SUMMARY:Mental Health in the LGBTQ+ Community
DESCRIPTION:Members of the LGBTQ+ community are at higher risk for experiencing mental health conditions. In this panel discussion\, practitioners and community advocates will talk about the challenges that face this community in accessing mental health care\, including the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.   \nOur panelists include psychologist Dr. Richard Stillson\, psychologist Dr. Laura Saunders of Hartford Health Care\, and Edson Rivas\, director of the Triangle Community Center in Norwalk. The conversation will be moderated by Ilene Frank\, CMCH Chief Curator.   \nThis event is presented in support of the CMCH’s exhibition\, Common Struggle\, Individual Experience: An Exhibition About Mental Health. Come early to view the exhibition before the program! Doors open at 5:00 pm.  \nThis event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.  Please let us know if you plan to attend! \nAbout our Panelists  \nDr. Richard Stillson (ze\, zir\, they\, them) is a licensed psychologist who is in semi-retirement after 26 years working for the State of CT in a variety of inpatient\, outpatient and residential services for people with mental health\, substance use and intellectual/developmental disabilities. Ze is in private practice with transgender and gender variant individuals at Hartford Psychological Services providing a group intervention for the past 5 years. Ze is also the Clinical Director providing supervision to students and consultation to clinical staff. Ze has clinical expertise in CBT\, DBT\, co-occurring disorders\, ART\, trauma-informed care and sees people in all modalities of group\, couples\, family and individual. Ze is a non-binary\, gay human.  \nEdson Rivas (he\,him\, his) is the Executive Director of Triangle Community Center\, an LGBTQ+ center focused on providing programs and services centered around community\, health and learning. He took over as TCC’s ED in July of 2020 and comes from a finance background working with publicly traded companies. Edson has been involved with TCC since 2015\, joining the Board of Directors and rotating through various executive positions before becoming Board President in 2020. TCC’s clinical department works with LCSW and LMFT’s to provide care to our clients as well as supervision for MSW and MFT students that go through our internship program. \nLaura M. I. Saunders\, Psy.D. ABPP (she/her/hers) is a staff psychologist working in Young Adult Services at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital. Dr. Saunders is the Clinical Coordinator of The Right Track/LGBTQ Intensive Outpatient program in Young Adult Services for individuals struggling with co-occurring emotional difficulties\, minority stress and identity development. In 2015\, Dr. Saunders was named the Employee of the Year for Hartford Hospital. In 2019\, Dr. Saunders was the recipient of the Ned Graffagnino Award for distinguished service in the areas of community-oriented work and collaboration with other mental health professionals. She is the Director of the newly formed Center for Gender Health at Hartford Healthcare. Areas of expertise include LGBTQ mental health\, child psychopathology\, behavior management\, parent training and family therapy. She appears regularly in local TV news to provide psychological input on topics relevant to youth and families and currently has a weekly segment on WFSB/Ch. 3 Great Day CT related to child mental health.

DESCRIPTION:This summer we’re looking back at the Revolutionary War with our exhibition Hamilton Heroes and Villains\, in honor of the musical Hamilton’s return to the Bushnell. Beyond the flashy costumes and musical drama\, what was it really like to fight in the war? In this noontime talk\, historian Robert A. Selig takes a look at one of the darkest sides of any battle: the clean-up.  \nBattlefield clean-up is a topic rarely covered by modern historians\, yet following almost any military engagement\, there are corpses to dispose of. Who does that? Can we tell who buried whom? When? How many hours\, days\, months later? Where? Individually or in mass graves? In natural crevices? Lakes? Naked or dressed? Officers and other ranks together or separate? How long do they remain in the ground? Are they ever found? Who would dig them up and why? Can we identify them? SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Orquesta Afinke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for salsa from Bridgeport featuring Orquesta Afinke! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and Samba’s Cuisine food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel.\n\nAbout the Band\nBridgeport band Orquesta Afinke was founded as a way to entertain as well as educate about Latin American music and cultures. Afinque is Spanish slang\, meaning that the group playing together has tight rhythms—they have it together. The band was founded by trombonist Tito Planas and percussionist Samuel Diaz\, Jr.\, who both grew up in local Puerto Rican music traditions\, and are also committed music educators. All the band members are Puerto Rican musicians from Bridgeport\, and the group was founded in 2009 out of an opportunity to serve the local community. \n“If you listen to the music and rhythms\, it really talks about the island\, the history\,” says Diaz\, and this is what he and the other members of the band make clear. They perform to entertain as well as teach about the cultural roots of the music\, which includes salsa\, merengue\, plena\, bolero\, cumbia\, and Latin jazz\, as well as the cultural histories of the instruments they play. All the musicians are seasoned professionals\, and have played alongside famous salsa artists such as Frankie Negron\, Tony Vega\, Choco Orta\, Charlie Cruz\, Kevin Ceballo\, Raulin Rosendo\, and Los Hermanos Moreno. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee; the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Serenity Mental Art for Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Our current exhibition\, Common Struggle\, Individual Experience: An Exhibition on Mental Health includes several ways that Connecticans approach healing and support for mental health. Please join us as Artist Jampa Tsondue and Yeshi Dorjee\, a Buddhist monk and artist\, discuss Thangka art and meditation to promote healing. \nThangka are sacred Tibetan Buddhist artworks. Thangka art is more than just images\, it contains the information you need to relax your mind and find peace. In this talk\, Jampa will share with us how thangka artworks promote natural healing within each person. Yeshi will share with us steps to meditate upon the thangka to decrease mental and physical suffering and increase healing. \nThis presentation is virtual and free. Click here to register. Email Jennifer Busa at jennifer_busa@chs.org. \nAbout the Speakers \nJampa Tsondue was born in India to Tibetan refugee parents. He began his art studies at age 13. He became an apprentice to this famous painter at the Gyudmed Tantric University. He trained in the Buddhist holy tradition of thangka painting for 20 years. Jampa has painted many thangka for different monasteries with his mentor. Their most important project took four painters nearly four years to complete – recreating forty-one thangkas in the Dalai Lama’s collection\, each 4 feet by 3 feet\, depicting the past lives of the Buddha. \nJampa moved to Connecticut in 1992. Today\, he continues to paint and teach apprentice artists. As is his tradition\, every morning he prays and meditates to reflect on compassion\, loving kindness\, and tolerance. \nYeshi Dorjee was born in Bhutan after his mother escaped from Tibet. As a child he entered into Gyueme Monastic University in India to study art and philosophy until he was 36. He moved to California and taught art and meditation at the University of California Santa Barbara and at other centers. He presented at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2000. Yeshi is a master of Tibetan thangka painting as well as butter sculpture. \nIn 2019\, Yeshi moved to Connecticut. He provides spiritual guidance to the growing Buddhist community in Old Saybrook and Norwich. Yeshi knows\, presents\, and has written down many traditional narratives of the Tibetan people as well as Buddhist allegories and lesson stories. as well. \nImage: Mental Replacement\, First Step of Meditation\, 2001. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel. \nAbout the Band \nHartford Steel Symphony was founded in 1989 in Hartford and has become the area’s premier steel band. Kelvin Griffith\, the band’s director\, is well-known in Trinidad as a panist\, or steel drum player. Griffith is also a maker of steel drums\, and all the steel drums in the band are made by him. The steel pans reflect other instrument names based on the kind of sound they make—like cello\, bass\, guitar\, and tenor pan. \nHartford Steel plays a wide variety of musical genres specific to the West Indies\, including soca\, calypso\, and reggae\, and also can play pop\, classical\, gospel\, and jazz\, all arranged to reflect the rhythms of the islands. The band’s members have competed in years of steel band competitions—part of the culture of steel band performance in the Caribbean—and can always be found at the annual Taste of the Caribbean festival\, and at the West Indian Independence Celebration and Parade in Hartford\, as well as West Indian independence celebrations around New England. Hartford Steel Symphony has also played with The Hartford Symphony Orchestra and celebrities like Bernadette Peters and Len “Boogsie” Sharp\, one of the steel drums’ greatest panists. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. SUMMARY:Negra\, negra\, negra soy
DESCRIPTION:Come witness as Black women share their words\, stories\, and creative talents to show the diversity of Blackness. Negra\, negra\, negra soy (“Black\, Black\, I am a Black woman”) is a community performance created by the afrofeminist arts collective\, Kukily\, that creates interdisciplinary work in performance\, installation\, audiovisual and community-based projects. The US premiere of this project (first conducted in Argentina) is being directed by Connecticut artist and co-founder of Kukily\, Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald. \nColleen shares\, “The creative process of ‘Negra\, negra\, negra soy’ creates space for participants to get to know each other\, for the audience to get to know them\, and for bridges to be constructed between individuals and communities. I also think this project is very important now because people of African descent have been disproportionately affected by the ongoing pandemic. Creating art together is healing\, especially art that uplifts the voices of Black women and folks of diverse gender expressions.” \nKukily emphasizes choosing performer-collaborators of different ages\, nationalities\, ethnic backgrounds\, skin tones\, languages\, hair textures\, professions\, religions\, generating essential conversations around who we are and how we create networks of solidarity within our communities. \nThe event will take place on August 20th at Kamora’s Cultural Corner at 75 Sterling St.\, Hartford\, CT. The event will include the Black Art Heals Bazaar with local vendors starting at 4pm\, and the performance will begin by 5pm. The CMCH is proud to be a fiscal sponsor for this event. SUMMARY:The Future of Kids' Mental Health: What Caregivers Need to Know!
DESCRIPTION:Children’s mental health is on everyone’s mind. Access to services continues to be a barrier for families. This year\, the Connecticut General Assembly passed three bills aimed at improving children’s access to mental health services. What does this mean for you? The CMCH invites parents and caregivers to attend an online\, free information session about kids’ mental health. An expert panel will help parents and caregivers gain a better understanding of the range of emotional and mental health issues facing all of our children with a special emphasis on under-served populations. This presentation will outline what is in the new legislation and how it will affect services offered at schools\, hospitals\, community-based programs and in your pediatrician’s office. Families\, educators\, and health practitioners are encouraged to attend what we will be an informative and interactive evening. \nThis event is free and open to the public!
