DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Museum is pleased to invite all community members to a Vets Town Hall. Veterans of any era who served in any capacity are invited to stand before their community and speak for up to ten minutes about what it was like to serve their country. Non-veterans are encouraged to attend and listen. This event is non-political\, and all perspectives are valued. There will be no question-and-answer period or debate on American foreign policy. Attendees will simply listen and learn about what it was like to serve in the wars that this nation has chosen to fight. \nThe Vets Town Hall is free to attend\, and snacks will be provided. To RSVP as an audience member\, click here. \nIf you are a veteran who would like to speak at the event\, click here to fill out a brief web form. You can learn more about the guidelines for speakers here\, at the Vets Town Hall website. Time permitting\, veterans are also welcome to sign up to speak during the event itself. \nQuestions may be directed to Natalie Belanger\, Public Programs Manager\, at nbelanger@connecticutmuseum.org\, or call 860-236-5621 ext. 289. \nVets Town Halls were originated by author Sebastian Junger (War\, Tribe) with the aim of increasing communication and understanding between veterans and civilians in their communities. The first event of this kind took place in Marblehead\, Massachusetts\, in 2015\, and was led by U.S. Representative Seth Moulton\, a Marine combat veteran.

SUMMARY:Samson Occom: Indigenous Sovereignty in Revolutionary Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:In an age of political upheaval\, Samson Occom (1723-1792) helped chart a new course for the Native communities of the Northeast. Occom grew up a Mohegan immersed in his people’s traditional lifeways\, and worked to reinvent those lifeways in a world transformed by colonialism. Occom rose to international fame advocating for Mohegan interests\, and eventually helped found a new Indigenous nation called Brothertown\, which (like Mohegan) continues to thrive today. Occom was inspired by the American religion but believed Native peoples had to forge their own paths toward freedom: “Indians\,” he said\, “are neither Whigs nor Tories.” Discover his compelling story and social impact with author Ryan Carr. \nAbout Our Speaker: Ryan Carr is a lecturer in English\, American Studies\, and the Core Curriculum at Columbia University. He has published widely in the fields of American literature and religious studies.
