SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Serenity Mental Art for Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Our current exhibition\, Common Struggle\, Individual Experience: An Exhibition on Mental Health includes several ways that Connecticans approach healing and support for mental health. Please join us as Artist Jampa Tsondue and Yeshi Dorjee\, a Buddhist monk and artist\, discuss Thangka art and meditation to promote healing. \nThangka are sacred Tibetan Buddhist artworks. Thangka art is more than just images\, it contains the information you need to relax your mind and find peace. In this talk\, Jampa will share with us how thangka artworks promote natural healing within each person. Yeshi will share with us steps to meditate upon the thangka to decrease mental and physical suffering and increase healing. \nThis presentation is virtual and free. Click here to register. The Zoom link will be in the attached ticket you receive with your confirmation email. \nQuestions? Email Jennifer Busa at jennifer_busa@chs.org. \nAbout the Speakers \nJampa Tsondue was born in India to Tibetan refugee parents. He began his art studies at age 13. He became an apprentice to this famous painter at the Gyudmed Tantric University. He trained in the Buddhist holy tradition of thangka painting for 20 years. Jampa has painted many thangka for different monasteries with his mentor. Their most important project took four painters nearly four years to complete – recreating forty-one thangkas in the Dalai Lama’s collection\, each 4 feet by 3 feet\, depicting the past lives of the Buddha. \nJampa moved to Connecticut in 1992. Today\, he continues to paint and teach apprentice artists. As is his tradition\, every morning he prays and meditates to reflect on compassion\, loving kindness\, and tolerance. \nYeshi Dorjee was born in Bhutan after his mother escaped from Tibet. As a child he entered into Gyueme Monastic University in India to study art and philosophy until he was 36. He moved to California and taught art and meditation at the University of California Santa Barbara and at other centers. He presented at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2000. Yeshi is a master of Tibetan thangka painting as well as butter sculpture. \nIn 2019\, Yeshi moved to Connecticut. He provides spiritual guidance to the growing Buddhist community in Old Saybrook and Norwich. Yeshi knows\, presents\, and has written down many traditional narratives of the Tibetan people as well as Buddhist allegories and lesson stories. as well. \nImage: Mental Replacement\, First Step of Meditation\, 2001. SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Hartford Steel Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from Hartford Steel Symphony! This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM\, and music is from 6PM-7:30PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food\, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain\, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium. All our summer concerts will be livestreamed to our YouTube Channel. \nAbout the Band \nHartford Steel Symphony was founded in 1989 in Hartford and has become the area’s premier steel band. Kelvin Griffith\, the band’s director\, is well-known in Trinidad as a panist\, or steel drum player. Griffith is also a maker of steel drums\, and all the steel drums in the band are made by him. The steel pans reflect other instrument names based on the kind of sound they make—like cello\, bass\, guitar\, and tenor pan. \nHartford Steel plays a wide variety of musical genres specific to the West Indies\, including soca\, calypso\, and reggae\, and also can play pop\, classical\, gospel\, and jazz\, all arranged to reflect the rhythms of the islands. The band’s members have competed in years of steel band competitions—part of the culture of steel band performance in the Caribbean—and can always be found at the annual Taste of the Caribbean festival\, and at the West Indian Independence Celebration and Parade in Hartford\, as well as West Indian independence celebrations around New England. Hartford Steel Symphony has also played with The Hartford Symphony Orchestra and celebrities like Bernadette Peters and Len “Boogsie” Sharp\, one of the steel drums’ greatest panists. \nOur Summer Concert Series is funded through the support of the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee; the Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Negra\, negra\, negra soy
DESCRIPTION:Come witness as Black women share their words\, stories\, and creative talents to show the diversity of Blackness. Negra\, negra\, negra soy (“Black\, Black\, I am a Black woman”) is a community performance created by the afrofeminist arts collective\, Kukily\, that creates interdisciplinary work in performance\, installation\, audiovisual and community-based projects. The US premiere of this project (first conducted in Argentina) is being directed by Connecticut artist and co-founder of Kukily\, Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald. \nColleen shares\, “The creative process of ‘Negra\, negra\, negra soy’ creates space for participants to get to know each other\, for the audience to get to know them\, and for bridges to be constructed between individuals and communities. I also think this project is very important now because people of African descent have been disproportionately affected by the ongoing pandemic. Creating art together is healing\, especially art that uplifts the voices of Black women and folks of diverse gender expressions.” \nKukily emphasizes choosing performer-collaborators of different ages\, nationalities\, ethnic backgrounds\, skin tones\, languages\, hair textures\, professions\, religions\, generating essential conversations around who we are and how we create networks of solidarity within our communities. \nThe event will take place on August 20th at Kamora’s Cultural Corner at 75 Sterling St.\, Hartford\, CT. The event will include the Black Art Heals Bazaar with local vendors starting at 4pm\, and the performance will begin by 5pm. The CMCH is proud to be a fiscal sponsor for this event. SUMMARY:**Canceled** Lunch and Learn: The Neurocolorline -- Locating Black Autism and Black Neurodivergence in the Archives
DESCRIPTION:We’re sorry\, this event has been canceled. \nPlease join us for a virtual discussion by Dr. Diana Paulin.  The title of this talk borrows from W.E.B.’s 1903 scholarly study in which he contends that “the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line- the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia and Africa\, in America and the islands of the sea” (The Souls of Black Folk). This powerful image of a racialized line that separates communities and nations still resonates in the twenty-first century. However\, the colorline is shaped by other factors\, such as class and religion.   \nDr. Paulin will talk about how the history of anti-black racism and ableism in the U.S. erases both the past and contemporary experiences of Black neurodivergence. In fact\, much of the archival work is detective work\, reading between the lines\, searching in unlikely collections\, and identifying gaps in historical\, medical\, and cultural narratives because of the historical devaluation of Black well-being and humanity during enslavement and beyond. In the process of locating historic and contemporary instances of Black neurodivergence\, Dr. Paulin contributes to the efforts to learn from\, better understand\, and include the contributions\, survival strategies\, challenges experienced not only by Black people but also by all neurodivergent people in our neurodiverse past and present world.  \nThis virtual program is free. To secure a spot\, click here to register now. You will receive an email confirmation with the Zoom link attached\, and we will send you a reminder on the day of the program.   \n Questions? Contact Jennifer Busa\, Public Programs and Special Events Coordinator\, at jennifer_busa@chs.org.  \n About the Speaker  \nDiana R. Paulin is Associate Professor of American Studies and English\, and affiliate faculty in Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Trinity College\, Connecticut. She co-directs Trinity’s Global Health Humanities Gateway Program and coordinates the African American Studies minor. Dr. Paulin has published\, taught\, and presented extensively on Black autism. She was a speaker at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Crip the Met” series. She is currently working on a book project (Autistic Blackness)\, and on collaborative interactive digital archive (Locating Blackness).

SUMMARY:Woodward Distinguished Lecture Series: Sebastian Junger
DESCRIPTION:The CMCH is pleased to welcome Sebastian Junger\, Award-Winning Journalist\, Director\, and Best-Selling Author of The Perfect Storm & TRIBE\, to deliver this year’s Charles Guilford Woodward Lecture. \nJunger is the internationally acclaimed\, best-selling author of WAR\, The Perfect Storm\, A Death in Belmont and Fire. He is also the acclaimed director of the documentary films Restrepo and Korengal. As a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and as a contributor to ABC News\, he has covered major international news stories and has been awarded the National Magazine Award and a SAIS Novartis Prize for Journalism. \nJunger will discuss his most recent works\, including TRIBE and Freedom. Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging\, takes readers on an investigation of the experiences of veterans and proposes that a major cause of pain is not being at war but coming home. We all have a strong instinct to belong to small groups defined by clear purpose and understanding -“tribes.” In TRIBE\, Junger demonstrates how this tribal connection has been largely lost in modern society. He examines PTSD as a side effect of soldiers leaving the close bonds they’ve formed in their military platoons and returning to a disconnected modern society and argues that regaining a sense of closeness may be the key to our psychological survival. His most recent book\, Freedom\, examines a tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human: the conflict between community and freedom. \nDoors open at 5:45 PM. Come early to view CMCH’s exhibition\, Common Struggle\, Individual Experience: An Exhibition About Mental Health. \nCopies of Junger’s books will be on sale during the event courtesy of River Bend Bookshop. He will be available for book signing after the event. Light refreshments will be provided. \nThis event is free for CMCH members and $15 for non-members. Reserve your tickets now! \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Punch and Judy -- Tradition\, Popular Culture\, and Puppetry
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a virtual discussion by Dr. Jungmin Song on the history of Punch and Judy\, the comical British hand puppet tradition\, featuring the trickster character Punch and his wife Judy that was also exceedingly popular in the United States in the nineteenth century. Punch and Judy plays are episodic\, with Punch interacting with his wife Judy and their baby\, and opposing various figures of authority and characters drawn from other entertainment genres. \nIn this lunchtime talk\, Dr. Song will highlight the controversial nature of Punch and Judy.   Although Punch and Judy has been loved by the public over the centuries\, it carries elements from the past no longer considered acceptable to most current audiences\, such as misogyny\, domestic violence\, capital punishment\, and racism. Many Punch and Judy performers endeavor to rework the tradition so that it reflects contemporary concerns and issues without losing its core anarchic spirit.  \nThis presentation is virtual and free. Click here to register. The Zoom link will be in the attached ticket you receive with your confirmation email.    \nQuestions? Email Jennifer Busa at jennifer_busa@chs.org.   \n About the Speaker\nDr. Jungmin Song is Assistant Professor in Residence at the Department of Dramatic Arts and research associate at the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut. She curated the exhibitions Shakespeare and Puppetry (2020) and Puppetry’s Racial Reckoning (2021) at the Ballard. Korean-born\, she lived\, studied\, and worked in London\, England for nearly 20 years before she started working at UConn in 2019.\n  \nImage:  Rod Burnett’s Punch and Judy\, May Fayre\, Covent Garden\, London\, May 10\, 2015.
