SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Black Revolution on the Sea Islands
DESCRIPTION:This virtual Lunch and Learn presentation by Frances O’Shaughnessy draws on military letters\, treasury reports\, and personal letters from the denoted “Port Royal Experiment\,”  including a letter from the CMCH collection\, to historicize Gullah Geechee people’s expressions of freedom during the Civil War\, what Frances calls a Black Revolution for Freedom. \nNew England Regional Fellowship Consortium (NERFC) Fellow Frances O’Shaughnessy will draw on Gullah Geechee music and sermons\, in particular\, to demonstrate an alternative narrative to the Civil War\, one that does not subsume Black practices of freedom under the U. S. Military\, but rather considers their world-making practices on the plantation\, even when their worlds proved provisional. They consider how the Black Revolution travelled across the Sea Islands\, with planters fleeing plantations as smoke from cotton fires filled the air. \nFrances narrates Gullah Geechee peoples’ destruction of planter property\, within themselves and within the land\, as the destruction of property itself – as an idea\, as a thing\, and as an essence – an anti-proprietary freedom\, whose vision encouraged Black women to rip cotton from the soil and replace it with the seeds of potatoes\, peas\, squash\, and corn. Frances creates a material history\, drawn from the aesthetics and spirituals of Gullah Geechee life\, to critically engage with alternative humanities present in the past\, precisely because they permit us to imagine other possibilities to live and be together. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.  Click here to register through Yapsody. You’ll get a confirmation email and the Zoom link will be in the attached ticket. Lange is an assistant professor of history at the Wentworth Institute of Technology. She received her PhD in history from Brandeis University. Her book\, Picturing Political Power: Images and the Fight for Women’s Votes in the United States\, (University of Chicago Press\, 2020)\, traces the ways that woman’s rights activists and their opponents used images to define gender and power during the US woman suffrage movement. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn:  Connecticut Political Figures and the Chinese Exclusion Act
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual presentation by Judge Henry Cohn as he discusses his research on the opposition to the Chinese Exclusion Acts by two Connecticut Senators and one Massachusetts Senator. \nCongress passed statutes in the late 1880’s that discriminated against Chinese immigrants. The two sitting U.S. Senators from Connecticut\, Joseph Roswell Hawley and Orville Hitchcock Platt\, and Massachusetts Senator George Frisbie Hoar\, closely tied to Connecticut\, unsuccessfully opposed passage of these statutes. The Senators’ opposition\, while an initial failure in the U.S. Senate\, formed the basis for the repeal of these statutes in 1943. \nThese Senators formed friendships with the adults and met the students from the Chinese Educational Mission\, a cultural and educational exchange program headquartered in Hartford. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:U.S. naval officer Donald Storey was not just fighting for his country in World War II—he was fighting to come home to his love\, Margery. The letters the couple wrote to each other became their lifeline\, providing comfort in a time of constant uncertainty. In Lisa Franco’s book\, My Dearest Darling: Letters of Love in Wartime\, Donald’s and Margery’s intimate correspondence not only offers a heartwarming account of their romance and personal sacrifices\, but also shines a light on historical events as they unfolded overseas and at home. In this virtual presentation\, Lisa will discuss her discovery of the letters and her research for the book. \nFranco stumbled upon the lost letters during a fateful stop at a Cape Cod antique shop. What started as a curiosity became\, with each subsequent letter\, an obsession with finding the couple’s family\, learning their history\, and ultimately\, discovering what happened to them after the war. She also served as public affairs director for the station before she became the state communications director for one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the country. While Lisa’s background includes marketing\, media relations\, and public relations\, these days she is a freelance writer and owner of Over the Moon Vintage\, an online collectibles shop. Lisa’s parents were members of the Greatest Generation\, and her father\, Nino Maurizi\, was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. She attributes this to her interest in the war and the loving relationships that developed during that period in our history. Lisa and her husband\, Joe\, live in Connecticut and Cape Cod and are the proud parents of their sixth rescue dog\, Maggie.

SUMMARY:Stepping Forth Into the World: The Story of the Xu Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Our exhibition\, Journeys\, tells the story of the students who participated in the Chinese Educational Mission (CEM). In this program\, Henry Qu\, who contributed his research and translation skills to the exhibition\, will tell the story of three students\, the remarkable Xu brothers. Qu will place the brothers’ story into the larger context of world history and reveal how the brothers’ lives became part of a complicated tangle of international exchange. \nAfter the First Opium War (1840-1842)\, Britain and other countries forced the Qing court to open to foreign trade through international treaties. Collaborating with Chinese merchants\, foreign traders ventured deeply into Inland China\, created enormous wealth\, and brought drastic changes to the life of millions. The Xu family is among these merchants. As the first group of Chinese who started to re-examine the world in the late 19th century\, their family members left footprints in China\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States. Three of the Xu boys came to the United States with CEM\, spending some of their teenage years studying and living abroad. Some of their home letters are still preserved by CMCH\, shedding light on the family’s story and history. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: The Neurocolorline -- Locating Black Autism and Black Neurodivergence in the Archives
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a virtual discussion by Dr. Diana Paulin. The title of Dr. Diana Paulin’s talk borrows from W.E.B.’s 1903 scholarly study in which he contends that “the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line- the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia and Africa\, in America and the islands of the sea” (The Souls of Black Folk). This powerful image of a racialized line that separates communities and nations still resonates in the Twenty-first century. However\, the colorline is shaped by other factors\, such as class and religion. \nIn this virtual lunchtime talk\, Dr. Paulin will talk about how the history of anti-black racism and ableism in the U.S. erases both the past and contemporary experiences of Black neurodivergence. In fact\, much of the archival work is detective work\, reading between the lines\, searching in unlikely collections\, and identifying gaps in historical\, medical\, and cultural narratives because of the historical devaluation of Black well-being and humanity during enslavement and beyond. In the process of locating historic and contemporary instances of Black neurodivergence\, Dr. Paulin contributes to the efforts to learn from\, better understand\, and include the contributions\, survival strategies\, challenges experienced not only by Black people but also by all neurodivergent people in our neurodiverse past and present world. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:What are you planting this year in your garden? Would you like seeds of different varieties and to hear from the people who plant them? \nFood is a love language in many Asian American households. In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, we are honoring this deep-rooted connection by centering the voices of aunts and grandmothers on what they cultivate and how it connects them to their past. Join us for this conversation and leave inspired with seeds\, recipes\, and experiences. Please bring seeds to share and swap. \nOur Featured Panelists \nVicheth Im\, a refugee from Cambodia\, has been an organic farmer for ten years. After losing access to land\, the idea of working with it never left her heart. Now\, she is planning to homestead with her newly retired parents\, as well as her siblings\, niece\, and nephew. \nHien Thi Nguyen was born and raised in Vietnam. She has resided in the U.S. for 39 years\, where she and her husband raised three children to adulthood—all of whom speak Vietnamese. She enjoys karaoke\, gardening\, and camping. \nMao Lo Yang was born in Xieng Khouang\, Laos\, and resettled to to the U.S. in 1978 after the Hmong were persecuted for their role in supporting the U.S. military during the Secret War. Mao Lo Yang is married to Yeng Yang and has 7 adult children. She enjoys gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren. \nChristine Kim is a food and social justice activist focused on community-based solutions\, with a prior career in data-driven international environmental policy. She is currently the Board Chair of CitySeed\, a New Haven-based nonprofit aimed at an equitable\, local food system\, and a member of the Connecticut Department of Agriculture’s Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Working Group. Christine lives in New Haven with her husband Doug Kysar and two young children. \nThis panel will be moderated by Catherine Shen\, host of Where We Live at Connecticut Public. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
