DESCRIPTION:Where do we find common ground? Cultural heritage art forms create and reflect meaning\, identity\, and community\, but we can become overly focused on cultural differences\, or else assume that there is a universal artistic language. But what if we can dig into—and challenge—both perspectives? In Common Ground\, we bring together traditional artists and cultural practitioners who are rooted in different cultural traditions to demonstrate their work\, share with one another\, and discuss their similarities and differences. \nIn this conversation\, we will hold a discussion with the featured artists from the Growers of Color video series! Growers of Color addresses the experiences of people at the intersections of agriculture\, culture\, and community. Through the lens of folklife\, we can see how growing food is rooted in local history and contemporary contexts\, and how these growers evolve and adapt to meet their communities’ needs and build community with one another. \nThis conversation will feature: \n\n Azeem Kareem and Sarah Rose Kareem of Samad Gardens Initiative\nKhmer farmer Vicheth Im\nRobert Peck of Hemp Milk and Honey\nTravis Stewart of Farm with Me LLC\n\nThe panel will be moderated by Mike Keo\, a Senior Communication Officer at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. SUMMARY:Teaching the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:How did Connecticut contribute to the American Revolution? As the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches\, this teacher workshop will provide teachers with content and tools to use their classrooms as we explore Connecticut’s role in the American Revolution. This workshop will share teaching activities that highlight Connecticut’s role as the provisions state\, the experiences of Connecticut officers and regular soldiers who fought in the Continental Army\, the battles against Connecticut shore towns and conflict between Connecticans who remained loyal to Britain and those seeking independence. Workshop participants will receive ‘ready-to-use’ inquiry-based teaching activities; from close reading to student research and local primary sources\, on Connecticut’s role during the American Revolution. Participants will also have the opportunity to see documents and artifacts from the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s vast collection. \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Curious about the art of stained-glass? Join us for an introductory level workshop with local stained glass and restoration artist Francis Barkyoumb of Glass Dance Studio. Francis will guide you through the step-by-step process of stained-glass. The workshop will provide you with a pre-cut glass pattern that you will learn to foil and solder. By the end of the class\, you will have completed your own colorful summer-themed stained-glass suncatcher for window or garden to take home! \nFrancis Barkyoumb has been a stained-glass artist since 2009 and began teaching the art form in 2012. Bomba de Aquí is a dance and music company that performs and teaches Afro-Puerto Rican traditions in throughout western Massachusetts and central Connecticut area. In this interactive workshop\, they will educate participants about the history of Afro-Puerto Rican music\, foster understanding of the richness of Puerto Rican arts\, and most importantly encourage attendees to join in with dancing and drumming. That means free admission for all ages\, all day long\, to our Museum galleries and the Inspire Center. \nExplore our newest exhibition\, Then\, Now Next\, 200 Years and Counting\, or Coffee: A Connecticut Story\, plus permanent galleries throughout the Museum. \nFamilies\, don’t forget to join us at Saturday’s free family program\, “Summer Fun” at 11 am\, and Sunday’s “Family Story Time” at 3 pm. \nFree First Weekend falls on the first full weekend (Saturday to Sunday) of each month. No pre-registration required!

Our new “Ground Rules” series will pair a guided tour of the exhibition with a chance to meet a local coffee professional\, learn about their craft\, and taste their products. \nJoin us for a guided tour through our exhibition “Coffee: A Connecticut Story\,” then get to meet the folks from Sound Coffee in Bridgeport. They’ll walk you through how to do a coffee tasting\, and you’ll get to sample three single origin brews.
