SUMMARY:Stained Glass Suncatcher Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Curious about the art of stained-glass? Join us for an introductory level workshop with local stained glass and restoration artist Francis Barkyoumb of Glass Dance Studio. Francis will guide you through the step-by-step process of stained-glass. The workshop will provide you with a pre-cut glass pattern that you will learn to foil and solder. By the end of the class\, you will have completed your own colorful summer-themed stained-glass suncatcher for window or garden to take home! \nFrancis Barkyoumb has been a stained-glass artist since 2009 and began teaching the art form in 2012. In 2022\, Francis opened Glass Dance Studio in Branford\, Connecticut\, where he creates custom pieces of art\, restores panels and heirlooms\, and offers classes. \nThis workshop will be structured for the beginner\, but all levels of expertise are encouraged to register! You’ll learn about how they source and prepare their beans\, and how they brew using the Vietnamese phin drip method. Dive into the wonderful world of bookmaking with this introductory level class where you will learn the vocabulary\, history\, and know-how of binding books\, and create a beautiful hand-bound journal\, perfect for recording your summer adventures. \nIn this project\, you will create cover and interiors for an accordion style book journal\, complete with a ribbon\, leather\, or buttoned closure. By the end of the class\, you will have completed your own handmade journal to take home! \nMaterials will be provided; however\, patrons are encouraged to bring any scrapbooking paper\, drawings\, or paintings they wish to use for their book’s cover. Stay tuned for more creative workshops and cultural events at the Museum! \nBomba de Aquí\, led by Brendaliz Cepeda (Granddaughter of the “Father of Bomba” NEA Heritage fellow Rafael Cepeda) and current SNEAP Mentor Saul Peñaloza\, will be teaching a free\, family friendly workshop on Bomba Drumming and Dance. Bomba de Aquí is a dance and music company that performs and teaches Afro-Puerto Rican traditions in throughout western Massachusetts and central Connecticut area. In this interactive workshop\, they will educate participants about the history of Afro-Puerto Rican music\, foster understanding of the richness of Puerto Rican arts\, and most importantly encourage attendees to join in with dancing and drumming. All are welcome! DESCRIPTION:Current SNEAP Mentor and Master Calligrapher\, Dr. Jun Lin\, will guide participants in the art of Chinese Calligraphy. Dr. Lin will present an overview of Chinese calligraphy\, give a demonstration\, and show examples of his work. As a class\, he will instruct students in creating their own pieces. No experience needed; all skill levels welcome. All materials will be provided. \nDr. Lin is a tenured professor at SUNY-New Paltz. He has studied Chinese Calligraphy since age five and has practiced the art under the guidance of renowned calligraphers in China. Her background in oil painting and ceramics has given her a unique frame of reference to approach glass mosaicking. \nIrina Hizhytsa makes Ukrainian-American dolls. She studied with Slavic doll master artist Natalia Ledomskaya\, whose work attracted her heart and soul. Made with care from knitted fiber and macrame\, she has also studied with Alla Popova and is expanding her doll-making adventure to include plastic. For Irina\, dolls brim with energy and positivity\, and all of them are assistants in everyday life. \nCandlelight Jewelry’s selection of imported folk art and fine art from the Ukrainian School of Art for Children and other Ukrainian artists\, including: \nNicolas Zalevsky\, based in Farmington CT\, a painter whose works evoke surrealism\, magic realism\, and photorealism. Educated at the Ukrainian Academy of Printing and the Shevchenko State Art School\, his work has been recognized and exhibited locally and internationally. \nLuba Kuper\, a candlemaker specializing in natural beeswax candles. SUMMARY:Common Ground: Sacred Art Traditions in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Where do we find common ground? Cultural heritage art forms create and reflect meaning\, identity\, and community\, but we can become overly focused on cultural differences\, or else assume that there is a universal artistic language. But what if we can dig into—and challenge—both perspectives? In this new series\, we bring together traditional artists who practice art forms rooted in different cultural traditions to demonstrate their work\, share with one another\, and discuss their similarities and differences. Our first conversation will feature Tibetan thangka painter Yeshi Dorjee and Byzantine iconographer Marek Czarnecki\, as they discuss their sacred art traditions with one another and with audience members. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Encounters: Political Activism in 1860 -- and 2025
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be politically involved? What do political action and freedom of speech look like? In 1860\, during a time of deep political division and fears of a civil war\, five young men from Hartford\, Connecticut formed a campaign organization that became a nationwide movement and helped elect Abraham Lincoln. The attention-grabbing pageantry of the “Wide Awakes”—many of whom were too young to vote—provoked questions that remain relevant today. \nA new exhibit at the Connecticut Museum tells the story of the Wide Awakes\, featuring rare artifacts and documents from the Connecticut Museum collection. We invite you to join us on February 27 for a facilitated\, small-group dialogue followed by a question-and-answer style conversation with University of Connecticut faculty and community partners. The aim is to develop a forum for respectful and challenging dialogue. Groups will examine artifacts from the exhibition in detail\, using them as a window to contemplate the way Americans in the past thought about free speech\, democracy\, and political conflict. The program will spark conversation about how we can promote civic engagement in our own communities today. \nThe Encounters Series\, part of the Democracy and Dialogues Initiative (DDI) at UConn\, is working to increase democratic and civic capacity by supporting community dialogues on critical issues. DDI organizes audience-participation dialogues by which community members can dig deeply into complex topics through means of facilitated\, small-group conversations and engagement with content-area experts. \nThe program will begin at 6:00 pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm\, so please come early to browse the Museum galleries and share a light meal before the program begins! \nThis program is free and open to all members of the public.
