Speak Up brings professional and amateur storytellers to stage to share true stories from their lives. Speak Up founders and producers Matthew and Elysha Dicks work closely with storytellers to help them craft their stories for the stage and teach storytelling workshops to storytellers at all levels. \nSpeak Up storytelling shows feature 6-8 storytellers who tell true stories from their lives on a predetermined theme. Shows showcase a blend of seasoned storytellers and people telling stories for the first time. Stories are 6-8 minutes in length. Shows are hosted by Speak Up producer Elysha Dicks\, and storyteller and producer Matthew Dicks serves as one of the storytellers for the evening.

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: The Neurocolorline -- Locating Black Autism and Black Neurodivergence in the Archives
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a virtual discussion by Dr. Diana Paulin. The title of Dr. Diana Paulin’s talk borrows from W.E.B.’s 1903 scholarly study in which he contends that “the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line- the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia and Africa\, in America and the islands of the sea” (The Souls of Black Folk). This powerful image of a racialized line that separates communities and nations still resonates in the Twenty-first century. However\, the colorline is shaped by other factors\, such as class and religion. \nIn this virtual lunchtime talk\, Dr. Paulin will talk about how the history of anti-black racism and ableism in the U.S. erases both the past and contemporary experiences of Black neurodivergence. In fact\, much of the archival work is detective work\, reading between the lines\, searching in unlikely collections\, and identifying gaps in historical\, medical\, and cultural narratives because of the historical devaluation of Black well-being and humanity during enslavement and beyond. In the process of locating historic and contemporary instances of Black neurodivergence\, Dr. Paulin contributes to the efforts to learn from\, better understand\, and include the contributions\, survival strategies\, challenges experienced not only by Black people but also by all neurodivergent people in our neurodiverse past and present world. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public. Click here to register through Yapsody. You’ll get a confirmation email and the Zoom link will be in the attached ticket. You’ll also receive a reminder email with the Zoom link the morning of the event. \nQuestions? Contact Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, Jen Busa via email at jennifer_busa@chs.org\, or call (860) 236-5621 x282.

SUMMARY:Facets of Indian Culture
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Layavinyasa back to the CMCH to share Facets of Indian Culture\, an exciting opportunity for all ages to experience Kuchipudi dance\, and learn more about the cultural values and beliefs that permeate this art form. \nKuchipudi is a south Indian classical dance form accompanied by Carnatic music. Dancers dramatically interpret songs with spiritual themes\, utilizing many symbolic gestures and rhythmic movements to embody the mythic figures of the songs. To further illustrate and explain the meanings that are part of the performances\, Layavinyasa will also showcase Indian material culture including figures and paintings that contain the same symbolic elements\, and which will help show the spiritual themes of the lyrics\, as well as illustrate community festivities. \nThe program will showcase figures such as Nataraja\, which is the Hindu god Shiva in his form as the cosmic dancer. He holds an hourglass-shaped drum in his upper right hand\, which in dance is depicted with a “damaru” hand gesture\, both symbolic of rhythm and time. A cobra uncoils from his right forearm\, while his palm shows the “abhaya” gesture\, which means to not fear evil. \nThe program will also feature the Dandiya Raas\, a popular communal dance performed during Navrathri Festival\, another type of portrayal of cosmic dance\, this time depicting Lord Krishna and friends\, and the cycle of time\, birth\, life\, death\, and rebirth. \nThe program is partly funded by CT Humanities\, and will be offered free to the public. There will be a Question and Answer session after the program. We hope to see you there!
