DESCRIPTION:All things will one day break. In early America\, this rule also held true\, as material items regularly and repeatedly broke\, and required repair work for continued use and preservation. Textiles—perhaps the most ubiquitous\, valuable\, and fragile materials in early America—are no exception. But what can a darned stocking\, a patched pair of breeches\, or a mended foresail tell us about early America\, and why are textile repair practices worthy of notice? \nIn this virtual presentation\, New England Regional Fellowship Consortium (NERFC) Fellow Emily Whitted will utilize examples from her research in the museum and archival collections at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History to investigate the history of textile repair in early America. By locating textile repair inside early American homes and workshops\, on the decks of ships\, and inside military camps\, she will explore mending as both a labor practice and a historical model for caring deeply\, whether through economic necessity or sentiment\, for the things around us. \nThis virtual presentation is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Museum is pleased to invite all community members to a Vets Town Hall. Veterans of any era who served in any capacity are invited to stand before their community and speak for up to ten minutes about what it was like to serve their country. Non-veterans are encouraged to attend and listen. This event is non-political\, and all perspectives are valued. There will be no question-and-answer period or debate on American foreign policy. Attendees will simply listen and learn about what it was like to serve in the wars that this nation has chosen to fight. \nThe Vets Town Hall is free to attend\, and snacks will be provided. To rsvp as an observer\, click here. \nIf you are a veteran who would like to speak at the event\, click here to fill out a brief web form. You can learn more about the guidelines for speakers here\, at the Vets Town Hall website. DESCRIPTION:Apples have been called the country’s “most endangered food.” Currently\, 86% of apple varieties grown in the US have vanished\, and four out of five are on the brink of extinction. \nBut thanks to the hard cider revival\, rare apples are being saved. In this talk\, food historian Sarah Lohman will give an overview of her new book\, Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods\, with a focus on the history of apples and hard cider in New Jersey and the stories of three apples reclaimed from the brink of extinction. \nBefore and after the talk\, you can sample locally-made craft hard ciders\, courtesy of New England Cider Company and Long View Ciderhouse! \nThe book can be purchased at the event\, courtesy of River Bend Bookshop. \n$10 Adults\, $8 Seniors. It printed the first fugitive slave narrative\, sold millions of dollars of books by subscription\, and inspired children’s sections in libraries nationwide. From the 1700s to today\, Connecticut has been compiling its bookshelf\, one sermon\, ledger\, map\, schoolbook\, law\, psalm\, newspaper\, and book at a time. Connecticut’s Bookshelf explores how these documents were made\, shared\, and received\, and asks you to consider: What belongs on the shelf? SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Mouth to Mouth - The Tooth Trade in Washington’s World
DESCRIPTION:In 1807\, dentist John Greenwood imported 4\,300 human teeth for 432 pieces of silver from a French Surgeon dentist. Greenwood constantly sought teeth to fill the increasing demand for dentures\, bridges\, and live tooth transplants\, including crafting several sets of dentures for George Washington. Greenwood was not alone in this need as eighteenth and early nineteenth-century dentists frequently advertised to purchase human teeth\, including Connecticut-based dentist Richard Skinner. Throughout the eighteenth century\, the discourses around teeth dramatically shifted as new systems of meanings developed as white\, straight\, and complete teeth became associated with virtue and American republicanism. \nIn this virtual presentation\, Lucy Smith\, New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee\, will examine how this ideological shift fueled a tooth trade that traces the movement of early dentists throughout Connecticut\, across the ocean\, and at the intimate level of teeth moving from one mouth to another. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. Click here to register. \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from Debra Cowan and Cate Clifford as they present Songs that Touch the Past! \nAs always\, we are open at 5pm to enjoy the museum and vendors. Music will run from 6pm-7:30pm. \nAbout the Artists \n“Stunning” is the word often used to describe Debra Cowan’s vocals. She performs unaccompanied or with guitar\, interpreting a wide range of traditional and contemporary songs. She is a full-time performer who bridges the old and new with a refreshing stage presence and has released six recordings\, all having earned praise on both sides of the Atlantic. She tours in the United Kingdom and in North America and can often be seen on stage with her good friend\, singer and musician John Roberts. Debra is a proud member of American Federation of Musicians Local 1000 and endorses Harvey Leach guitars. \nCate Clifford is a typically unaccompanied singer based in Rhode Island whose voice has raised rafters and cracked hearts in homes\, venues\, recording studios\, and festivals throughout the country. With powerful vocals\, sensitive harmonies\, and engaging context gleaned from intensive apprenticeship in the singing traditions that move her most\, Cate creates a vivid and accessible pathway to the songs she offers\, the people and stories behind them\, and the profound\, timeless delight of sharing both.  She maintains that no set is immune to a dash of Sondheim or a sprinkle of Shakespeare. \nWe are pleased to welcome Debra and Cate to the summer concert series as alumni of the 2020-2021 Southern New England Apprenticeship Program! In Songs that Touch the Past\, they’ll be sharing some great traditional story songs along with favorites from their repertoires. There will also be songs for audiences to join in\, so come ready to sing along! \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Music will begin at 6pm. \nAbout the Artist \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening of spontaneous improvisations\, dazzling rhythm\, and mesmerizing dance! \nCurated by Grammy-winning Tabla maestro Sandeep Das\, this special program will take the audience on an exciting journey through the world of North Indian Classical Music and Kathak dance. From ancient compositions to enchanting displays of virtuosic drumming and footwork\, it’s sure to be a night to remember! \nAbout Sandeep Das (Curator): \nA Grammy winning-musician\, Guggenheim Fellow\, and groundbreaking composer of new works\, Sandeep Das carries forward a 4\,000 year-old legacy of traditional Indian music that has been passed down from Guru (teacher) to Shishya (student) for generations. Das has been described as a “creator of myths with Houdini-like skills” (The Sydney Morning Herald\, Australia) and has collaborated with top musicians and ensembles from across the globe such as Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble\, with whom he has performed for the past 21 years\, as well as Paquito D’Rivera\, Bobby McFarin\, and iconic orchestras like the New York Philharmonic\, Boston Symphony\, and Chicago Symphony\, among others. \nPassionate about sharing his knowledge with the next generation\, he founded Das Music School in 2015\, which provides Indian Classical Music instruction to students worldwide. This concert showcases a few of Das’ local student apprentices\, offering a unique glimpse into the “Guru-Shishya Parampara\,” where some of the most impactful learning for up-and-coming artists happens live on stage during a performance. \nAbout the Performers: \n \nBailey O’Donnell is an apprentice of maestro Sandeep Dance and a Tabla player\, percussionist\, and composer. A classically-trained musician\, her experiences at the intersection of two diverse rhythmic traditions give her a unique perspective and ability to facilitate exchanges between Western Classical and Indian Classical Music. Bailey has had the honor of performing with her Guru at the Chan Centre in Vancouver\, Canada and the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, and has also performed with various ensembles at venues like the Chicago Symphony Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, and TivoliVredenburg in the Netherlands. We are pleased to have supported Bailey’s apprenticeship with Mr. Das during the 25th year of our Southern New England Apprenticeship Program. \nShonool Malik is a North Indian Kathak dancer. She is a student of maestro Sandeep Das and Sangita Chatterjee\, and her initial dance training was under Gretchen Hayden. Shonool has presented many dance masterclasses for children through various organizations\, and also has over a decade of experience in higher education administration. \nSriram Akella is a promising young Tabla player who has been learning from maestro Sandeep Das since he was just 6 years old. He currently attends Stoughton High School and recently performed with his Guru at the Newton Cultural Council’s annual Linda Platt Newton Festival of the Arts. \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W.
