DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception for the exhibition\, Connecticut’s Bookshelf.  \nConnecticut is the birthplace of comic books\, copyright law\, Noah Webster\, and the recipe for pumpkin pie. It printed the first fugitive slave narrative\, sold millions of dollars of books by subscription\, and inspired children’s sections in libraries nationwide. From the 1700s to today\, Connecticut has been compiling its bookshelf\, one sermon\, ledger\, map\, schoolbook\, law\, psalm\, newspaper\, and book at a time. Connecticut’s Bookshelf explores how these documents were made\, shared\, and received\, and asks you to consider: What belongs on the shelf? Such was the case of Hannah Bunce Watson\, widow of Connecticut Courant printer Ebenezer Watson\, whose determination and grit in the face of adversity laid the foundation for the paper to stay alive into the twenty-first century. \nJoin us as New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee\, C.C. DESCRIPTION:Apples have been called the country’s “most endangered food.” Currently\, 86% of apple varieties grown in the US have vanished\, and four out of five are on the brink of extinction. \nBut thanks to the hard cider revival\, rare apples are being saved. In this talk\, food historian Sarah Lohman will give an overview of her new book\, Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods\, with a focus on the history of apples and hard cider in New Jersey and the stories of three apples reclaimed from the brink of extinction. \nBefore and after the talk\, you can sample locally-made craft hard ciders\, courtesy of New England Cider Company and Long View Ciderhouse! \nThe book can be purchased at the event\, courtesy of River Bend Bookshop. \n$10 Adults\, $8 Seniors. Lohman has lectured across the country\, from the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington\, DC to The Culinary Historians of Southern California. Lohman is currently based out of Las Vegas\, Nevada. \nHer current book project\, Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods was released with W.W. Norton & Co. on October 24\, 2023.
