DESCRIPTION:Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus during the Civil War. This was controversial at the time and continues to spark debate. What were Lincoln’s legal and practical justifications for this action? Was he recklessly assuming dictatorial powers or acting out of genuine necessity to save the Union? Is it fair to judge Lincoln by today’s standards or should he be evaluated by applying the norms of his time?   \n These fascinating issues\, and others\, will be discussed during this lunchtime talk by Connecticut Judge Douglas S. Lavine.  \n  This virtual program is free. A graduate of Colgate University\, where he majored in history\, he attended  Columbia School of Journalism and the University of Connecticut School of Law.   He was a  federal prosecutor prior to being appointed to the bench. In this talk\, Dr. Andrews will discuss Newport Gardner\, an enslaved African who became a major free black community leader in Rhode Island during the post-Revolutionary years.    \n Dr. Andrews will pay special attention to the ways in which the archival holdings at The Connecticut Museum of Culture and History can help us understand the conditions of Gardner’s enslavement\, the economic landscape he inhabited\, and his persistent bondage at the hands of one of America’s most notorious slave traders.    \n This presentation is virtual and free. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the in-person opening reception for the exhibition\, The Bicycle Game.  \nThe 1890s saw an unprecedented surge in the popularity of bicycles\, and Connecticut – thanks to entrepreneur Albert Pope and the Hartford-based Pope Manufacturing Company – was a leader in bicycle production. The Bicycle Game explores this moment in history in an interactive and playful exhibition designed for visitors of all ages\, in groups or on their own. In the galleries\, visitors will find the history of the bicycle transformed by an angry villain into a series of games and puzzles that must be solved.  From trivia to bicycle racing to Chutes and Ladders\, visitors will need to rely on a host of skills to make their way through the game and preserve this important moment in Connecticut history.
