He has worked on the project since 2010 and was a senior member of the team that conceived\, planned\, and implemented the inaugural education and interpretive programming for the institution. Previously\, Rauch managed grants for the Center for Informal Learning and Schools at the Exploratorium in San Francisco\, and worked in the education departments at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. SUMMARY:River Gods & Sturdy Yeomen: Connecticut Clothing in the Age of Revolution  1760-1790
DESCRIPTION:During the years prior to the Industrial Revolution\, clothing was considered as necessary protection to the wearer\, a store of value\, and an outward expression of socioeconomic status. Today these garments provide us with an invaluable window into the material culture of past times \nUsing examples of men’s clothing from the Connecticut Museum of History and Culture and other collections in the state\, Henry Cooke will examine the interrelationship of fashion\, commerce\, politics\, and technology that were responsible for creating these garments and how they help us to better understand the lives of Connecticut’s early citizens. \nThe Connecticut Museum of History and Culture’s collection of men’s and women’s clothing is unique in the number\, variety and quality items from the mid to late 18th century. Many of the garments are identified to their original wearers\, who range from ordinary citizens to the colonial elite. Their lives would intersect and collide during the Revolutionary era\, as Connecticut’s citizens struggled with the economic\, social and military costs that also found their outward expression in their clothing\, which was preserved as a reminder of that struggle. \nThis program is part of the Museum’s “Made to Last” series\, which pairs items from our collection with modern day artisans who discuss change and tradition in their field of expertise. \nThis program is free\, but spaces are limited\, so please reserve your spot now. \nGET TICKETS\nThis program is generously supported by the Auerbach Schiro Foundation. \nFor information on how to request specific accommodations\, including ASL interpretation\, please visit our Accessibility at the Museum page.

The program will include live readings from Grandmother Moon and an exploration of traditional stories referenced in the book\, offering visitors of all ages the chance to reflect on the power of intergenerational storytelling. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nOliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was the nation’s second Treasury Secretary and a key figure on the national stage during the Federalist administrations of Presidents George Washington and John Adams.  Upon his resignation from the federal government in 1800\, Wolcott prospered for many years as a private citizen\, and was later elected Governor of Connecticut\, serving for ten years. \nIn this virtual presentation\, Dr. John Lizzi will examine Wolcott’s contributions to both national and state government during his nearly forty years of public service\, as well as discuss to what extent Wolcott evolved politically during his long career. Wolcott’s success can be attributed to his steadfast commitment to his principles including personal integrity\, nationalism\, the need for a strong national government\, and the promotion of manufacturing and industry. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by a leading scholar of early America about the legacy of the Declaration of Independence. \nIn this talk\, historian Michael D. Hattem asks: why have Americans developed such an emotional connection to the nation’s founding for nearly 250 years? He will discuss the importance of how generations of Americans have told the story of the Revolution\, how politics have shaped how the Revolution has been remembered\, and how Americans have fought over the meanings and legacy of the Revolution for nearly 250 years. SUMMARY:Newcomers to Nutmeggers: Jewish History in Greater Hartford
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 19 for a panel discussion about how and why thousands of Jewish immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe made the North End of Hartford their home in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What were the push and pull factors that drew Jewish people away from Europe and to Connecticut\, and specifically\, the capital city? How did they build thriving communities? What impact did they have on the neighborhood\, the city\, and the state as a whole? \nVisitors can come early to view our current exhibition\, Drawn Here: Stories from Hartford’s North End\, which features stories about pioneering Jewish North End residents like Dr. Fanny Karp Radom\, a founder of Mt. Sinai Hospital\, and Moshe Paranov\, a founder of Hartt School of Music. \nOur panelists are: Amy Weiss\, Director of the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford; Mary Donohue\, West Hartford Town Historian\, and Jennifer Klau\, Executive Director of The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn - Diverging Paths from Lebanon\, Connecticut: Native Americans and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation! \nFrom 1754 to 1770 Native Americans from across the Northeast travelled to Lebanon\, Connecticut as students in Moor’s Indian Charity School. This diverse cohort of Native youths would go on to play pivotal roles in the American Revolution\, and their experiences in Connecticut gave them connections and information that would inform their decision making and shape their perceptions of the war. These students would take on many attitudes towards the war\, with some siding with Britain and others with the United States\, while others remained vocally neutral.  \nPlease join us for a virtual presentation by Yusuf Mansoor as he explores written material from the Connecticut Museum’s American Revolution collection.  Yusuf spent time at the Museum this past summer as the Project Scholar for the Connecticut Museum’s American Revolution Papers Digitization Project.  This 3-year project is funded by a federal earmark awarded in 2023.   \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. Servodidio! \nAbout the Speaker:  Yusuf Mansoor is a PhD candidate at University of Connecticut and Project Scholar for the American Revolution Papers Digitization Project for Summer 2026. His research focuses on the importance of slavery in shaping Native American perceptions of the Atlantic World in the seventeenth century. He reads against archival grains to tell the histories of underrepresented people and communities. Originally from Connecticut\, Mansoor received his BA from George Washington University in 2018 and his MA from William and Mary in 2020. His work has been supported by the Omohundro Institute for Early American History and Culture\, the Massachusetts Historical Society\, the Society of Colonial Wars\, and the American Philosophical Society.
