Using objects from history as a guide\, this talk examines some of the ways disability has collided with assumptions about how to be human. \nOur guest speaker is Katherine Ott\, Curator of Medicine and Science at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Ott specializes in topics including the history of the body\, disability\, ethnic and folk medicine\, integrative and alternative medicine\, ophthalmology\, plastic surgery and dermatology\, medical technology\, prosthetics and rehabilitation\, and gender and sexuality. DESCRIPTION:How did the women of CT work for – or against – the right to vote? In this behind-the-scenes program\, we’ll look at photos\, letters and pamphlets from our collection to understand one of the most hard-fought political battles of American history. You’ll learn about suffragists like Katharine Houghton Hepburn\, Mary Townsend Seymour\, and Isabella Beecher Hooker\, as well as some CT women who fought tooth-and-nail against women getting the vote (what was up with them?). \n$10 for CMCH members\, $15 for non-members. Ticket includes admission to the museum’s galleries. SUMMARY:Family Program: Movie Under the ‘Stars’
DESCRIPTION:Curl up under the “stars” for a movie night at the CMCH! Enjoy a special showing of the movie Inside Out while snacking on free popcorn! Families are encouraged to bring pillows and blankets and wear their comfiest footy pajamas. Quiet toys and activities to enjoy during the movie will also be available. \nExhibits will be open from 5:00 – 6:00 pm; the movie will begin at 6:00 pm. The fee is $5 per family. This program is great for children under the age of 12. Pre-registration is available\, but walk-ins are welcome! To pre-register\, click here. You’ll learn about a Harlem Renaissance writer\, Ann Petry\, who carefully preserved artifacts chronicling the black community of Saybrook. Examine daguerreotypes by Augustus Washington\, who abandoned a successful Hartford photography business to build a new nation in Africa. Browse through the photo album of a Hollywood actress who became a champion of labor rights for black entertainers. Marvel at the gorgeous costumes created by CT’s West Indian community for their annual MAS celebration\, and see artifacts documenting the Civil Rights movement in our state. \nThis program is free. Register here.
