeshi Dorjee and Byzantine iconographer Marek Czarnecki\, as they discuss their sacred art traditions with one another and with audience members. Come with your questions to share. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but we recommend that you register to reserve a spot. \nAdditionally\, there will be some artwork available for purchase from the artists\, but sales are only possible via Zelle. \nQuestions?
