SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn -- A Young\, Sad Country: Melancholia in Colonial New England and Its Impact on Early American Literature
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, early American scholars have embraced the History of Medicine\, using interdisciplinary approaches to uncover how colonists understood and treated illness. However\, scholarship has primarily focused on epidemics affecting the body\, leaving mental health largely unexplored.   \nThis virtual lunchtime talk by Emily Gates is part of a larger project investigating how historical documents by medical practitioners and clergy construct a record of the evolving understanding of melancholia and relate to the literary works from the colonial and Early Republic eras. Therefore\, in this presentation Emily will only focus on one type of melancholia\, but in doing so\, it will provide a thorough illustration of language used by the mentally ill to describe their condition\, the understanding of melancholia by religious and medical authorities\, and the surprising connection between real cases and the emergence of early American literature\, which features predominately melancholic characters.  \nThis virtual program is free. Prior to this\, she completed her undergraduate work at Berry College in Rome\, GA before moving to Canterbury\, England\, where she graduated with her MA in English and American Literature from the University of Kent. Em is a burgeoning Early Americanist whose primary research interest is literature and medicine\, especially the intersection of literature\, trauma\, and mental illness. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a showing of THE COLOR OF CARE. This film chronicles how people of color suffer from systemically substandard healthcare. It was produced by Harpo Productions from executive producers Oprah Winfrey\, Terry Wood and Catherine Cyr\, and directed by OSCAR®-nominated and Emmy® award winning director Yance Ford\, with producer Kate Bolger. \nTHE COLOR OF CARE traces the origins of racial health disparities to practices that began during slavery in the U.S. and continue today. Using personal testimony\, expert interviews\, and disturbing data\, the film reveals the impact of racism on health\, serving as an urgent warning of what must be done to save lives. \nAfter the film\, we will have a facilitated discussion about the film. \nThis program is free and open to the public\, but we request that you to pre-register here. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: The History of Czech Communities in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a virtual talk by Dr. Martin Nekola as he discusses the history of the Czech people building a life in the U.S. \nThousands of people dreamed of leaving poor Bohemian lands\, crossing the ocean and entering the country of endless hope. Around 1506\, the first news about America in the Czech language had spread across Bohemia and was received with great interest. In 1585\, the alchemist and metallurgist Joachim Gans from Prague arrived\, as part of an English expedition\, on the shores of today´s North Carolina and was probably the first Czech who ever set foot on American soil. In the following two centuries more individuals or small groups of pioneers went through the dangerous journey to find happiness on a mysterious continent in the West. \nOnly after the middle of the 19th century was there a massive wave of migration. The emigrants’ motivation was the vision of better living conditions and of getting rich easily\, but also there was a desire to escape the political\, religious and national oppression in Bohemia\, at that time part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Their journey carried them by railway to German ports and from there across the Atlantic to New York\, Baltimore\, New Bern\, New Orleans or Galveston. After landing\, the settlers moved in various directions. With the outbreak of the First World War in the summer of 1914\, statistics state that there were about 350\,000 Czechs living in the USA. \nThe presentation will focus on the development of Czech neighborhoods in New York and Boston\, where the Czechs showed an extraordinary desire to associate\, and founded a number of compatriot associations\, businesses\, schools\, churches and periodicals.  Dr. Nekola will also address the Czech history of Connecticut\, where many Czechs were to be found in Hartford and Bridgeport. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.  Click here to register through Yapsody. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: What Time Is It?
DESCRIPTION:The clock may feel ever present in our lives. However\, many of the tasks we do every day rely not on the second hand but on our senses to “know time.” A recipe can tell us to simmer our soup for 15 minutes\, but that mechanical measure flies out the window if the taste\, temperature\, or consistency isn’t right. Across the Anglo-Atlantic world in the long 18th century\, craftspeople\, artisans\, and makers also relied on their senses to “know time.” \nIn this talk\, New England Regional Fellowship Consortium (NERFC) Fellow Alexandra M. Macdonald will draw from both the museum and archival collections at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History to explore the myriad ways people used their eyes\, ears\, tongue\, hands\, and nose to “regard the signs” in maker’s spaces in the long eighteenth century. DESCRIPTION:This virtual Lunch and Learn presentation by Frances O’Shaughnessy draws on military letters\, treasury reports\, and personal letters from the denoted “Port Royal Experiment\,”  including a letter from the CMCH collection\, to historicize Gullah Geechee people’s expressions of freedom during the Civil War\, what Frances calls a Black Revolution for Freedom. \nNew England Regional Fellowship Consortium (NERFC) Fellow Frances O’Shaughnessy will draw on Gullah Geechee music and sermons\, in particular\, to demonstrate an alternative narrative to the Civil War\, one that does not subsume Black practices of freedom under the U. S. Military\, but rather considers their world-making practices on the plantation\, even when their worlds proved provisional. They consider how the Black Revolution travelled across the Sea Islands\, with planters fleeing plantations as smoke from cotton fires filled the air. \nFrances narrates Gullah Geechee peoples’ destruction of planter property\, within themselves and within the land\, as the destruction of property itself – as an idea\, as a thing\, and as an essence – an anti-proprietary freedom\, whose vision encouraged Black women to rip cotton from the soil and replace it with the seeds of potatoes\, peas\, squash\, and corn.
