SUMMARY:The Elegance and Style of Chinese Classical Dance: Introduction to Liyuan Dance with Kaili Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive dance workshop exploring the elegance and enduring style of Chinese Classical Dance\, taught by choreographer Kaili Chen\, founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company and a current SNEAP Mentor. \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn fundamental elements of Chinese classical dance\, including expressive hand gestures\, focused eye work and facial expression\, refined walking patterns\, and short movement combinations that highlight rhythm and flow. The session also introduces the historical background and distinctive aesthetics of Liyuan Dance\, a classical form rooted in Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) court traditions. \nParticipants will also explore creativity through traditional face painting\, designing their own classical-inspired makeup details such as the mei xin (forehead ornament) and dimples. The workshop includes hands-on experience wearing Han-style costumes and using flowing silk scarves (pibo) to embody grace and everyday etiquette. \nBlending movement\, history\, fashion\, and self-expression\, this workshop invites participants to experience Chinese classical dance as both an art form and a way of life. \nWorkshop choreography is geared towards female participants ages 8 and up. Please wear a fitted top and pants. Light-colored socks required. \nArtist Bio: \nKaili Chen is the founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company\, a nonprofit organization established in 2017 in Stamford\, Connecticut. Dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional Chinese culture. \nOriginally from Taiwan\, she was a principal dancer and rehearsal director with the renowned Han-Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble in Taipei for over 30 years and trained extensively in Liyuan Classical Dance\, a court dance tradition originating in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE)\, and studied martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. He has worked on the project since 2010 and was a senior member of the team that conceived\, planned\, and implemented the inaugural education and interpretive programming for the institution. Previously\, Rauch managed grants for the Center for Informal Learning and Schools at the Exploratorium in San Francisco\, and worked in the education departments at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. SUMMARY:River Gods & Sturdy Yeomen: Connecticut Clothing in the Age of Revolution  1760-1790
DESCRIPTION:During the years prior to the Industrial Revolution\, clothing was considered as necessary protection to the wearer\, a store of value\, and an outward expression of socioeconomic status. Today these garments provide us with an invaluable window into the material culture of past times \nUsing examples of men’s clothing from the Connecticut Museum of History and Culture and other collections in the state\, Henry Cooke will examine the interrelationship of fashion\, commerce\, politics\, and technology that were responsible for creating these garments and how they help us to better understand the lives of Connecticut’s early citizens. \nThe Connecticut Museum of History and Culture’s collection of men’s and women’s clothing is unique in the number\, variety and quality items from the mid to late 18th century. Many of the garments are identified to their original wearers\, who range from ordinary citizens to the colonial elite. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nOliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was the nation’s second Treasury Secretary and a key figure on the national stage during the Federalist administrations of Presidents George Washington and John Adams.  Upon his resignation from the federal government in 1800\, Wolcott prospered for many years as a private citizen\, and was later elected Governor of Connecticut\, serving for ten years. \nIn this virtual presentation\, Dr. John Lizzi will examine Wolcott’s contributions to both national and state government during his nearly forty years of public service\, as well as discuss to what extent Wolcott evolved politically during his long career. Wolcott’s success can be attributed to his steadfast commitment to his principles including personal integrity\, nationalism\, the need for a strong national government\, and the promotion of manufacturing and industry. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. The latter part of the century saw the rise of African American minstrels touring along Vaudeville circuits into New England. How influential was minstrelsy to entertainment in New England? Were African American minstrels a part of this influence? \nThis virtual talk by New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee\, KT Turner\, will explore minstrelsy and other forms of entertainment in Connecticut and parts of New England to gain more insight on the cultural underpinnings of American Reconstruction. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.
