Connecticut is the birthplace of comic books\, copyright law\, Noah Webster\, and the recipe for pumpkin pie. It printed the first fugitive slave narrative\, sold millions of dollars of books by subscription\, and inspired children’s sections in libraries nationwide. From the 1700s to today\, Connecticut has been compiling its bookshelf\, one sermon\, ledger\, map\, schoolbook\, law\, psalm\, newspaper\, and book at a time. Connecticut’s Bookshelf explores how these documents were made\, shared\, and received\, and asks you to consider: What belongs on the shelf? DESCRIPTION:Hartford Public Library (HPL) is partnering with the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History to offer an evening of FREE admission to the Museum for all Hartford residents. With an HPL library card or proof of Hartford address\, visitors are invited to browse the museum and take part in guided tours of the Connecticut’s Bookshelf exhibit. \nStaff from the Library will be on hand to help you learn more about HPL\, get a library card\, and get to know HPL’s Hartford History Center. Enjoy two opportunities for a guided tour of our Connecticut’s Bookshelf exhibition\, which explores Connecticut’s literary evolution from the 1700s to today. You can also attend a screening of the short film Thoughts Are Things\, an inspirational story about the power of books\, followed by a Q&A with the director\, Christopher T. Brown. Light refreshments will be provided. \nFree admission is available starting at 4:00 pm\, and guided tours of the exhibit will be offered at 5:15 pm and 7:00 pm (or you can browse the exhibition on your own anytime). SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn - “Anomalous Characters”: The Children of the Loyalists
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nDuring the American Revolution\, wartime loyalties and civilian violence prompted tens of thousands of former colonists to abandon their homes and relocate as refugees to other parts of the British Empire. To cite one\, contemporary refrain\, “The Tories with their brats and wives/Have fled to save their wretched lives.” As the guns quieted and the smoke cleared\, the bitter complaints of the unhappy absentees prolonged the settlement of revolutionary disputes for decades to come. \nWhat would become of the loyalists? Contradictory judicial rulings between Britain and the United States in the aftermath of independence meant adolescent participants in the loyalist exodus retained legal rights to membership within both polities. It was an accident of unsettled disagreements\, and an uneasy affront to the long-standing political ideologies which presumed total allegiance to a single national character\, and no others. Federal directions were slow to respond. Private citizens more often determined what was possible. \nIn this virtual presentation\, Shea Hendry\, a New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee\, will discuss this complex period and explore how individuals like William Birdseye Peters and Prudence Punderson\, both children of prominent Connecticut loyalists\, help to reveal the boundaries of the new national divide and its surprising pliancy among the many people who did not yet feel different. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Samson Occom: Indigenous Sovereignty in Revolutionary Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:In an age of political upheaval\, Samson Occom (1723-1792) helped chart a new course for the Native communities of the Northeast. Occom grew up a Mohegan immersed in his people’s traditional lifeways\, and worked to reinvent those lifeways in a world transformed by colonialism. Occom rose to international fame advocating for Mohegan interests\, and eventually helped found a new Indigenous nation called Brothertown\, which (like Mohegan) continues to thrive today. Occom was inspired by the American religion but believed Native peoples had to forge their own paths toward freedom: “Indians\,” he said\, “are neither Whigs nor Tories.” Discover his compelling story and social impact with author Ryan Carr. \nAbout Our Speaker: Ryan Carr is a lecturer in English\, American Studies\, and the Core Curriculum at Columbia University. He has published widely in the fields of American literature and religious studies.
