SUMMARY:Disasters in Connecticut: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Floods and earthquakes\, wars and famines\, engineering failures and economic collapses — these frightening events seem to define modern life. We call them “disasters.” But what makes a disaster different from other periods of time? In a freewheeling conversation\, two leading scholars in the field of disaster studies will consider events in Connecticut history and beyond\, thinking out loud together about why some kinds of bad news are considered disasters while others are not\, and what difference it makes. \nLight refreshments will be served\, and River Bend Bookshop will be on hand to sell copies of the speakers’ work. \nAndy Horowitz is the Connecticut State Historian and an Associate Professor of History at UConn. He is the author of Katrina: A History\, 1915–2015 (Harvard University Press\, 2020)\, which won the Bancroft Prize in American history. Jacob A. C. Remes is a clinical associate professor of history at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study\, where he directs the Initiative for Critical Disaster Studies. He is the author of Disaster Citizenship: Survivors\, Solidarity\, and Power in the Progressive Era (University of Illinois Press\, 2016). Together\, Remes and Horowitz edited Critical Disaster Studies (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2021). \nQuestions? Join us for an introductory level workshop with local stained glass and restoration artist Francis Barkyoumb of Glass Dance Studio. Francis will guide you through the step-by-step process of stained-glass. The workshop will provide you with a pre-cut glass pattern that you will learn to foil and solder. By the end of the class\, you will have completed your own stained-glass piece to take home! \nFrancis Barkyoumb has been a stained-glass artist since 2009 and began teaching the art form in 2012. In 2022\, Francis opened Glass Dance Studio in Branford\, Connecticut\, where he creates custom pieces of art\, restores panels and heirlooms\, and offers classes. \nThis workshop will be structured for the beginner\, but all levels of expertise are encouraged to register!
