DESCRIPTION:Join the CMCH for a day of fun for all ages! Families will enjoy a variety of bicycle-related games\, crafts\, and activities\, including decorating bicycle license plates\, making tassels for their handlebars\, and more! For extra fun\, families are encouraged to bring their bicycles and ride their way through an obstacle course! Then\, they can play their way through the hands-on exhibition\, The Bicycle Game. \nThis is a free\, drop-in program – no need to pre-register! This program will take place outdoors. In the event of rain\, the program will be rescheduled to a later date. SUMMARY:Facets of Indian Culture
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Layavinyasa back to the CMCH to share Facets of Indian Culture\, an exciting opportunity for all ages to experience Kuchipudi dance\, and learn more about the cultural values and beliefs that permeate this art form. \nKuchipudi is a south Indian classical dance form accompanied by Carnatic music. Dancers dramatically interpret songs with spiritual themes\, utilizing many symbolic gestures and rhythmic movements to embody the mythic figures of the songs. To further illustrate and explain the meanings that are part of the performances\, Layavinyasa will also showcase Indian material culture including figures and paintings that contain the same symbolic elements\, and which will help show the spiritual themes of the lyrics\, as well as illustrate community festivities. \nThe program will showcase figures such as Nataraja\, which is the Hindu god Shiva in his form as the cosmic dancer. He holds an hourglass-shaped drum in his upper right hand\, which in dance is depicted with a “damaru” hand gesture\, both symbolic of rhythm and time. A cobra uncoils from his right forearm\, while his palm shows the “abhaya” gesture\, which means to not fear evil. \nThe program will also feature the Dandiya Raas\, a popular communal dance performed during Navrathri Festival\, another type of portrayal of cosmic dance\, this time depicting Lord Krishna and friends\, and the cycle of time\, birth\, life\, death\, and rebirth. \nThe program is partly funded by CT Humanities\, and will be offered free to the public. There will be a Question and Answer session after the program. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: The Jedda La Rue Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Due to the local air quality alert\, this event will be held indoors at the museum!\nJoin us for a concert featuring music from The Jedda La Rue Quartet! Our vendors will be onsite from 5:00PM. Music will begin at 6:00PM! \nAbout the Band \nThe Jedda La Rue Quartet is presented by Anne Marie Williams\, better known as “Jedda\,” who crafts a masterful collaboration through intergenerational connections and multi-talented performing artists. \nOne of Jedda’s local mentors is living legend Emery Austin Smith—jazz pianist\, arranger\, and composer—who first encouraged her to vocally venture into those known and loved\, “classic standards.” Jedda magically connects across generations\, interweaving her mastery of early childhood education and educational program design with the arts\, and delights in sharing her own “pearls of wisdom through songs\, stories\, fitness\, theater\, music\, and movement” with young children and adults. \nAs K La Rue Educational Arts in Motion\, she has provided educational resources for schools\, teachers\, and parents in the Greater Hartford area for over 35 years. In the tradition of Hartford jazz excellence\, Jedda will share familiar songs with local flavor\, stories that connect us to the histories of the music and the community\, plus a little something special of her own. She will be joined by Hartford musical luminaries Alvin Carter\, Jr. on percussion\, Christopher Casey on piano\, and Stephen Porter on bass. \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the Cornelia T. DESCRIPTION:In his groundbreaking book\, The Nation That Never Was: Reconstructing America’s Story\, Professor Kermit Roosevelt III\, University of Pennsylvania School of Law professor\, argues that our idea of the Founders’ America and its values is not true. He believes we are not the heirs of the Founders\, but we can be the heirs of Reconstruction and its vision for equality. He offers a powerful and inspirational rethinking of our country’s history and uncovers a shared past that we can be proud to claim and use as a foundation to work toward a country that fully embodies equality for all. This alternate understanding of American identity opens the door to a new understanding of ourselves and our story\, and ultimately to a better America. \nJoin us as Roosevelt rethinks how American history is viewed\, and how the ideas underpinning the country have shifted in the past two centuries—and along with it\, what it means to be American. \nCopies of Roosevelt’s book will available at the event\, courtesy of our friends at River Bend Bookshop. \n$5 CMCH members\, $10 non-members; $8 for seniors. He is a graduate of Yale Law School\, and clerked for Supreme Court Justice David Souter. He is an advisory board member for the National Constitution Center’s Coalition of Freedom\, and a Distinguished Research Fellow of the Annenberg Public Policy Center. He contributes to major media outlets including TIME\, the New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Politico\, and NPR\, and is a frequent guest on national and international TV and radio programs. Roosevelt works in a diverse range of fields\, focusing on constitutional law and conflict of laws. He has published scholarly books and articles and is also the author of two novels.

SUMMARY:The Power of Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion with distinguished Black leaders and artists as they share their experiences with the community as a source of power and joy\, and how culture can be shared to create a more just world as experienced in Connecticut. \nOur panelists have carved out space in Hartford and beyond for members of their communities to see themselves reflected beyond a single narrative. Through the creation of public venues and conversations\, our guests enable residents and artists to define themselves and their individual Black experiences. This joy is reflected in wedding photos\, renaming green space\, organizing Juneteenth celebrations\, hosting town halls\, and art galleries. It becomes a love letter to Black residents and allows neighbors to listen and learn. \nOur panelists are: \n \n\nKeith Claytor\, award-winning photographer and the owner of TimeFrozen Photography.\nAdrienne Billings-Smith\, Equity Coordinator for the town of West Hartford. She is also the founder and president of Concerned Parents of Color of West Hartford\, an organization focused on building equity and accessibility for communities of color through collaboration and partnership.\nKamora Herrington\, founder of Kamora’s Cultural Corner in Hartford. She provides youth mentorship\, intergenerational programming\, training in cultural humility\, and space for creating and nurturing community connections.\nAndre Rochester\, Fine Artist\, Curator\, and Arts Advocate from Greater Hartford. In addition to creating his own art\, Andre manages a collection of over 2500 works of art at UConn Health Center\, serves as Program Manager at The 224 EcoSpace.\nSamariya Smith\, Community History Project Manager at CMCH.
