SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Indigenous Unfreedom and Race Making in Early New England
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Presentation!\nIn this virtual presentation\, New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee\, Dr. Joanne Jahnke-Wegner\, will examine how English enslavement of Indigenous peoples during the Pequot and King Philip’s Wars contributed to the racialization of Indigenous peoples in early New England. During the process of enslaving and dispossessing Indigenous peoples\, English colonists combined Atlantic world stereotypes of Indigenous peoples and their own colonial practices in Ireland with cultural\, theological\, military\, and economic discourses to racialize Indigenous peoples in order to justify colonial actions. English colonists created racialized habits of mind about Indigenous peoples that were used to justify continued Indigenous dispossession and marginalization in colonial New England. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. Click here to register. \nQuestions? Contact Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, Jen Busa via email at jbusa@connecticutmuseum.org. \nAbout the Speaker:  Dr. Joanne Jahnke-Wegner is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire\, where she teaches classes on early America\, women and gender\, and race and medicine. She received her PhD from the University of Minnesota and is currently at work on three articles and a book manuscript on captivity\, enslavement\, and race making in early New England. \nImage: Universal Images Group/Getty Images\, Washington Post\, December 20\, 2022

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn - Slavery’s Hinterlands: Rural New England in the Atlantic World
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the seventeenth century\, ships and sugar streamed between the Caribbean and New England. Though it would be a mistake to suggest that New England was a slave society on par with South Carolina\, Barbados\, or Virginia\, New England’s economy grew larger and more powerful\, not because of slavery’s distance or marginality\, but because of its centrality. This Atlantic slave economy made an imprint across the entire region. Rural New Englanders provided the draft animals and the foodstuffs that Caribbean plantations relied on. They sought out and consumed the rum and sugar those plantations produced. In towns like Lebanon and Groton\, the enslaved faced unique forms of racism and oppression\, which reflect the particularities of New England town life. \nThis virtual presentation by Isaac Lee\, a New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee\, will explore this history and explain how rural New England sustained Atlantic slavery. \nThis virtual presentation is free and open to the public. Click here to register. \nQuestions? Contact Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, Jen Busa via email at jbusa@connecticutmuseum.org. \nImage: “Spring on the Salmon River\,” an original painting by Maggie Arnold\, depicting Venture Smith’s homestead on Haddam Neck. SUMMARY:Dolls of Our Lives: Book Talk and Author Signing
DESCRIPTION:Are you a Molly (a patriotic overachiever with a flair for drama)? Felicity (the original horse girl)? Kirsten (a cottagecore fan who seems immune to cholera)\, Samantha (a savior complex in a sailor suit)\, or Josefina (who dealt with grief by befriending a baby goat)? Have you ever wondered how Britney Spears or Michelle Kwan would answer that question? And why do we care so much which girl we are? \nCombining history\, travelogue\, and memoir\, Dolls of Our Lives follows Allison Horrocks and Mary Mahoney on an unforgettable journey to the past as they delve into the origins of this iconic brand. Continuing the conversations that began on their podcast\, they set out to answer the lingering questions that keep them up at night. What did American Girl inventor Pleasant Rowland hope to say to children with these dolls? Was girl power something that could be ordered from a catalogue\, described by a magazine\, or modeled in the plot lines of books? And how – and why – did this brand shape an entire generation? \nThrough interviews with a legion of devoted doll lovers\, a field trip to Colonial Williamsburg\, a place that inspired Pleasant to create American Girl\, and an exploration of their own (complicated) fandom\, this is a deep dive into one of the 90s most coveted products – the American Girl doll. \nThe book can be purchased at the event\, courtesy of River Bend Bookshop. And check out Mary and Allison’s podcast\, Dolls of Our Lives! \n$10 Adults\, $8 Seniors. Half price for Connecticut Museum general members\, free for NARM-level members. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at nbelanger@connecticutmuseum.org. \n

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn - Darned\, Patched\, and Mended: Repairing Textiles in 18th Century America
DESCRIPTION:All things will one day break. In early America\, this rule also held true\, as material items regularly and repeatedly broke\, and required repair work for continued use and preservation. Textiles—perhaps the most ubiquitous\, valuable\, and fragile materials in early America—are no exception. But what can a darned stocking\, a patched pair of breeches\, or a mended foresail tell us about early America\, and why are textile repair practices worthy of notice? \nIn this virtual presentation\, New England Regional Fellowship Consortium (NERFC) Fellow Emily Whitted will utilize examples from her research in the museum and archival collections at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History to investigate the history of textile repair in early America. By locating textile repair inside early American homes and workshops\, on the decks of ships\, and inside military camps\, she will explore mending as both a labor practice and a historical model for caring deeply\, whether through economic necessity or sentiment\, for the things around us. \nThis virtual presentation is free and open to the public. Click here to register. \n\nQuestions? Contact Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, Jen Busa via email at jbusa@connecticutmuseum.org. \nImage: Darned crewelwork fragment\, New England\, 1760. Wool on linen. SUMMARY:Guided Tour of Connecticut's Bookshelf
DESCRIPTION:Drop in for a guided tour of our latest special exhibition\, Connecticut’s Bookshelf. Connecticut is the birthplace of comic books\, copyright law\, Noah Webster\, and the recipe for pumpkin pie. It printed the first fugitive slave narrative\, sold millions of dollars of books by subscription\, and inspired children’s sections in libraries nationwide. From the 1700s to today\, Connecticut has been compiling its bookshelf\, one sermon\, ledger\, map\, schoolbook\, law\, psalm\, newspaper\, and book at a time. Connecticut’s Bookshelf explores how these documents were made\, shared\, and received\, and asks you to consider: What belongs on the shelf? And who gets to decide? \nTours are included with museum admission. No pre-registration required! \nIf you’re interested in arranging a private tour of the exhibition for your book club\, community center\, or other group\, contact Adult Programs Manager Natalie Belanger\, nbelanger@connnecticutmuseum.org. \n
