SUMMARY:A Paramedic’s Dispatches From the Front Line of the Opioid Epidemic
DESCRIPTION:*Update: 1/3/2022: As we see an increase in Covid-19 cases across our state and beyond\, the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History will temporarily close to the public from Tuesday\, January 4 through Saturday\, January 15. We currently anticipate reopening the museum to the public on Tuesday\, January 18. All on-site public programs and tours are canceled during this time. \nThis event will now be online and begin at 7pm \n  \nJoin us for a book talk with Hartford paramedic Peter Canning\, author of Killing Season: A Paramedic’s Dispatches From the Front Line of the Opioid Epidemic. \nIn April 2021\, Canning released Killing Season: A Paramedic’s Dispatches From the Front Line of the Opioid Epidemic. A paramedic on the streets of Hartford for over 25 years\, Canning has seen the impact of prescription painkillers\, heroin\, and the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl firsthand. He tells how he once believed drug users were victims only of their own character flaws\, but once he began asking his patients how they had gotten started on their perilous journeys\, their heart-rending stories changed Canning’s view. Now armed with an understanding of the science of addiction\, he fights against the stigmatization of users and now supports harm reduction\, which advocates for needle exchange\, community naloxone\, and safe-injection sites\, and argues for a stronger public heath response to the epidemic that claims over 100\,000 American lives a year\, including 1\,400 in Connecticut. \n$6 per household. This talk will offer an exploration of the varied ways readers\, doctors\, and librarians have imagined books as medicine in the past. Focusing on case studies from 1800 to the present\, we’ll explore some of the earliest imaginings of books on a shelf as vials of medicine that could treat all manner of ills. This talk will explore some of the earliest literary prescriptions at nineteenth-century asylums\, question what books made the best medicine in the trenches of World War I\, and beyond. Readers who prescribe themselves literary cures will learn they are not alone in the practice\, and are in fact part of a larger story about the contested uses of reading. \nThis virtual program is free. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever turned to a book for consolation? Treasured the escape of a novel? Found comfort in a poem\, self-help book\, or simply from reading the newspaper? \nPlease join us for a virtual presentation by Historian Mary Mahoney on bibliotherapy\, or the use of books as medicine. This talk will offer an exploration of the varied ways readers\, doctors\, and librarians have imagined books as medicine in the past. Focusing on case studies from 1800 to the present\, we’ll explore some of the earliest imaginings of books on a shelf as vials of medicine that could treat all manner of ills. This talk will explore some of the earliest literary prescriptions at nineteenth-century asylums\, question what books made the best medicine in the trenches of World War I\, and beyond. Readers who prescribe themselves literary cures will learn they are not alone in the practice\, and are in fact part of a larger story about the contested uses of reading. \nThis virtual program is free.
