SUMMARY:Frederick Law Olmsted: Bringing Nature to the City
DESCRIPTION:  \nApril 26\, 2022 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted\, the master designer of public parks and a founder of the field landscape architecture. Join historian and filmmaker Laurence Cotton (originator of and consulting producer to the PBS special “Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America”) as he does a deep dive into the remarkable life and career of the Renaissance-man Olmsted–writer\, philosopher\, social reformer\, advocate for the preservation of natural scenery\, and creator of some of the most beautiful public and private parks and gardens in all of North America. \nIn his presentation\, Laurence will talk about the influences of design traditions\, aesthetics and philosophies that influenced Olmsted’s thought—including English garden design\, the Hudson River School and Transcendentalism\, and the role the public park as a “public health institution”—in times past and present. Laurence will also give a visual tour of representative masterful landscapes designed by Olmsted\, Senior\, as well as his two sons and the Olmsted Bros. landscape architecture firm\, with a focus on southern New England. \n$5 CMCH members\, $10 non-members; $8 for seniors. Light refreshments will be provided. Purchase tickets here\, or you may purchase at the door. Includes admission to the museum galleries — come early to view! \nQuestions? Contact Adult Programs Manager Natalie Belanger via email at natalie_belanger@chs.org\, or call (860) 236-5621 x289. \nAbout The Speaker \nLaurence Cotton\, currently based in Portland\, Oregon\, a city that benefits from an Olmsted-master planned park system\, originally hails from Boston\, renowned for its Olmsted landscapes and the home base for generations of landscape design practitioners working for the Olmsted Bros. firm. A practicing public historian\, and writer/producer of historical films for PBS\, Mr. Cotton was trained as a cultural anthropologist and brings that lens to bear on much of his work. He has worked with the tribal populations on throughout the Columbia River watershed and has also worked on open space acquisition and the designs of parks and trails in Pacific Northwest. He also brings training as an interpretive naturalist\, is a birder and a photographer. His visit to Hartford is one of many such stops on his 2022 tour of the U.S. to present programs about the Olmsted legacy. \nImage: CMCH 1990.110.30\, Postcard\, Drive at Seaside Park\, Bridgeport

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Punch and Judy -- Tradition\, Popular Culture\, and Puppetry
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a virtual discussion by Dr. Jungmin Song on the history of Punch and Judy\, the comical British hand puppet tradition\, featuring the trickster character Punch and his wife Judy that was also exceedingly popular in the United States in the nineteenth century. Punch and Judy plays are episodic\, with Punch interacting with his wife Judy and their baby\, and opposing various figures of authority and characters drawn from other entertainment genres. \nIn this lunchtime talk\, Dr. Song will highlight the controversial nature of Punch and Judy.   Although Punch and Judy has been loved by the public over the centuries\, it carries elements from the past no longer considered acceptable to most current audiences\, such as misogyny\, domestic violence\, capital punishment\, and racism. Many Punch and Judy performers endeavor to rework the tradition so that it reflects contemporary concerns and issues without losing its core anarchic spirit.  \nThis presentation is virtual and free. Click here to register. The Zoom link will be in the attached ticket you receive with your confirmation email.    \nQuestions? Email Jennifer Busa at jennifer_busa@chs.org.   \n About the Speaker\nDr. Jungmin Song is Assistant Professor in Residence at the Department of Dramatic Arts and research associate at the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut. She curated the exhibitions Shakespeare and Puppetry (2020) and Puppetry’s Racial Reckoning (2021) at the Ballard. Korean-born\, she lived\, studied\, and worked in London\, England for nearly 20 years before she started working at UConn in 2019.\n  \nImage:  Rod Burnett’s Punch and Judy\, May Fayre\, Covent Garden\, London\, May 10\, 2015. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Lincoln's Suspension of Habeas Corpus
DESCRIPTION:Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus during the Civil War. This was controversial at the time and continues to spark debate. What were Lincoln’s legal and practical justifications for this action? Was he recklessly assuming dictatorial powers or acting out of genuine necessity to save the Union? Is it fair to judge Lincoln by today’s standards or should he be evaluated by applying the norms of his time?   \n These fascinating issues\, and others\, will be discussed during this lunchtime talk by Connecticut Judge Douglas S. Lavine.  \n  This virtual program is free. To secure a spot\, click here to register now. You will receive an email confirmation with the Zoom link attached\, and we will send you a reminder on the day of the program.   \nQuestions? Contact Jennifer Busa\, Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, at jennifer_busa@chs.org.  \n About the Speaker  \nDouglas S. Lavine was appointed to the bench by Governor Lowell P. Weicker\, Jr.\, in 1993. He is now a Judge Trial Referee on the Connecticut Appellate Court. A graduate of Colgate University\, where he majored in history\, he attended  Columbia School of Journalism and the University of Connecticut School of Law.   He was a  federal prosecutor prior to being appointed to the bench. Judge Lavine is a lifelong admirer of Abraham Lincoln.  \nImage: Library of Congress\, Prints & Photographs Division\, LC-DIG-cwpb-04352

Click here to register. The Zoom link will be in the attached ticket you receive with your confirmation email.     \n Questions? Email Jennifer Busa at jennifer_busa@chs.org.   \n About the Speaker:   \nDr. Edward E. Andrews is an Associate Professor in The Department of History and Classics at Providence College. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn -- A Young\, Sad Country: Melancholia in Colonial New England and Its Impact on Early American Literature
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, early American scholars have embraced the History of Medicine\, using interdisciplinary approaches to uncover how colonists understood and treated illness. However\, scholarship has primarily focused on epidemics affecting the body\, leaving mental health largely unexplored.   \nThis virtual lunchtime talk by Emily Gates is part of a larger project investigating how historical documents by medical practitioners and clergy construct a record of the evolving understanding of melancholia and relate to the literary works from the colonial and Early Republic eras. Therefore\, in this presentation Emily will only focus on one type of melancholia\, but in doing so\, it will provide a thorough illustration of language used by the mentally ill to describe their condition\, the understanding of melancholia by religious and medical authorities\, and the surprising connection between real cases and the emergence of early American literature\, which features predominately melancholic characters.  \nThis virtual program is free. \nAbout the Speaker   \nEmily “Em” Gates is a PhD candidate in Literary Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta She is currently working to complete her dissertation linking high rates of melancholia in colonial New England to the emergence of predominantly melancholic characters in early American literature. Prior to this\, she completed her undergraduate work at Berry College in Rome\, GA before moving to Canterbury\, England\, where she graduated with her MA in English and American Literature from the University of Kent. Em is a burgeoning Early Americanist whose primary research interest is literature and medicine\, especially the intersection of literature\, trauma\, and mental illness. She also loves multiethnic literature of the United States and southern literature. You can find her previous work in Litterae Mentis: A Journal of Literary Studies and Panoply: a literary zine.  \n

SUMMARY:The Color of Care: Film Screening and Community Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a showing of THE COLOR OF CARE. This film chronicles how people of color suffer from systemically substandard healthcare. It was produced by Harpo Productions from executive producers Oprah Winfrey\, Terry Wood and Catherine Cyr\, and directed by OSCAR®-nominated and Emmy® award winning director Yance Ford\, with producer Kate Bolger. \nTHE COLOR OF CARE traces the origins of racial health disparities to practices that began during slavery in the U.S. and continue today. Using personal testimony\, expert interviews\, and disturbing data\, the film reveals the impact of racism on health\, serving as an urgent warning of what must be done to save lives. \nAfter the film\, we will have a facilitated discussion about the film. \nThis program is free and open to the public\, but we request that you to pre-register here. Light refreshments will be served.
