SUMMARY:Open Studio Hartford at CMCH
DESCRIPTION:The CMCH will host Open Studio Hartford as part of the 30th annual city-wide tour.  This 2 day event at the CMCH will feature over a dozen artists from the West End and members of the Sewing Circle Project. Each artist will be present to offer their artwork for exhibit and sale during the two-day event. \nOpen Studio Hartford has two completely different weekends this year on November 9 & 10 and 16 & 17 with the CMCH hosting during the second weekend. This is the seventh year CMCH has participated in the annual event that celebrates the vibrant local arts scene in Hartford. Over both weekends there will be twenty locations throughout Hartford open from 11am-5pm with nearly 400 artists in their studios or at creative group venues. All forms and genres of original artwork can be seen from paintings to sculpture and installation\, unique jewelry and more. Buy art for the home\, office or unique gifts! Visit a variety of locations to see all that Open Studio has to offer. For information\, to sponsor an artist\, volunteer or make a donation\, visit openstudiohartford.com. \nVisitors to Open Studio can also explore the exhibition\, Pieces of American History: Connecticut Quilts. This major exhibition explores the history\, culture\, and craft of quilt-making in Connecticut. Kevin is a New England Regional Fellowship Consortium (NERFC) fellow who will be conducting research here this fall. \nDid you know African American activists used the issue of African colonization to help support their claims to U.S. citizenship? \nIn this brown bag talk Kevin will explore how African American activists used the issue of African colonization to develop a galvanized national network to support their claims to U.S. citizenship.  He argues that state governments and American Colonization Society (ACS) auxiliary organizations on the state level were settler colonial enterprises that led African Americans to appeal to the federal government directly to assert their claim to U.S. citizenship. Kevin will share the results of his research at the CMCH with us during this informal presentation. \nWe will provide coffee and dessert; bring your lunch to enjoy during the talk. DESCRIPTION:[slideshow_deploy id=’14857′]\n  \nWe invite you to join us for the Opening Reception for Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community. \nThe Mas: Carnival Costumes from Hartford’s West Indian Community exhibit showcases Trinidad-style carnival costumes (Mas) made by Hartford teens during the summer 2019 Mas Camp\, the ninth year of a collaboration between the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP) and the Connecticut International Cultural Carnival Association (CICCA) under the direction of Linford “Junior” Miller. The colorful and elaborate costumes on display are similar to those worn in West Indian celebrations around the world\, and will be presented by the teens at Hartford’s Taste of the Caribbean Festival and the West Indian Parade this summer. \nThe exhibit features costumes from teen participants\, who will spend six weeks learning how to design and make the costumes under the guidance of master costume maker Keimani “Q” Delpeche. Each teen designed and built a complete costume\, including headpiece\, arm and foot bands\, girdles\, collars\, backpacks\, and all frames and attachments needed for wearing the elaborate structures. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by August 13. The exhibit explores the struggle for full citizenship and racial equality that unfolded in the 50 years after the Civil War. When slavery ended in 1865\, a period of Reconstruction began. By 1868\, all persons born in the United States were citizens and equal under the law. But efforts to create an interracial democracy were contested from the start. A harsh backlash ensued\, ushering in a half century of the “separate but equal” age of Jim Crow. \nThe exhibition highlights the central role played by African Americans in advocating for their rights. It also examines the depth and breadth of opposition to black advancement. Art\, artifacts\, photographs\, and media will help visitors explore these transformative decades in American history\, and understand their continuing relevance today. \nThis exhibition has been organized by the New-York Historical Society. DESCRIPTION:We invite CMCH members and special guests to join us for the Opening Reception for Facing War: Connecticut in World War I. \nOne hundred years ago\, the First World War consumed the lives of Connecticut residents. This exhibit will explore how people responded to the conflict and how it impacted life during and after the war. Hundreds of photographs\, letters\, posters\, clothing\, equipment\, and other artifacts from the CMCH collection help tell the stories of Connecticut individuals impacted by the war\, including military servicemen and servicewomen\, nurses\, conscientious objectors\, and YMCA and Red Cross workers. Similar to today\, in 1918 people in Connecticut struggled to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder\, concerns about immigration\, a global refugee crisis\, and discrimination. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by May 15. The Shakers are known for their craftsmanship\, distinctive design style and entrepreneurial agricultural practices.  This work enabled the Shakers to pursue their spiritual mission. Relatively few documented artifacts have survived from the Enfield community. The pieces in this exhibit are from the CMCH\, the Collection of M. Stephen and Miriam R.
