SUMMARY:Dolls of Our Lives: Book Talk and Author Signing
DESCRIPTION:Are you a Molly (a patriotic overachiever with a flair for drama)? Felicity (the original horse girl)? Kirsten (a cottagecore fan who seems immune to cholera)\, Samantha (a savior complex in a sailor suit)\, or Josefina (who dealt with grief by befriending a baby goat)? Have you ever wondered how Britney Spears or Michelle Kwan would answer that question? And why do we care so much which girl we are? \nCombining history\, travelogue\, and memoir\, Dolls of Our Lives follows Allison Horrocks and Mary Mahoney on an unforgettable journey to the past as they delve into the origins of this iconic brand. Continuing the conversations that began on their podcast\, they set out to answer the lingering questions that keep them up at night. What did American Girl inventor Pleasant Rowland hope to say to children with these dolls? Was girl power something that could be ordered from a catalogue\, described by a magazine\, or modeled in the plot lines of books? And how – and why – did this brand shape an entire generation? \nThrough interviews with a legion of devoted doll lovers\, a field trip to Colonial Williamsburg\, a place that inspired Pleasant to create American Girl\, and an exploration of their own (complicated) fandom\, this is a deep dive into one of the 90s most coveted products – the American Girl doll. \nThe book can be purchased at the event\, courtesy of River Bend Bookshop. And check out Mary and Allison’s podcast\, Dolls of Our Lives! \n$10 Adults\, $8 Seniors. Half price for Connecticut Museum general members\, free for NARM-level members. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. \nQuestions? Contact Natalie Belanger\, Adult Programs Manager\, at nbelanger@connecticutmuseum.org. \n

SUMMARY:Guided Tour of Connecticut's Bookshelf
DESCRIPTION:Drop in for a guided tour of our latest special exhibition\, Connecticut’s Bookshelf. Connecticut is the birthplace of comic books\, copyright law\, Noah Webster\, and the recipe for pumpkin pie. It printed the first fugitive slave narrative\, sold millions of dollars of books by subscription\, and inspired children’s sections in libraries nationwide. From the 1700s to today\, Connecticut has been compiling its bookshelf\, one sermon\, ledger\, map\, schoolbook\, law\, psalm\, newspaper\, and book at a time. Connecticut’s Bookshelf explores how these documents were made\, shared\, and received\, and asks you to consider: What belongs on the shelf? And who gets to decide? \nTours are included with museum admission. No pre-registration required! \nIf you’re interested in arranging a private tour of the exhibition for your book club\, community center\, or other group\, contact Adult Programs Manager Natalie Belanger\, nbelanger@connnecticutmuseum.org. \n

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Debra Cowan & Cate Clifford\, Songs That Touch the Past
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from Debra Cowan and Cate Clifford as they present Songs that Touch the Past! \nAs always\, we are open at 5pm to enjoy the museum and vendors. Music will run from 6pm-7:30pm. \nAbout the Artists \n“Stunning” is the word often used to describe Debra Cowan’s vocals. She performs unaccompanied or with guitar\, interpreting a wide range of traditional and contemporary songs. She is a full-time performer who bridges the old and new with a refreshing stage presence and has released six recordings\, all having earned praise on both sides of the Atlantic. She tours in the United Kingdom and in North America and can often be seen on stage with her good friend\, singer and musician John Roberts. Debra is a proud member of American Federation of Musicians Local 1000 and endorses Harvey Leach guitars. \nCate Clifford is a typically unaccompanied singer based in Rhode Island whose voice has raised rafters and cracked hearts in homes\, venues\, recording studios\, and festivals throughout the country. With powerful vocals\, sensitive harmonies\, and engaging context gleaned from intensive apprenticeship in the singing traditions that move her most\, Cate creates a vivid and accessible pathway to the songs she offers\, the people and stories behind them\, and the profound\, timeless delight of sharing both.  She maintains that no set is immune to a dash of Sondheim or a sprinkle of Shakespeare. \nWe are pleased to welcome Debra and Cate to the summer concert series as alumni of the 2020-2021 Southern New England Apprenticeship Program! In Songs that Touch the Past\, they’ll be sharing some great traditional story songs along with favorites from their repertoires. There will also be songs for audiences to join in\, so come ready to sing along! \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation\, the CT Cultural Fund\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD. \nLearn more about our summer concert series here.

On select Sundays at 2:00 pm\, drop in for a gallery talk about tavern life in early Connecticut. You’ll learn how to decode the symbolism on some of our most inscrutable signs\, and about why so few of these once-ubiquitous items have survived until today. \nThis gallery talk is included in regular museum admission. SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Sandeep Das presents Taal Mudra
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Sandeep Das presents Taal Mudra: A Confluence of Indian Music and Rhythm. \nBecause this performance is rooted in cultural and religious practices\, we will be marking off an area of our lawn for attendees to observe customs of respect to our performers. \nPicnic activities\, vendors\, and lawn games will continue as usual outside of this marked area. \nAs always\, we are open at 5pm to enjoy the museum and vendors! Music will begin at 6pm. \nAbout the Artist \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening of spontaneous improvisations\, dazzling rhythm\, and mesmerizing dance! \nCurated by Grammy-winning Tabla maestro Sandeep Das\, this special program will take the audience on an exciting journey through the world of North Indian Classical Music and Kathak dance. From ancient compositions to enchanting displays of virtuosic drumming and footwork\, it’s sure to be a night to remember! \nAbout Sandeep Das (Curator): \nA Grammy winning-musician\, Guggenheim Fellow\, and groundbreaking composer of new works\, Sandeep Das carries forward a 4\,000 year-old legacy of traditional Indian music that has been passed down from Guru (teacher) to Shishya (student) for generations. Das has been described as a “creator of myths with Houdini-like skills” (The Sydney Morning Herald\, Australia) and has collaborated with top musicians and ensembles from across the globe such as Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble\, with whom he has performed for the past 21 years\, as well as Paquito D’Rivera\, Bobby McFarin\, and iconic orchestras like the New York Philharmonic\, Boston Symphony\, and Chicago Symphony\, among others. \nPassionate about sharing his knowledge with the next generation\, he founded Das Music School in 2015\, which provides Indian Classical Music instruction to students worldwide. This concert showcases a few of Das’ local student apprentices\, offering a unique glimpse into the “Guru-Shishya Parampara\,” where some of the most impactful learning for up-and-coming artists happens live on stage during a performance. \nAbout the Performers: \n \nBailey O’Donnell is an apprentice of maestro Sandeep Dance and a Tabla player\, percussionist\, and composer. A classically-trained musician\, her experiences at the intersection of two diverse rhythmic traditions give her a unique perspective and ability to facilitate exchanges between Western Classical and Indian Classical Music. Bailey has had the honor of performing with her Guru at the Chan Centre in Vancouver\, Canada and the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, and has also performed with various ensembles at venues like the Chicago Symphony Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, and TivoliVredenburg in the Netherlands. We are pleased to have supported Bailey’s apprenticeship with Mr. Das during the 25th year of our Southern New England Apprenticeship Program. \nShonool Malik is a North Indian Kathak dancer. She is a student of maestro Sandeep Das and Sangita Chatterjee\, and her initial dance training was under Gretchen Hayden. Shonool has presented many dance masterclasses for children through various organizations\, and also has over a decade of experience in higher education administration. \nSriram Akella is a promising young Tabla player who has been learning from maestro Sandeep Das since he was just 6 years old. He currently attends Stoughton High School and recently performed with his Guru at the Newton Cultural Council’s annual Linda Platt Newton Festival of the Arts. \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund\, Bank of America N.A.\, Trustee\, the Cornelia T. SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: The Undaunted Professor Harp
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor concert featuring music from The Undaunted Professor Harp! \nAbout the Artist \nHugh Holmes\, Jr.\, is a New England-born specialist in Texas-style blues\, alternating between harmonica and fervent vocals. He developed his playing style alongside many great blues artists. R&B icon Solomon Burke called him “Professor Harmonica Holmes” and blues legend Muddy Waters dubbed him “The Professional of the Harp.” Accepting both names\, he became Professor Harp. \nProfessor Harp exemplifies dynamism within the blues tradition. He can be found performing throughout New England with his backup of guitar\, bass\, and drums. His music and life reflect his dedication to his craft and his heritage\, and he defines “roots music” as not just limited to the past\, but fully engaged in the present\, and the songs are a vehicle for calling attention to injustice. \nTo learn more about Professor Harp\, visit: https://www.professorharp.com/ \nThe concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. \nImage courtesy Jimdad Kenney.

SUMMARY:The Power of Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion with distinguished Black leaders and artists as they share their experiences with the community as a source of power and joy\, and how culture can be shared to create a more just world as experienced in Connecticut. \nOur panelists have carved out space in Hartford and beyond for members of their communities to see themselves reflected beyond a single narrative. Through the creation of public venues and conversations\, our guests enable residents and artists to define themselves and their individual Black experiences. This joy is reflected in wedding photos\, renaming green space\, organizing Juneteenth celebrations\, hosting town halls\, and art galleries. It becomes a love letter to Black residents and allows neighbors to listen and learn. \nOur panelists are: \n \n\nKeith Claytor\, award-winning photographer and the owner of TimeFrozen Photography.\nAdrienne Billings-Smith\, Equity Coordinator for the town of West Hartford. She is also the founder and president of Concerned Parents of Color of West Hartford\, an organization focused on building equity and accessibility for communities of color through collaboration and partnership.\nKamora Herrington\, founder of Kamora’s Cultural Corner in Hartford. She provides youth mentorship\, intergenerational programming\, training in cultural humility\, and space for creating and nurturing community connections.\nAndre Rochester\, Fine Artist\, Curator\, and Arts Advocate from Greater Hartford. In addition to creating his own art\, Andre manages a collection of over 2500 works of art at UConn Health Center\, serves as Program Manager at The 224 EcoSpace.\nSamariya Smith\, Community History Project Manager at CMCH. She will moderate this conversation.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, and light refreshments will be provided. \n Click here to register. Registration is encouraged\, but not required. We look forward to seeing you there! \nThanks to our sponsors

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: The Jedda La Rue Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Due to the local air quality alert\, this event will be held indoors at the museum!\nJoin us for a concert featuring music from The Jedda La Rue Quartet! Our vendors will be onsite from 5:00PM. Music will begin at 6:00PM! \nAbout the Band \nThe Jedda La Rue Quartet is presented by Anne Marie Williams\, better known as “Jedda\,” who crafts a masterful collaboration through intergenerational connections and multi-talented performing artists. \nOne of Jedda’s local mentors is living legend Emery Austin Smith—jazz pianist\, arranger\, and composer—who first encouraged her to vocally venture into those known and loved\, “classic standards.” Jedda magically connects across generations\, interweaving her mastery of early childhood education and educational program design with the arts\, and delights in sharing her own “pearls of wisdom through songs\, stories\, fitness\, theater\, music\, and movement” with young children and adults. \nAs K La Rue Educational Arts in Motion\, she has provided educational resources for schools\, teachers\, and parents in the Greater Hartford area for over 35 years. In the tradition of Hartford jazz excellence\, Jedda will share familiar songs with local flavor\, stories that connect us to the histories of the music and the community\, plus a little something special of her own. She will be joined by Hartford musical luminaries Alvin Carter\, Jr. on percussion\, Christopher Casey on piano\, and Stephen Porter on bass. \nPhoto courtesy Ray Shaw.

SUMMARY:Facets of Indian Culture
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Layavinyasa back to the CMCH to share Facets of Indian Culture\, an exciting opportunity for all ages to experience Kuchipudi dance\, and learn more about the cultural values and beliefs that permeate this art form. \nKuchipudi is a south Indian classical dance form accompanied by Carnatic music. Dancers dramatically interpret songs with spiritual themes\, utilizing many symbolic gestures and rhythmic movements to embody the mythic figures of the songs. To further illustrate and explain the meanings that are part of the performances\, Layavinyasa will also showcase Indian material culture including figures and paintings that contain the same symbolic elements\, and which will help show the spiritual themes of the lyrics\, as well as illustrate community festivities. \nThe program will showcase figures such as Nataraja\, which is the Hindu god Shiva in his form as the cosmic dancer. He holds an hourglass-shaped drum in his upper right hand\, which in dance is depicted with a “damaru” hand gesture\, both symbolic of rhythm and time. A cobra uncoils from his right forearm\, while his palm shows the “abhaya” gesture\, which means to not fear evil. \nThe program will also feature the Dandiya Raas\, a popular communal dance performed during Navrathri Festival\, another type of portrayal of cosmic dance\, this time depicting Lord Krishna and friends\, and the cycle of time\, birth\, life\, death\, and rebirth. \nThe program is partly funded by CT Humanities\, and will be offered free to the public. There will be a Question and Answer session after the program. We hope to see you there!
