SUMMARY:The Elegance and Style of Chinese Classical Dance: Introduction to Liyuan Dance with Kaili Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive dance workshop exploring the elegance and enduring style of Chinese Classical Dance\, taught by choreographer Kaili Chen\, founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company and a current SNEAP Mentor. \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn fundamental elements of Chinese classical dance\, including expressive hand gestures\, focused eye work and facial expression\, refined walking patterns\, and short movement combinations that highlight rhythm and flow. The session also introduces the historical background and distinctive aesthetics of Liyuan Dance\, a classical form rooted in Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) court traditions. \nParticipants will also explore creativity through traditional face painting\, designing their own classical-inspired makeup details such as the mei xin (forehead ornament) and dimples. The workshop includes hands-on experience wearing Han-style costumes and using flowing silk scarves (pibo) to embody grace and everyday etiquette. \nBlending movement\, history\, fashion\, and self-expression\, this workshop invites participants to experience Chinese classical dance as both an art form and a way of life. \nWorkshop choreography is geared towards female participants ages 8 and up. Please wear a fitted top and pants. Light-colored socks required. \nArtist Bio: \nKaili Chen is the founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company\, a nonprofit organization established in 2017 in Stamford\, Connecticut. Dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional Chinese culture. \nOriginally from Taiwan\, she was a principal dancer and rehearsal director with the renowned Han-Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble in Taipei for over 30 years and trained extensively in Liyuan Classical Dance\, a court dance tradition originating in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE)\, and studied martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. He has worked on the project since 2010 and was a senior member of the team that conceived\, planned\, and implemented the inaugural education and interpretive programming for the institution. Previously\, Rauch managed grants for the Center for Informal Learning and Schools at the Exploratorium in San Francisco\, and worked in the education departments at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nOliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was the nation’s second Treasury Secretary and a key figure on the national stage during the Federalist administrations of Presidents George Washington and John Adams.  Upon his resignation from the federal government in 1800\, Wolcott prospered for many years as a private citizen\, and was later elected Governor of Connecticut\, serving for ten years. \nIn this virtual presentation\, Dr. John Lizzi will examine Wolcott’s contributions to both national and state government during his nearly forty years of public service\, as well as discuss to what extent Wolcott evolved politically during his long career. Wolcott’s success can be attributed to his steadfast commitment to his principles including personal integrity\, nationalism\, the need for a strong national government\, and the promotion of manufacturing and industry. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. We give our time\, our trust\, our love\, our forgiveness\, and sometimes more of ourselves than we ever intended. On December 5\, Speak Up presents “The Things We Give” — an evening of true stories about unexpected generosity\, difficult sacrifices\, gifts with strings attached\, and the things we gave away only to discover how much they meant.
