SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception: Sisu and Creativity: Finnish Cultural Heritage in Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:We invite CMCH members and special guests to join us for the Opening Reception for Sisu and Creativity: Finnish Cultural Heritage in Connecticut. \nThe Connecticut Museum of Culture and History is partnering with the Finnish American Heritage Society (FAHS) based in Canterbury CT to present art works\, images\, and documentation of the community’s history from the FAHS archives\, one of the largest Finnish collections in the country. Opening on March 21 and on view until May 6\, the exhibit will explore central characteristics of Finns in Connecticut – their agricultural cooperatives; the built environment including farms\, barns\, and community halls; the saunas constructed by every family as a social gathering place; the festivals celebrating important Finnish holidays; and the many artistic and musical traditions still practiced throughout the community. 2017 marks the centenary of Finland’s independence from Russia\, as well as the 30th anniversary of the founding of FAHS. The CT Cultural Heritage Arts Program at CMCH has collaborated with FAHS on several traditional arts apprenticeships teaching weaving\, sauna building\, woodcarving\, and birch bark weaving which will be highlighted in the exhibit. CMCH and FAHS will present a bus tour and culinary experience in eastern Connecticut on April 22. \nThe exhibit opening reception will take place at the CMCH on Friday March 24 from 5:30 – 7:00 pm and will feature speakers from the Finnish community\, along with Finnish folk music. \nPlease let us know if you are able to join us by March 17. The show\, which has continuously attracted serious buyers\, is a great venue for novice collectors and visitors interested in learning about the outstanding merchandise offered. Most of the dealers have been exhibiting at the show for years and they are always willing to impart their expertise and passion for Americana. The show’s exhibiting dealers are among the most distinguished and well-known in the industry. \nThe Haddam Historical Society\, host of the show\, is thrilled and honored to be at the landmark Hartford Armory\, the original location of the show in 1973. Speak Up brings professional and amateur storytellers to stage to share true stories from their lives. Speak Up founders and producers Matthew and Elysha Dicks work closely with storytellers to help them craft their stories for the stage and teach storytelling workshops to storytellers at all levels. \nSpeak Up storytelling shows feature 6-8 storytellers who tell true stories from their lives on a predetermined theme. Shows include a blend of seasoned storytellers and people telling stories for the first time. Stories are 6-8 minutes in length. Shows are hosted by Speak Up producer Elysha Dicks\, and storyteller and producer Matthew Dicks serves as one of the storytellers for the evening. \nTickets are $12 for CMCH members and $15 for non-members. Tickets are available online–click here. Tickets may be purchased online until 5:00 pm the day of the show\, and then they are available at the door beginning at 6:45 pm.  \nDoors open at 7:00 pm with free access to the Galleries and the performance begins at 8:00 pm. \n
