SUMMARY:Common Ground: Sacred Art Traditions in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Where do we find common ground? Cultural heritage art forms create and reflect meaning\, identity\, and community\, but we can become overly focused on cultural differences\, or else assume that there is a universal artistic language. But what if we can dig into—and challenge—both perspectives? In this new series\, we bring together traditional artists who practice art forms rooted in different cultural traditions to demonstrate their work\, share with one another\, and discuss their similarities and differences. Our first conversation will feature Tibetan thangka painter Yeshi Dorjee and Byzantine iconographer Marek Czarnecki\, as they discuss their sacred art traditions with one another and with audience members. Come and find paintings\, mosaics\, traditional crafts\, handmade jewelry and more at this special pop-up market\, featuring Ukrainian and Ukrainian-American artists from Greater Hartford and beyond! \nNote on payment: Artists accept cash (preferred)\, check\, Venmo\, and PayPal. \n  \nFeatured artists include: \nFelix Freudzon is a figurative and portrait artist based in West Hartford\, CT\, who specializes in re-imagining classical art styles. \nVictoria Starzef is a mosaic artist from Glastonbury\, CT\, who finds inspiration in cats\, dogs\, traveling\, and nature. Her background in oil painting and ceramics has given her a unique frame of reference to approach glass mosaicking. \nIrina Hizhytsa makes Ukrainian-American dolls. She studied with Slavic doll master artist Natalia Ledomskaya\, whose work attracted her heart and soul. Made with care from knitted fiber and macrame\, she has also studied with Alla Popova and is expanding her doll-making adventure to include plastic. For Irina\, dolls brim with energy and positivity\, and all of them are assistants in everyday life. \nCandlelight Jewelry’s selection of imported folk art and fine art from the Ukrainian School of Art for Children and other Ukrainian artists\, including: \nNicolas Zalevsky\, based in Farmington CT\, a painter whose works evoke surrealism\, magic realism\, and photorealism. Educated at the Ukrainian Academy of Printing and the Shevchenko State Art School\, his work has been recognized and exhibited locally and internationally. \nLuba Kuper\, a candlemaker specializing in natural beeswax candles. SUMMARY:The 29th Connecticut Regiment And the Fight For Freedom — Film Screening and Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the short film “The 29th Connecticut Regiment and the Fight For Freedom\,” followed by a presentation by one of the filmmakers. \nThis original documentary\, which won Best Connecticut Film at the 2023 Mystic Film Festival\, tells the story of the brave African-American men who enlisted in Connecticut’s 29th Colored Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and fought for the freedom of their people. The film tells their remarkable story of sacrifice and heroism on battlefields in South Carolina and Virginia. Near the end of the war\, the 29th Connecticut was sent to Brownsville\, Texas where they were part of the federal force that occupied that town and brought news of the emancipation of the enslaved – celebrated today as Juneteenth. \nAfter the film screening\, Christopher Barlow of the Berlin Equity Action Team will give a presentation about the making of the film. \nBefore and after the program\, we invite you to browse our exhibition\, Wide Awake: Campaigning for Lincoln. The exhibition highlights a youth movement born out of the 1860 presidential campaign that had an outsized impact on Lincoln’s election and the war that followed. \nThis program is free! SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn - The Precious Birthright: Black Leaders and the Fight to Vote in Antebellum Rhode Island
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual presentation as historian CJ Martin discusses his new book\, The Precious Birthright: Black Leaders and the Fight to Vote in Antebellum Rhode Island\, published by the University of Massachusetts Press. \nIn 1842\, Black Rhode Islanders secured a stunning victory rarely seen in antebellum America – they won the right to vote. Amid heightened public discourse around shifting ideas of race\, citizenship\, and political rights\, they methodically deconstructed the arguments against their enfranchisement and chose the perfect moments in which to act forcefully. At the head of this movement was a cohort of prominent business and community members that formed an early example of a Black leadership class in the US\, including voting rights activist Alfred Niger\, who was born in Old Saybrook\, Connecticut. \nCJ Martin argues that Black leaders employed a unique combination of agitation and accommodation to ensure the success of this movement. By focusing on Black leadership\, Martin relates this history through the people who lived it\, and by investigating their tactics\, he deepens the story of how race played a crucial role in American citizenship. The Precious Birthright provides new insight into the larger story of Black freedom. Martin will also put this win into perspective with what was happening in Connecticut at this time. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.
