DESCRIPTION:Join us in learning the basics of linocut printmaking! In this workshop\, led by folk artist Philitha Stemplys-Cowdrey\, you will be guided through the whole “block print” process: from designing a pattern\, transferring\, carving\, testing and printing your design to take home. No printmaking experience required\, and people of all artistic abilities are welcome. Even if you think you can’t draw\, you can print! SUMMARY:The Hartford Circus Fire Remembered
DESCRIPTION:A note to patrons: The elevator that provides access to our gallery spaces and accessible bathroom is out of order. This program will be held in our ground-floor Auditorium and is fully accessible\, with no stairs required for entry. There is also a set of bathrooms on the ground level that are fully accessible\, again with no stairs required. However\, visitors who cannot climb stairs will not have access to the museum galleries\, or to the wheelchair-accessible bathroom.  \nEighty years ago\, the worst disaster in Hartford history took the lives of 168 people. The circus fire has lived in the memories of survivors and the imaginations of Connecticans ever since. On June 6th\, the Connecticut Museum welcomes Don Massey and former Hartford Fire Chief Charles A. Teale to talk about the lasting legacy of the fire. Don Massey is coauthor of A Matter of Degree: The Hartford Circus Fire and the Mystery of Little Miss 1565\, documenting arson investigator Rick Davey’s identification of one of the fire’s unclaimed victims as Eleanor Emily Cook. Chief Charles Teale co-chaired the Hartford Circus Fire Memorial Foundation\, which created a memorial to the victims on the site of the fire on Barbour Street. The conversation will be moderated by the Connecticut Museum’s Deputy Executive Director\, Ilene Frank. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThis is the second event in our 2024 Woodward Lecture Series\, in which we examine the impact and legacy of disasters\, both natural and man-made\, in our state’s history. Save the date for our last presentation in the series\, an examination of 2017’s Hurricane Maria\, which devastated Puerto Rico and sent thousands of survivors to seek refuge in Connecticut. \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nAmy Godine’s new book\, The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier (Cornell\, Fall 2023)\, tells the story of a rich abolitionist’s bid to colonize the Adirondack wilderness in 1846 by donating 120\,000 acres to 3\,000 impoverished Black New Yorkers before the Civil War. Gerrit Smith’s land gifts aimed to ease Black access to the ballot in an age when landless Black New Yorkers were disenfranchised. Frederick Douglass and New York’s leading Black reformers promoted Smith’s proposal with zeal. \nWhat does this story have to do with Connecticut? \nJoin us for this virtual presentation\, as Amy Godine traces this Adirondack story back to two key players that have Connecticut roots: Lyman Eppes and John Brown. The militant abolitionist\, John Brown\, born in Torrington\, Connecticut\, was an advocate of Smith’s plan and moved his family to Timbuctoo\, a new Black enclave in the Adirondack woods in 1849. \nAmy Godine will also introduce us to one of Smith’s grantees\, Lyman Eppes\, who was born in Colchester\, Connecticut. Eppes migrated to the Adirondacks with his family in 1849 and became Brown’s close friend and confidante. In his new home\, North Elba\, Eppes co-founded two churches\, a singing school\, and his town’s first library. The Eppes family’s tenure in the region spanned almost a century. \nQuestions?
